This Title Match Network exclusive is from our George South Documentary, produced during Wrestlecade Weekend several years back.
Known as Ric Flair's favorite opponent for television, here is wrestling journeyman George South. Back in the 1980s, when working as an enhancement talent, South crossed paths the Original Sheik.
Sheik is still regarded as the one of the most feared and innovative villains in pro wrestling history. His signature move was using a pencil on his opponents while the referee was distracted.
George also talks about the role of the jobbers and why having good enhancement talent is a lost art in today's mainstream wrestling.
Enjoy all the best Wrestling Shoot Interviews here on Title Match Network.

I Still watch the WTBS Studio Matches on KZfaq. True In Ring Story Telling with Spot on to the Point Promos. Nothing ridiculously long, but totally to the point. Jim Cornette, Roddy Piper, JJ Dillon and the Horsemen. Instantaneous Heel or Face Turns with No buildup. Instant Shock! Each week, Crockett’s left You with a Cliffhanger setting up Next Week!

I agree that it's weird that the top guys are always fighting each other. A match stop's feeling special after you have watched the same people go back and forth for months. Also, my favorite jobber was the Brooklyn Brawler. I always looked forward to seeing the Brooklyn Brawler when I was a kid. He was a professional "underneath guy".

Growing up watching wrestling I actually liked the matches with Barry Horowitz, Lanny Poffo, George South, Iron Mike Sharpe. You pretty much knew they weren't going to get the win, but unless the office was building up a monster heel (or babyface in the case of Iron Mike and sometimes George), the match was going to be good, maybe not long, but it would be a solid entertaining match.

That’s part of the change to the business. It was once about using tv to drive the live shows. Guys were paid off the live show receipts. Today, it’s a tv show, the networks pony up all or part of the production costs and everyone on the card has a guaranteed deal. Even the guys in AEW that are hardly seen are making a very good income for nothing.

I love this story about the Sheik. I made my pro debut working with Abdullah the Butcher. I had a similar talk before the match. Abby couldn't have treated me any nicer before or after the match, and he protected me throughout the match itself. I was surprised at how agile he was for a guy his size.

As a kid, I would watch The Sheik and Bobo Brazil on Big Time Wrestling in my hometown of Lansing, Michigan. The Lansing Civic Center held so many matches that were the forefathers of wrestling today. They set the tone. The original Sheik may have been the greatest wrestler/showman of them all. Praying on his rug before the match. Carrying every concealed weapon he could get his hands on. What a great comment that in wrestling today, you don't know the good guys from the bad guys. THE SHEIK WAS THE ULTIMATE BAD GUY!! Every man who wrestled him wore the white hat. Figuratively speaking. It was fun. It was make-believe. And it was art on a grand scale. The Sheiks' real name was Ed Farhat. His extended family was a wealthy group of lawyers in the Lansing area. Without his kind of color and joyful fantasy, the wrestling of today would never have happened. The Sheik could give Hulk Hogan and Ric Flair lessons in showmanship. They owed this icon of the past a royalty check for the money they made from his trail blazing magic act.

I've been saying this for years. It gave you a chance to see your favorites beat people cleanly. Jake would come out an ddt a bunch of random guys then jake would have a run in with someone. It left more room to branch off an lead to other things an keep people guessing. Other thing I feel missing is stall holds. Like demolitions neck crack or neck pinches.

Nobody believes the magician actually sawed the girl in half, but they still went to see the show. People knew that things they saw in the wrestling ring weren’t real, but they came to the matches to see the show and just maybe figure out how the magic in the ring works.

He's so right. I hated Ultimate Warrior for that reason. And I enjoyed guys like Hogan, Austin, Rock, DX because the entrance was killer. They learned that from the old school guys. The fear that the crowd had when Abdullah would come out was crazy. People would run from their seats if he walked in their direction. There's a formula that is tried and tested over decades of pro wrestling that these new guys haven't learned. That's why it's unwatchable.

@@hdtripp6218 Me too! Even though I knew wrestling was fake, I thought him an Sheik were different. They would just start slicing people. It made no sense why wrestlers would want to get in a ring with those guys unless they were crazy (like the Funk Brothers) and wanted a real fight.

Great guy. But I will solve a mystery for him. And this is the reason Vince succeeded where others failed. Wrestling is a TV show, plain and simple. That is where the money is. The old model of booking jobber vs star isn't cut out for the modern era. It's all about weekly ratings, not building up a main event. And as he acknowledged, it really never hurt ticket sales. If people see a jobber facing off against a name, it's an immediate channel change for 9/10 viewers.

no offense intended, but I only vaguely remember George. please don't take that to mean you wearn't important or not appreciated. some people forget that when most guys and girls look smooth as butter in the ring its due to people like George. my first exposure to pro wrestling was the wwf in 1980 or so. my first wrestler I said was my favorite was Bob Backlund. now I know he was an outstanding ametuer wrestler, but you still can't look that good without a LOT of help from your opponent. (more like partner.) I apologize if the term "jobber" is demeaning. back then that was the term used and not one I created. anyway, those Saturday shows were almost always a squash match between a face and a heel jobber or a heel against a face jobber. we always knew how it was gonna go, but we got to see our favorite use their arsenal of defensive moves and their unique finisher. I think j even remember Bob Backlund using more than one finisher. I always wanted to to see the roll up bridge pin combo he used. the cross face chicken wing came after. I think he even used the "electric chair" (an atomic drop/the spine chiller supreme.) it was different back then and maybe even a bit more fun. thank you George South.

They built up to main events at arena shows when that was what made the money and the TV shows were just adverts. Now TV is where the money is, so the main event followed. Sorry George, you missing the way it was is a whisper, and money talks.
