Sources are in the description. For those curious as to why there are 2 versions of Joughin's story, its because most people don't want to recognize that he changed his story several times depending on who he was giving it to.

I met two brother and sister survivors back in 2000. They were young children at the time. The sister was about 8 or 9 she said. Her strongest memories were the flares going up and the horrible screams as the ship broke in two. Her brother was only 3 at the time and didnt remember much at all. She was adament the ship snapped in half and remembered her mother gasping and saying "Oh, dear God!" And clutching them both to her. Meeting those siblings, both in their 90's then but still very lucid although in wheelchairs, was a meeting and conversation ill never forget.

But at the same time there are a lot of similarities. Most agreed that she broke in half, that the stern settled as if if wouldn’t sink after all, that she went down almost vertically and very quietly, etc. One misconception is about the explosions that led to some conspiracy theories, when in fact they heard the implosions. Probably the most accurate testimony is the one that said it sounded like “distant thunder”.

This is what fascinates me the most, the actual fact that we will NEVER know (unless we invent a time machine) what exactly happened. There are no records, no photos, it was dark, the various accounts differ a lot one to another... for 73 years we didn't even know if she broke or not. I believe that recent theories can be reliable, we can say how it happened more or less, we can simulate the sinking how many times we want with all the models available, but we will never know for sure what happened that fateful night.

I live in Florida and I've been out in the ocean a couple miles from shore and when you turn out the lights on the boat and it is pitch black even if you can see the lights from land on the horizon. This one is so far my favorite, and has got to be the most powerful, with testimony of survivors like Charles Joughin and Thomas Dillon who were not in lifeboats but were on board the ship and in the water during Titanic's final moments. That was always a point of view of the ship's last moments I was wondering about, what it was like for those still trapped on board.

People should give more credit to the survivors account, a lot of them said the ship broke in two, but the experts back then didn't believe. Now the modern experts say it would be impossible for the ship to rise to such a high angle and don't show the stern going under almost vertical like the survivors said it did. Yeah, I'll stick to what the people who there said.
@th8257
@th8257 2 жыл бұрын
Well, firstly, eye witness accounts are notoriously unreliable. Secondly, quite a lot of them said very contradictory things. Not all of them said they saw the ship break in two. Thirdly, there's some evidence to indicate that White Star and Harland and Wolf believed that Titanic had actually broken up, but the official enquiry brushed over it to try and keep the reputation of the companies intact. Titanic's younger sister ship, Britannic, which was still being built when titanic sank, was given different expansion joints, implying they knew Titanic had broken in two, and they were trying to address that structural weakness with Britannic.

Survivor accounts would be similar if they were all watching a 24-foot sailboat sink. This was a ship a sixth of a mile long and the height of an 11 story building when intact. People were in lifeboats miles away on all sides. Of course accounts are going to be different, but it astonishes me how people on KZfaq don’t seem to grasp that. Run a sixth of a mile in a city, and no one in all the buildings will be doing the same thing.

People do 100 foot dives into the water pretty regularly for recreation, so it's not really that farfetched. The main danger for people jumping off the Titanic would be the amount of things they could hit on the way down, or the people they could land on beneath them. Plus the life vest which would have great potential for injury due to rapidly getting yanked the opposite direction, or even just getting hit in the face/neck. Of course when doing it recreationally you need to do it properly (definitely avoid landing flat on your back or belly here) and make sure there's nothing you can hit beneath the water or on the way down. For reference, the world record high dive is 192 feet.

There are also a few reports of three "booms" like the distant claps of thunder as the ship began the plunge. Actually I believe there’s too much light to spot the ship, there’s no reason to see it so clearly, seeing colors like the white parts could only be possible with moonlight. If you wanna make something really similar you should include the lights of the ship while they were on.

I think it comes down to several things. The passengers who were further away may not have seen the breakup as clearly. Add to that when the lights went out and the darkness overtook the clear vision of scared people (both in and out of the lifeboats.) I think that the best witnesses were those who had more composure (if you had any that night). Since based on all these stories, the ones that seem most accurate were the ones closest to the ship and were able to see it and the breakup clearly. I don’t know what Lightholler saw, but I think he just glanced over the breakup, or maybe hinted at it when he claimed that boilers and engine parts were falling loose within. Regardless this is great showing what they saw even if the style of sinking is a bit different.

Lightholler was probably under pressure to deny the break up by his bosses at White Star Line. He still was an employee of the company and anything that made their ships look "weak" in the press would hurt is career.

It sounds alot like as the bow went down and raised stern the ship pivoted some until the point it broke. Bobbing sort of like a half full object would in water until it sheared. I am willing to bet the direction in which it was rotating was also in relation to the side of the ship that was peeled back. As the bow went down it probably started to twist and the already weakened double bottom ripped at the bent seams much like the trick where you tear a telephone book im half. Beings it was dark they probablu could not see the fact that the whole side of the stern of the ship was literally deskinned along about a 160 foot section. If they go look at the stern they will probably see what amounts to rivets popping all along that seam. It is the only explanation as to why that large section was ripped from the side of the ship. The pure descent of the stern would not be enough to cause that kimd of damage let alone the force in which the stern slammed into the ocean bottom. It would also make sense as to why the stern rapidly sunk with almost no real sound or suction. By tearing off such a large skin section the stern would rapidly fill with water.

By the witness accounts I'm starting to modify my own theory and think Cameron was wrong to some degree. If some of the witnesses didnt miss the stern rising up the second time then more people say it pivoted and sank slowly with no suction. This would likely be due to the bow still roughly attached until the stern sank far enough under. Under the water the bow still has that angle so as it continues pulling down at an angle it twists the stern around. It had to still be pulling from below the surface until it finally gave way.
@MrChickennugget360
@MrChickennugget360 2 жыл бұрын
James Cameron's version in 1997 is known to be incorrect since discoveries in the early 00's showed that the ship was at a lower angle when the break up happened. It was not under water but since the lights mostly went out it was so dark only those who were very close could see clearly what was happening. as for people not reporting the break up White Star Line was a factor since they did not want crew reporting the break up since it would be used to claim their ships were not strong.

@@JeVoudrais12 That movie doesn't honour the laws of physics very much. It it were going to snap, it'd have done so much sooner before such a steep incline happened. Regarding physics, it would have happened when the list was even enough you could walk around easily as opposed to when everything and everyone not bolted down and clinging were sliding off the deck. Or she'd have gone down intact, save the funnels and boilers, similar to what *A Night to Remember* depicted. And going down totally vertical.

I have a copy of the book " The "Sinking of the Titanic and Great Sea Disasters " edited by Logan Marshall copy right 1912. On page 200 of this book , the following is stated by Mr. Jack Thayer ," I saw the ship in a sort of red glare , and it seemed to me that she broke in two just in front of the third funnel. " Mr Thayer's statement accurately describes the condition of the wreck when found by Dr. Robert Ballard. Mr Thayer also added pictures of what he saw that night on page 201 . There are six drawings of his views of what happened that night .

Meanwhile, no one even remembers the women survivors who said the same thing and were ridiculed for 70 years. It has to be that Jack Thayer said it, and Robert Ballard confirmed it. Eva Hart always swore it for years. She was 7 and Thayer was 17.

@HufflepuffDaddy 3 жыл бұрын
I believe Thayer's verbal testimony 100% but the 6 drawings you mentioned are from a passenger on the Carpathia (L.H. Skidmore) and his interpretation of what happened when talking to Thayer after his rescue. Thayer denied the drawings were accurate and then accepted it later on...and then committed suicide many years later, probably doubting his own sanity. RIP

The fact that there was no suction actually doesn't point to there being water inside the stern, it's because the stern was sealed enough to not be pulling in a massive quantity of water, which aligns with the fact that most of it imploded on the way down...
