Here's a full episode of To Tell the Truth from 1970. In the first game, the panel must identify John Gray, a college student with light skin born to two black parents. In the second game, MAD Magazine co-founder and publisher William M. Gaines is the subject the panel needs to identify. Watch out for a cameo from none other than Dick DeBartolo (with some help from Gene Rayburn) at the end!!
NOTE apologies for the tracking issues in the first few minutes as well as later on in the video. 20+ year old tapes gonna be 20+ year old tapes.

I remember an episode of "leave it to beaver "at dinner 🍽 Wally was talking about a homework assignment that required him to read a copy of MAD magazine. 😠 Ward wasn't impressed 😕. I loved it. ❤

Thank you for posting this! The Bill Gaines episode used to be on KZfaq, but it disappeared a while ago. I go looking for it now and then, just in case, and I found your version! This is great!

I was 7yo in 1970 & remember watching this when it first aired, & I knew EXACTLY who Bill Gaines was & what he looked like (as an avid MAD reader). I can't believe NONE of the panelists got it right9!!

William Gaines didn't die. He's an immortal who simply disappeared and later reappeared as Matt Groening.

They obviously coached the imposters on some MAD facts; well done.

Well, the idea is that the imposters could tell the truth or lie their asses off. The real person has to tell the truth. Bill was telling the truth, but because it sounded so bizarre how he ran his business no one believed him.

This really makes me wish I'd had GSN earlier in its existence. ETA: When #1 said he was going to Kent State, I thought I heard Peggy say, "Oh, God". That leads me to think it was taped after May 4.

that first part of this show had as one of the contestants ..a student from Kent State University... I couldn't help but wonder... if this show was aired before or after the Kent State riots.. in which 4 students were killed.. in 1970... the song "OHIO".. from CROSBY, STILLS, NASH AND YOUNG ..comes to mind...

I figured the first segment was about William M. Gaines, so naturally it followed that those were his parents in the photos. So when they were called black, it really confused me. As for the John Gray segment, it was very revealing about racial stigma of the time that the two imposters instantly said "I'm of Swedish descent," and "I'm of German and English descent." Depressing that two people first have to establish that they are not black before telling anything else about themselves. But that was the reality.

@@mcgannahanskyjellyfetti6854 I missed Don's work, true, but there were other things to take its place. Even after Bill died, there were some changes to the magazine, but not enough for me to stop reading it. When they moved it to Burbank and put different people in, that was the last straw for me.

The William Gaines segments starts at 12:36: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/b7BjqbV82breY2Q.html Interesting that none of the 4 panelists connected the zany disheveled appearance of the real Bill Gaines with his zany disheveled magazine. I guess they assumed the publisher would look like a typical corporate boss from the 1970s.
