High Voltage DIY Electric Bikes and Vehicles

Күн бұрын

This is Richards Lightning Rods powered titanium e bike. I have been watching this one get built over the last year and am really pleased that this can be the first High Voltage video of 2024. This is an amazing machine. Sleek and graceful but with plenty of power. The video has a bit of an overview of the bike and then a bit of a tour around the city of Odessa where Richard lives.
The bike uses a 120 volt battery which is 30s 6p of Molicell P42a. The ebike laws where Richard lives allow for 3000 watts.

If you want a unique ebike that stands out of the crowd then the lightning rods drives are a great option and are not that much more expensive than using a BBSHD or CYC. You can make contact with Lightning Rods via our discord community. highvoltagekits.com/discord

You can see why it gets a Unesco rating. Apparently there is a huge subterranean cave complex as well which sounds really interesting.

@HighVoltageKits

West Coast Electric bikes sell them. Also Golden motor. There are cheaper options if you get direct from somewhere like Ali Express. I used EM3EV which is another option. Some of those you might get some duty on them.

Nice bike. I can see the engineering skills and money it took to build. It looks like a simple e-bike, but it's not. I didn't mind the engine noise. Probably because I'm also partial to noisy cars as well. The chain slap at low rpm might irritate me Odessa looks like a beautiful city. I imagine more so in summer Well done
@HighVoltageKits

I think in person it's not going to as loud as some people think. But it's dual 219 as well. I suspect a bit of motor idle would help with chain slap. Riding on cobbles for large parts did not help either. It's beautiful to see it all though. Stunning architecture.

what would you recommend for mid drive, I'm looking for speed and torque and reliability BBSHD with your upgrade kit looks good The CYC photon again looks good I'm concerned about on going issues Or do look at the CYC mid drive motors
@HighVoltageKits
@HighVoltageKits 7 ай бұрын
For speed torque and reliability I would take a BBSHD with our kit over anything else I have as long as it will fit with the frame you want. Its untouchable for reliability in the 3-5kw power range if you build it correctly with the gearing etc. My Fatbike has thousands and thousands of trouble free miles on it. The CYC gets you a torque sensor and is more flexible in terms of mounting it. But they don't last as long and are harder to service and maintain and more expensive to service and maintain. The only motor that has real speed or power with CYC is the X1 motor. The Photon is a pedal assist 500 watt motor.

I'd like to get a feel of it as a bystander in terms of noise. If you notice alot of the riding where you here rattle is over cobblestone or pave as the French call it. Anything is loud on that. Cheers

I think in the future I'd like to do a lightning rods big block motor on an eeb clone frame, but with derailer instead of single speed. These motors just have a cadence sensor correct, no torque sensor?
@HighVoltageKits

Right now the LR stuff is cadence based. We are looking at a torque sensing version we just need to find the right one.

@@_Drae2210 you may want to think hard about using a bicycle chain. I had a cyc motor on it first. I was really disappointed in it. Shifting every 3 sec or so. The lighting rods power is a handful.

Cool bike but the dude doesn’t know anything about it lol. He said the battery is a “36p so it has quite a bit of voltage”. I’m guessing he meant it’s 72v 36ah.

It's his first video for this kind of viewing. He meant to say 30s 6p of molicell p42a. So 120 volt battery. I guess it kind of cones out as 36p. He knows his stuff and has built quite a few other bikes over years.

It wasn’t easy getting everything together here in Ukraine. Lighting Rods mid drive kit’s start out $695. The big block is 10,000 watt. 3 times the power. Michael hand build every motor to your specifications. CYC is over $1100 last I looked. By the way I have a cyc for sale. Only 20 miles on it. Comes with a asi 2000 controller, $700
@HighVoltageKits
@HighVoltageKits 7 ай бұрын
LOL. You can get the drive and a controller package for about 1200-1400 depending on options. Then you need a solid frame. Does not have to be Ti though. This one here can likely do 100mph with the right gearing but you don't need to go that crazy. You could have a nice bike with a Chromoly frame and a 72 volt battery that will ride really nicely for under 5k if you do most of it yourself. If you use second hand frame etc. The battery will likely cost the most. So it depends on how fast and far you want to go.

Dual 219 chain reduction. There is a belt drive version that is pretty much silent. Really though once the speed gets up you don't want to be silent.

don't think that rattle is motor specific as the rattle sound was amplified over bumps. Bumpy roads on a hardtail but I am pretty sure that rattle could be tuned out with suspension or chain tensioner mods.

This is the reason I went rear hub for my build, although one day I'd like to try riding a mid-drive, heck it may even convert me but my 1500w48v 52v20ah shunt modded build is a little lightweight flying machine that kills the steepest of hills at 20mph + so I can't complain But one day I may go for a mid-drive build, the price is a bit too much though, and geez that noise I think would just annoy me too much. Great build/vid.

titanium is so expensive as a raw material to begin with. then welding and repairs... expensive (double shielding needed). I think there are more cost effective means to reduce weight. but for cool factor and the feel of the stuff... yea i gotta give props but ouch in the wallet.
