This Title Match Network exclusive is from our George South Documentary, produced during Wrestlecade Weekend several years back.
Known as Ric Flair's favorite opponent for television, here is wrestling journeyman George South. Back in the 1980s, before GPS or cell phones, wrestlers were expected to find every town on time.
This is also before the days of paved interstates so most of these trips were in the backroads. Find out what a typical travel loop was like for the stars of the Mid-Atlantic in NWA Wrestling.
Also, hear what some of George's biggest regrets are in wrestling. We talk about spending so much time around Andre the Giant, Wahoo McDaniel and countless other legends while coming up in Jim Crockett Promotions.
Find out what Mr #1 says he wishes he could redo if given the opportunity.
Plus we'll hear what the average enhancement talent (aka jobbers) endured while working the wrestling territories.
Enjoy all the best Wrestling Shoot Interviews here on Title Match Network.

Forget the accolades, I watched wrestling as a kid, and never heard of this jobber. But, this is the best wrestling interview you're going to get! This guy has done everything and seen everything! If he had his own podcast, it would be the biggest wrestling podcast.

And he'll be happy to shake it. George is as nice a man as you'll ever meet ,wrestler or otherwise. If he an hell stop and take time to talk to you. Very fan friendly. Seemed to be friendly period. Just a genuinely nice human. In my opinion he's probably the most underrated wrestler ever. Ask any other wrestler they'll tell you George has forgotten more about the business then most ever learn. His love of wrestling seems

The old timers, especially the old Heels, seem to have the greatest wealth of stories about the business. I can honestly watch guys like George, Greg Valentine, Jake the Snake and so on recount their tales for hours.

I feel bad because as a kid i loved the traditional baby faces. 42 years old i realize the heels were probably the nicest people.

@@roblena7977 Same here. I grew up rooting for Hogan and company and booing Greg Valentine... then you get older and realize that the heels were not only just playing a part, they were the ones who made the Faces look good.

I feel same... But it just shows how well they understood and respected the business. I'm 46 an it was about 12yrs ago I found out how bad my idols were. I was HUGE Dynamite Kid / Jake Roberts / Gentleman Chris Adams fan. But not to long ago saw Greg Valentine shoot interview & he's 180 of how he was in ring. But I feel like George is good guy with huge amount of wrestling knowledge.

George South is a national treasure for a lot of us who enjoyed NWA and the territories in the late 70s to mid 80s. He definitely gets it. And not just about wrestling but about life. So many people with so much genuine knowledge and no one takes the time to have a regular conversation with someone. They’d rather look at a 15 second TikTok and still don’t get it right.

I would rather watch an A&E bio on George South then most of the ones they have made these 2 seasons! Had the pleasure to meet him on a show 5 or 6 years ago a true class act! And you can tell the character of the man because Ive yet to hear one person from the business say a bad word of South!

I can personally attest this man definitely works amazingly hard. We used to rent a ring from George south back in NC around 2005 to do shows as a local promotion. I remember we had booked him for a early show around 2pm and this man said as soon as we are done he has to drive to another state for another show same day!

"I learned more about the business in the back seat... And it's just listening, and you got all this knowledge." I never have and never will work in the wrestling business, but what South said seems to be an important life lesson that anyone can take and apply to their own line of work and always continue to excel.

I was born in 1988 and even I know the greatest baby face ever, Ricky Steamboat and I know George South from watching old nwa vhs tapes as a kid and his matches on KZfaq. It baffles me that people in the business wouldn't recognize or know Steamboats resume, especially wrestlemania 3. Hell, I even saw the mouth from the South Jimmy Hart just randomly standing across from me at the airport and immediately went up to him and we talked for almost an hour before we went to our flights and I consider him an ol'timer from George's era. My mom was like who's that guy w the mullet you were talking too lol.

George South trained me, and I worked for him and the Italian Stallion for three years. When I decided I wanted to go out and work everywhere I could. I got us booked at WWF through Jay Strongbow, George and Stallion came in the locker room, and they were still hot that I stopped working for them. They got in Strongbows ear and then we were no longer booked. George and Stallion stole my WWE moment, but It came back to bite them, when the Hardey boys(who they trained) got the enhancement talent mostly "laid off" because of the heat they had for George and Stallion.

I don't know why but this just makes me so so sad. He reminds me a lot of men I grew up around. Maybe I sound like an old fogey but they just don't make em like this anymore. In fact, it seem like they just don't make ANYTHING like this anymore. That certain spark and brave ruggedness....that American essence....it's just dying out. YOu can feel it every day more and more. I wish I could go back and slow it down too....to stretch out time and enjoy it. Hmmm. Good guy

George South was always my favorite jobber. I hated the politics of wrestling at the time, making me hopeful for guys like him, Ricky Santana, and Italian Stallion, always within reach of "getting over," but always being used as "talent enhancement" for the "pros."
@DrSourPurp

I feel like this happens nowadays in the UFC. Im only 27 but I grew up with wrestling and watched old matches and kept up with current wrestling and read biographies of wrestlers I was super into it.. it's what's going on with MMA anymore on a real fighting level. That's why professional wrestling will never be what it once was. It's sad man.
@williampartridge4595
@williampartridge4595 Жыл бұрын
@@DrSourPurp in the late 80s, you had your "pros," (consisting of champions, title holders, mid-carders, and journeymen). All were ALWAYS firmly above the rank of "jobbers." I would see the same "jobber regulars" in the NWA transition over to WWF, only to lose even more decisively in squash matches ove there. While mid-carders at least had the possibility of "getting over" to that of title-holder status, the "jobbers" were never slated to make it into the ranks of mid-card. Their only "job" was to "lose." No nickname, no fancy costume, always entered the ring first, and barely even got one wrestling move in during a 2-minute in-ring beating. They routinely lost to baby faces in as much contemptuous disdain as they did to heels, with no less mercy shown to them, by either. On rare occaisions, I would see an occasisional "jobber" vs "jobber" match via Jim Crocket (NWA), but the deciding winner hardly got so much as even a hint of a push into the ranks of the pros, as a result. (Example - Italian Stallion def Tommy Angel / Brad Armstrong def Larry Stevens, etc.). They were the cannon fodder of the business. Any time there was a pro vs pro match, it was considered a "main event." For all I knew, the dynamics of wrestling (at the time) would always be set up in such a cliched and run of the mill hierarchy, and, by the early 90s, I gradually lost interest.
