The Titan Thickness Planer is the cheapest on the market in the UK as far as I can tell. It does seem very similar to others on the market as well. The cost is a huge factor, and there are issues with it as standard.
I'm hoping to fix those issues by doing things I have no business doing!

Hey Dean. I'm a new subber to your channle and i want to start by saying. ITS BLOODY MORE AWKWARD TO PUT BACK TOGETHER THAN IT IS TO TAKE APART. I did mine a few months ago and it hurt my brain. YOU HAVE TO UNDO THE FRONT AND BACK SCREWS AS THATS HOW ITS ALL HELD TOGETHER.
@WoodworkJourney
@WoodworkJourney 2 жыл бұрын
Hiya, thanks for that! Because there are tabs sticking out the sides of the table I figured the front and or back would have to come off. Not sure I’m brave enough 😂😂 Did you have the foam around the outfeed roller casing blockages as well?

Nice one, and well done for getting that far... My Clarke version of this machine is at the top of the garden I a big plastic bag after I got fed up with mine. The thickness bed went out of co-planer and the fence.. well the fence was utter shite. I purchased a Dewalt DW733 Thicknesser and eventually a small Triton Planer... Looking forward to the next video and good luck,

It should go without saying but THIS WILL VOID YOUR WARRANTY!!! I’m being this dumb so you don’t have to be. Also, sorry for over using and incorrectly using the word ‘flywheel’, brain fog crept in 😂 Also no idea why it looks like I’ve done zero colour correction

Actually look up what is the state of rights to repair in your country. In many places, taking apart you machine will not void your warranty. Even the warranty void if opened stickers are actually not valid.

Infeed rollers - I don't think the chips matter. My drive gear had come off the square tenon of the plastic flywheel. Just put the washer and slip ring back on, working again! Think it got knocked off when a rogue piece of thicker board went through. ...haven't checked the rest of the series yet, but I thought this might help someone else. ...my chains, belt, gears, and wheels are all in alignment and not touching btw!
@Umski
@Umski 2 жыл бұрын
I have the same Titan machine, bought around 2014/15 so its design is slightly different (no handle to lock the in-feed table) - the rest of it is the same with the ropey fence etc - been meaning to make something straight with the fence but I rarely use it for planing - the thicknessing function is more often used but I find that I need to cut my lengths longer and then trim as the short in and out supports can cause the blade to dig in a bit at either end. It started to get quite noisy a short while back so I took the front cover off and found the same as you (no touching chains or gears mind) - gave it a clean up and a tiny quirt of oil on the bearings and it seemed happy again. I'd probably use a dry lube next time as the dust gets everywhere. I've not yet changed the blades but self-sharpened them quite crudely on a diamond stone - not ideal but it did the trick!
@WoodworkJourney
@WoodworkJourney 2 жыл бұрын
Awesome! Yeah I’ve thought about self sharpening the blades but I’ve changed out the blades when I’ve really damaged them with nails etc so they were too stuffed. I definitely recommend the dry lube so far, we’ll have to see how it holds up 😊

Hey Dean mate. I bought one of these bad boys and I was afraid to open it up to see what the story was inside but ur giving me a wee bit of confidence now bro.. Ur a wee bit of a mad yoke all the same bcos anybody watching this from Titan or Screwfix will never give u any help once they've seen u went inside and tinkered but by the looks of it u have had this thing for a few years?? Plastic cogs are not a great llok tbf so whoever makes these should hang their heads in shame. I heard that they were supposed to have got rid of the plastic for aluminium cogs.. The large ones I means Dean mate.. Best of luck anyways..

@@WoodworkJourney Thankyou for taking the time to reply, really looking forward to watching part 3 which the co-planer is my biggest problem, the fence on these planer thicknessers are not that good but if you type upgrades for it in youtube there are some really good ideas and not to hard to make.

There should've been a washer with an indent in it that counter intuitively goes in what looks to be backwards. I found that reversing this washer on the in-feed table tightening handle meant that it actually tightens the in-feed table. I'm looking around trying to find out exactly what to lubricate though and can't find any advice. I'm on my second machine now as the last one I had spun the blade block out to the side ending it's life in lots of noise and smoke! Luckily it was less than a month old so I got a replacement with no hassle at all, but I suspect lack of lube was a cause. I don't want the same thing to happen to the new one!
@alexbond5805

Exactly the same thing happened to my first one... Hence why I'm looking for how & where to lubricate as the advice on screwfix forums is "KZfaq it" 🤦🏻‍♂️

Interesting to see how the Titan is engineered. I looked at one but opted to get a Kity combination machine and set up the thickness planer as a standalone unit. It worked well, but I since bought a makita thicknesser (saving for it was worth it imo) and use a planing jig for planing. I've rebuilt a couple of smaller vingtage planer thicknessers and offer a word of advice: don't take off the blades and the tables at the same time. The magnetic blade setting jigs need a minimum diameter spindle and I doubt you can use them on the Titan, so if you take the blades and the table off at the same time it is a nightmare getting everything realigned as you have no reference point. Looking forward to see the rest of this.

Oh, man! I started a similar expedition today on my Scheppach HMS860 - which I suspect is the exact same machine rebadged - because the thicknesser bed has gone out of level. I have the same co-planar issue that you have and the only way I've found to sort it is to permanently fix the in-feed table in place, I haven't done it myself (yet), but as I only take off 0.5mm or so each pass I might. I'll have to check on Monday now, but every time I switch between planer and thicknesser I've been undoing the allen bolts on the fence. If I can, too, remove the bar and pop the fence off I'm going to kick myself.
