As a High Church Lutheran, or should I say Evangelical Catholic, this was a fascinating discussion. I agree with much of what was said in this video in terms of Authority and Church unity. Thank you for doing this video!

Fantastic discussion, gentlemen! It exemplifies what I find so beautiful and fulfilling in the classical Anglican expression of the historic Christian faith.

Summary: In this episode, Jonah Saller and Jeremiah Short discuss the Catholicity of the Reformation and the relationship between Reformed theology and Catholicism. They emphasize that Catholicity does not solely refer to Roman Catholicism but encompasses the universal faith of the early church. They explore the authority of the church and the importance of appealing to the teachings of the early church fathers. They also discuss the role of ecumenical councils and the need for unity within the church. The conversation highlights the Anglican tradition as a means of uniting the church and emphasizes the importance of the gospel and the comfort it brings. This conversation explores the Catholicity of Anglicanism and the Reformation. The speakers discuss the emphasis on the gospel in Anglican services and the sufficiency of Jesus Christ. They address the disunity within Protestantism and compare it to the early church. The doctrine of justification by faith alone is examined, highlighting the continuity with the early church fathers. The role of Scripture in the Anglican tradition is discussed, emphasizing its sufficiency for salvation. The sacrificial nature of the Eucharist is explored, distinguishing it from repetitive sacrifices. The conversation concludes by encouraging those struggling with church divisions to focus on the gospel and the proper administration of the sacraments. Brother Jonah, It is my understanding that the Reformers did not have access to many of the writings of the Apostolic Fathers and the Ante-Nicene Fathers, which we now have today. For example, the Reformers did not have the writings of St. Ignatius at their disposal . This is what I was told, but I don't know if it is true. Could you address this ?

RC's and EO's will argue that the saints are MORE alive now in their spiritual bodies, and yet the Eucharist is somehow less real if we talk of it as a spiritual presence? 🙄

As an Anglican, I still question how a Presbyterian "minister" (lay elder) can be considered to have "duly ministered" the sacraments (Article 19), if he has not been properly ordained by a bishop. Is he "lawfully called" (Article 23)?
@merecatholicity

Jeremiah may disagree with me, but I would hold that while we can't say that their sacraments or orders are completely invalid in any official sense-we aren't God-we can say that they lack apostolic authority and therefore lack sacramental assurance. I would not receive the Eucharist in a Presbyterian church because I believe it to be a defective form of government without apostolic authority and order.

The Vincentian canon is self-refuting and incoherent: Has the Vincentian canon itself 'been believed everywhere, always, and by all'? No, therefore it'self-refuting. It already has to have a definition in place of what a believer is and what the Church is, to even work.

Does the inclusion lf the filioque clause in the Anglican tradition stand in contradiction to the "always, everywhere and by all" and "return to pre-schism beliefs" goals of the english reformation? (Thanks 2019 for giving me an out). Or, would you say that ot falls into the category of liturgy and cerimony being adapted to local areas? If so, im not sure that works on theological grounds, but could possibly be convinced.
@merecatholicity
@merecatholicity 8 ай бұрын
I can't speak for Jeremiah, but while I am in full agreement with the theology of the filioque, I am fine with having it removed from the Creed due to the way in which it ended in the Creed in the first place.

@@merecatholicity So does Catholicity not depend on specific understandings of Trinitarian theology, then? Or, do you believe that those who originally penned the creed believed it as well, but either forgot to insert it, or figured that they did not need to? Not trying to be annoying, just honestly questioning your opinion, I'm not fully convinced one way or another, but am annoyed at how it got into the creed.
@merecatholicity
@merecatholicity 8 ай бұрын
@@johnsmoth7130 I think when the issue is studied, the Trinitarian theology is the same on both sides. There is simply a misunderstanding of what, specifically the West is trying to say.
