One thing I tell my students about overlapping passes is to look at the previous bead, you will notice a portion of the prior bead to be "lit up" by the arc and cover that area with the new bead by watching the toe on the new bead. Similar to what is done on the soapstone mark. Another great video!.

One thing I can tell everyone is that if you have to stop during your actual test you’re gonna send in, make sure it’s in the middle / close to it !!!!! They will cut and bend 1 inch in from the end and cut a 3/8 bend strip out, so to make sure you have the best chance to pass do that:)
@resirvoirdog94
@resirvoirdog94 Жыл бұрын
I remember asking some coworkers where the strips would be taken out, and they kind of laughed it off and said basically pretend like it's getting x rayed. Which is a take, but, to anyone stressing about taking a test, you can reassure yourself that you're absolutely giving yourself the best possible chance by avoiding restarts in those coupon zones.

a few things i like to have when ever im welding but for sure when testing. they ll really get you out of a bind if you get some slag stuck in a tight spot. first a pipe fitters flie. 2 a small chisel like 1/4 inch. 3 a full hack saw blade and last take a hack saw blade and cut it in half at about 60 degrees to give you 2 nice sharp picks. great video love em. keep up the great work.

Welders today are having high tech welding machines. Back in the early 90 we had simple 380V industrial welder machines with a remote adjusting knob. Went through all the tests for x-ray. Not a walk in the park but confident grew with practice. For the root gap we measured it to be the diameter of the weld stick core. No back plate. Nice to see your videos 👍🏻

Frank-T thank you sir, I also learned in the 90’s on an old transformer. Gap was the diameter of the uncoated rod. 6010 root 7018 fill and cap. Things have changed a lot since then.

My teachers name was Johnny Napier. He was in the navy and taught navy divers, and he welded for NASA. He had us do our test very similar to this in 2007. I was definitely lucky to have the honor of him teaching me how to weld. I never could make a good living from it, but I've helped more people than I can count and myself many times. I love welding. It's just something about it that makes me excited. When I smell that smell, it does something to me. I wish I could've found a job and made a career from it. I enjoy your videos, and I appreciate the reminders of when I went to welding school. Have a good one and great job.

Just took this test except it was on 1" plate and it's getting X rayed and ultrasounded. It was actually a lot easier than I thought, no starts and stops because it was only 5" long but I reused all my rods so hopefully that doesnt screw me lol I think it should be fine tho. The only real challenge was getting it to fill fully because we had no run off tabs but I just turned the test around after every pass so one side didnt fill more than the other

Shorten up your rod. Yes youll probably have more tie ins but the shorter your rod, the less affect shake will have at the tip. Most of the time youll have extra rod at the end of your pass anyway so calculate how much then attach your electrode a little farther away than amount of extra rod you would have left over.

I passed this but in the 4G position and 3G, both 1 inch plates. Now I’m taking my MIG PULSE cert in 3G with 1 inch bc I want the unlimited thickness 😜
