In Episode 2 of DX Engineering’s Amateur Radio Satellite series, Sean Kutzko, KX9X, covers the basics of getting on the FM satellites, including what gear you’ll need, the importance of “full duplex,” handling polarization fading, and adjusting for the Doppler effect.

Thanks for the fantastic video, Sean! I've picked up bits and pieces here and there and have slowly been figuring out SO-50. Your video tied everything together, corrected my misunderstanding of Doppler, and showed me how to hold and use my Arrow antenna. Best video on FM birds. Excited to try again!

Man, I don't know how you do it. I'm new to SWL, an aspiring ham, and an experienced military RTO, so I'm familiar with the phonetic alphabet, but you guys are hearing through the static and the letters just roll off your tongue. All the while you are making adjustments to the antenna. I'm quite impressed.

Informative video, a couple months ago I started chasing NOAA satellites and more recently the ISS. I now use a Baofeng UV5R with a small yagi antenna for listening though the UV5R works just about as well without the yagi. My next step is to get my technicians license maybe one day make contact with ISS.

GREAT VIDEO! This was very well organized and put together. I’d like to use a copy of this to help teach people about ham radio Satellites on my KZfaq channel that helps to encourage people to come into ham radio. This is a topic I haven’t covered yet. I’ll be sure to put a link to this channel in the description and credit you before the video. I wanted to also say thank you for doing this. There was a lot of time and effort put in. This is the kind of thing that really helps to advance knowledge in ham radio. Thank you sincerely for all you did here. Larry de K7HN

Finding a Full Duplex Handi is not easy, so I have been using a Yaesu FT2D Dual Band (2M/70cm) Handheld. I have it set up with Split Frequency, so I can listen for folks to start talking and avoid tramping on them as the Transceiver switches Bands to transmit. I hope to try my Dual Band Yaesu FTM400DXR sometime soon, to see if hearing, as I send, actually improves the experience; since unlike the FT2D, the second Band does not mute when the Transmit band is activated..

Hi Sean, I enjoy your videos. I have tried satellite work and I also use a digital recorder. Might I suggest trying to see if your digital recorder has pass through so you don't have to use a splitter. I have an Olympus and a Sony recorder and I found both do have this pass through capability. Saves the extra wire. I haven't gotten on the birds for a while but I want to get back at it again. I love my Kenwood TH-D72 also.

My only question is that you mentioned that the pass was going to be about 70degrees overhead and your antenna seemed to be pointing a lot lower towards the horizon. I would have thought that you would be pointing almost straight up but I really enjoyed the video and learned a lot. Looking forward to the next one

Hi James! I didn’t include the video of the entire pass; the segment you’re seeing was later in the pass, when the satellite was closer to the horizon. Hope this helps! -Sean KX9X

Hi Sean, I learned a lot from your FM satellite video presentation tips. I would like to try out satellites this summer. I do not have a full-duplex radio but I do have 2 HTs. How would I cable the 2 HTs to an arrow antenna that has both 2M and 70CM elements? Do I need some type of low pass filter for U/V or a high pass for V/U to protect the receiving HT from possible damage and de-sense caused by transmitting on the other HT? Or it doesn't need one due to the TX/RX frequencies being far apart? Looking forward to your comments on this issue. Thank you and 73 - KK6RSL

Greetings Sean, thanks for the great videos on working the satellites. I have a ft991 that would be a perfect receive rig and also have a pretty good mobile rig that could work as the uplink on 70 cm. I bought an Arrow with the duplex unit but don’t really want to add an HT to get the full duplex. Not sure how to set up the antenna connection, probably bypass the duplexer on the Arrow and just connect the appropriate antenna elements to my u/d rigs but I’m concerned about overloading the front end of my 991 when transmitting on the mobile. You didn’t show this on the 5th video because you used fixed antennas that are probably located separately. Any ideas?

I hear you are in Central Illinois somewhere. I'm in the White Heath , Monticello, Champaign area. I bought a house with a big ham radio antenna tower. It was built in 1962 during the height of the cold war. The wires and antenna are still up there but there's no radio. It might be for TV, too. I've lived here for 8 years and would like to set up a ham radio at some point. I just don't want to hassle with the time and money right now. I'd like to listen more than talk. I would love to make friends with operators in my area to help me get started.

I understand the SO-50 satellite has a 2 meter up frequency, how does the Kenwood TH D72 HT. Work , any problems, need to adjust radio volume? My Wouxon HT does not work As full duplex on the SO 50 satellite. But works well on the other satellites, Comments?

Based on what I've heard in your Satellite Series, I take that there are no "Geosynchronous -Satellites" in orbit, just Non-Geosynchronous? Is that correct?

Great video series !! I have a question , i dont think you explained antenna cable, one radio, 2 antenna ? some sort of spltter cable ? when you transmit on 2 meter it doesnt interfere with incoming on 70 cm ?
