No one enjoys making mistakes. Here are ways you can avoid making the same major mistakes I made when I started out cutting gems one year ago.

nice nice thanks Peter,,,,so far I have been studying on bad material and that forced me to study a lot with a lot of difficulties. Soon I just want good material to work with

Absolutely - bad material can drive us insane. There are some great inexpensive materials to practice on, like goshenite, garnets and topaz. They cut some attractive gems too~!

This rabbit hole goes deep. What's the most difficult part of learning to cut gems?
@GemologyforSchmucks
@GemologyforSchmucks 9 ай бұрын
Ooof! ~ perhaps a wiser individual than I should answer this, but from my experience, the most difficult part is spending enough time doing the *same* thing that you can recognize variances in your process. This is also why I think being able to sit down with an experienced cutter is invaluable, because they can tell you about what is going wrong and what is just difficult. You have to chase SOOOO many gremlins if you are learning to facet AND learning how your machine and equipment work(s).

Was nice to watch the full video.that you are demistifaying this gem cutting world. I am just learning to cut gems with stuff made at home . If I am cutting. A gem (trillion shape) the pavilion has 4 stepks how wide must be each step(%) from the gem so that I can't get a window at the final cutting? Thanks. for your answer.
@GemologyforSchmucks
@GemologyforSchmucks Жыл бұрын
Hi Jose~ great question. The fact is, that the number of steps does not control whether or not a stone has window. The angle of the steps is what controls the window. Each stone material has a critical angle, and the facets must be steeper than that angle to avoid having window.

Mistakes are fine, as long as you learn from them. That's not just in gem cutting, that's in life too. Another thing I tell new cutters is get Gem Cut Studio, there a 30 day free trial. The cutting assistant is worth it alone, just to see how each facet is suppose to come in on a design.

Mistakes are fine and even good, yes. Being able to avoid mistakes that others have made because they tell you about them... now that may be the definition of friendship.

It's the same for guitarists starting out. Except, I tend to have a very good memory of my frustrations, so I haven't forgotten the tips I intended to impart one day. (I love that you use guitar hangers for your handpiece and whatever else. I've seen photographers use them for their tripod storage, too. Useful doohickeys.)

I agree that our frustrations are a font of opportunity for others to learn from. I think the key is to not get too bitter and crotchety about it (like me XD ) so that we're willing to share when the opportunity presents itself.

2nd hand on faceting facebook groups would be a good place to look. Otherwise, the Sterling handpiece machine out of Sri Lanka (same one I use) is dependable and markedly cheaper than many of those produced in the western world.

I know it is a personal question but are you single I have a plutonic life partner that I have raised two Wonderful sons since they were age five and nine years old and the youngest is 32 now I have found the perfect life partner for me it isn't a typical relationship but works for our family every time I purchase a bunch of rough they each pick a piece to have me cut or leave in rough form for them and about one in five pieces I make are for my family the rest of my work is one hundred percent special orders with unique designs I was curious if you are single and around what percentage do you make for loved ones and yourself currently I am making a hyalite opal ring for myself and muzo emeralds for my partner and sons one thing I love is I have my youngest son who is a professional tailor specializes in eduardian and Elizabethan costumes and wedding dresses and men's wedding attire with tons of designs that have steampunk aspects and love when he ask me to make custom gemstone buttons for his creations it started when I was making coin rings and had the centers with beautiful designs and decided to make them into some buttons it is very common now that they have me design the engagement and wedding rings and he makes the wedding attire for entire wedding party it is a great way that we get to bond
