TNN ran this tribute to Neil Bonnet 2 days after his death at Daytona in 1994. To my knowledge, this tribute was only aired twice

I think that has to be the best interview I have ever seen with Darrell Waltrip. He truly is a man of Christ, a real man with integrity, honor and respect. Love ya DW.

Neil Bonnet had a lot of fans in Australia. This came from him winning the opening race at the Calder Park Thunderdome in 1988. A sad loss, not only to NASCAR and motorsport.

He was killed the day I was born. I've only ever seen him in old videos like this but he seems like he was a great guy.

One of the saddest days of Winston CUP. I remember it very well.

Dws speech is sad considering that Rodney Orr died I believe 3 days later. Shame we couldn't figure this safety concept out

It sadly took Dale dying to get NASCAR to really care about safety.

Great speech from Waltrip.

Great speech, indeed; I don't know if anyone could have said it better. As Ken Squier explains in part 2, however, Dale Earnhardt was equally eloquent in his silence; he really had nothing to say that would make things any better for himself or for anyone else.

Neil should have never tried getting back in a car. Yes it's what he loved, but he'd very likely still be around today

I agree. He should have taken the 1993 Talladega flip as a sign that he should give it up. He never was the same since the 1990 Darlington wreck. It’s a shame he didn’t keep announcing, as he was great at it.

Definitely. You can also hear Ken Squier nearly lose it at 6:39. He truly cared about the sport and the drivers.

DW's interview was honestly hard to listen to, not even the fact that they still had a bunch of guys to die after this.

Nobody realized this day that a much darker day was coming at Daytona for NASCAR. Daytona is a palace is speed and a killer when she strikes
@brianbooher73185 жыл бұрын
Yep when she strikes she's leathal and she will strike again sooner or later. Sad to say but it happen

Brian Booher Ryan Newman found that out the hard way during this year’s 500. Thankfully that wreck didn’t kill him, but it sure looked bad.

This may sound mean, but if people like Childress and Earnhardt wanted to be real friends of Neil's they would have sat him down and said, "Buddy, you have no business being in a race car" rather than encouraging him to drive and giving him cars and engines. It's a tough thing to say to a pal, but the time comes to everyone when you just can't do the things you used to and you got to be grown up enough to face it. Bonnett had a great future in TV and it was thrown away on a pipe dream.
@brianbooher22865 жыл бұрын
That might be true.but the truth is nobody was going to keep Neil out of a car .the only one who could have kept Neil out of a car was nascar.
@HavingFun-nj5oc5 жыл бұрын
Why do you say he had no business being in a race car?
@mikedegregorio91135 жыл бұрын
Previous brain injury from previous near fatal wreck. Wasn't the same and everyone knew it.

Neil was awesome but NASCAR shouldn't have ever let him back in a car.
