My grandmother used to cook milk thistle and use it in some recipes a few times a year. We never knew it was that helpful but apparently older people in some cultures knew it from experience. Thanks for this video.

Before there was modern medicine, there were herbs that had known effects. Much of this herbal knowledge was lost in our enthusiasm for pharmaceuticals. Traditions pass the wisdom down through the generations.

Thank You for sharing Dr Mindy. I'm curious if you have any video examples showing how to extract the oil easily from milk thistle at home to use on the skin ? 🙏

Hi Doc, I'm in Florida and a new subscriber and just starting going through your videos. I just finished watching the Usnea video, yup, I'm not watching in order, rather, I took a quick look for what I have going on on my own property at the moment (Usnea and Thistle *Bull Thistle). Anyway, I enjoyed the entire process in the Usnea video (from identification in the wild, gathering, prepping, and preparing). I hope to see more like the Usnea video.

Thank you! As spring blossoms I’ll be making more harvest-to-jar videos. Unfortunately all the trees in the Usnea video burned to the ground in the Beechie Creek fire. It will all grow back eventually, but we’re looking for a new parcel and a new cabin for now.

Just a heads up, I just purchased a few ounces of milk thistle seed from Sprouts Grocery Store, in the bulk spices section. Idk if the quality is the same but I thought eh what the heck. This video has the answers I was seeking. ❤

Hi. Dr Mindy... Can we use them for tea without toasting or roasting.
@dr.mindya.curryndpassionfo7590

Oh certainly! The toasting just makes them taste nutty delicious instead of slightly bitter. You will need to grind them still.

@dr.mindya.curryndpassionfo7590

That really depends on what you’re using it for. Generally taking a teaspoon sprinkled on a meal or three a day would be a fine place to start for liver support. More for more serious organ recovery.

A nice informative video, it's the kind of medicine you might use a few months every year not every day because it's bad for the Monarch butterflies that depend on Milk Thistle to survive. Subed to your channel.

Hello, I wander if there’s a way to remove the shell of the seeds? I haven’t got a coffee grinder, my blender does not do a good job grinding them finely like yours and it’s like trying to eat sunflower seeds chopped with the shell ( or whatever the outer layer of the seed is called) 🙁

Hmmmm…. I see a Chinese inventor has described the process ( patents.google.com/patent/CN103734877A/en) for hulling milk thistle seeds. Looks like you’ll just need a hulling machine, a gravity sieve, and a power separating machine. I’m thinking that the Krups coffee grinder ($30 Amazon) is probably a whole lot more affordable, plus you get to keep the excellent fiber content your gut needs to be healthy anyway. Oh…and I see in this research article that the liver protecting compound silymarin is evidently mostly located within the husk but just found in trace levels in the kernel of Milk Thistle seeds. The kernel has fatty oil and proteins, which are very nutritious, and only a much smaller amount of the medicine. (www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4239735/) So don’t toss those excellent husks just yet!

Nice video. You toasted them, but how about roasting them like unsalted sunflower seeds and eating them? Would you still be able to get benefits this way? Thanks and keep up the great work!
@dr.mindya.curryndpassionfo7590

Sure. Just be sure to pull them as soon as they start to barely smoke. Too long and they may burn and lose medicinal value.

Why toast the seeds is it just for flavor or to make silymarin more available ?? I have capsule machine so can take that way
@dr.mindya.curryndpassionfo7590
@dr.mindya.curryndpassionfo7590 3 жыл бұрын
I think it’s mostly for flavor. When I learned this it was emphasized that toasting did not appear to damage the silymarin significantly.

Hi, Great information. Where do you order your seeds from? Also what is the one herb or oil, seed you can take everyday for inflammation?

I haven't used it this way myself, but people do use milk thistle seed oil for skin benefits and scars. Helping the liver to function optimally helps all of the body's organs, including skin, so eating some toasted seeds is probably good as well.

Hi, I was diagnosed with fatty liver disease, I just wanted to grind them and put them in capsules, is that ok? And how many caps doing take a day? Thank you!
@dr.mindya.curryndpassionfo7590
@dr.mindya.curryndpassionfo7590 Жыл бұрын
Yeah, you can grind them an use them in capsules for a fatty liver. You should work with an ND or an herbalist in your area to determine appropriate dosing for your needs. It can change the speed in which pharmaceutical drugs are metabolized, for one thing.

Hi Dr.. my husband has fatty liver. Can he have it? Will a spoonful in dishes daily do help??
@dr.mindya.curryndpassionfo7590
@dr.mindya.curryndpassionfo7590 2 жыл бұрын
Yes. Eating this medicinal food may indeed help his liver heal and potentially get rid of excess fats. Addressing the cause is the most important thing. If he’s eating a poor diet, drinking too much, exposed to lots of chemicals regularly, that needs to be limited now. The milk thistle is only one part of the team he needs to get better.
