The man was so legitimately happy to be there at that Oyster bar. That's the reason we all loved him so much. Anyone can be a great writer and personality, but Tony lived it. He was authentic. I miss him.

@Lazar MMA alcohol is one of the most potent depression causing agents in the world, next to benzodiazepines, hence alcohol being able to induce suicide. We are just biological machines after all. I take your point though, yes there is a viscous cycle here.

I grew up one town over from his hometown, but found myself in San Francisco for my first job out of school. I went to Swan Oyster Depot my first and last day in that city. On my last day I thanked the guy behind the counter for the great food and mentioned I only discovered the place thanks to Tony Bourdain. The guy’s face immediately lit up to pure joy at the bare mention of his name and we just shot the shit for a few minutes before I headed on my way. It’s a sacred place if you ask me

Back then, a decade ago ... you could get a good meal, like this, with a beer for $15. Today, easily $40+. I remember the first time I saw a $20 cheeseburger on a menu in a restaurant. It was NYC circa 2016. Now in 2023 ... I honestly can't remember the last time I saw a cheeseburger for under $18 in the suburbs at a sit down restaurant. These were the days ...

It still breaks my heart every single day that that man is not with us anymore. He had such a love and zest for life that it was contagious. My love of food and travel. Became more apparent because of him. And yes living in San Francisco being a native San Franciscan. I can absolutely relay and he's right it has changed so much in the last 15-20 years that it's heartbreaking and I don't think that Anthony would recognize it. Now. But Swan Oyster Bar and Tonga room are definitely two of the places that are still intact still part of what I know as San Francisco and love about San Francisco. Could not agree more. I wanted my late father to pass away in a similar way i.e. after a large satisfying meal with good wine in his sleep. The reality was much, much worse.

@@FecalMatador Thank you for those understanding words. Regarding Anthony Bourdain, I had started watching Parts Unknown (so many series !) on Netflix just as I learned of the news of his death. I then couldn't watch it for about two years then, after accidentally catching another item about him being interviewed about another chef, I started watching him again. It contains some of his very best work and many superb - and even harrowing - locations. It's intensely vivid as everything is shot in HD and sound wise it is mixed to perfection. As the final series drew to a close, I watched with increasing trepidation but his passing was handled very sensitively and with no speculation. That doesn't make his loss easier to bear but I am at least grateful he left a legacy of outstanding work that will still look very current for the next five years or so. I'm still dipping in and out of my favourite episodes. I wish he could have stayed, though, he still had more to give.

My DC bred grandmother loves the yellow part (on blue crabs that is). She refers to it as "the Devil" and mixes it with her vinegar or butter when picking crabs.
