Can common sense help you rethink grip pressure, ball position and shoulder alignment in your golf swing?
This is the part 3 of a five-part series where I review my book "The Single Plane Golf Swing, Play Better Golf the Moe Norman Way" where I use common sense to uncover specific details of natural body movements of Moe Norman's swing to help you rethink your golf swing and, in the process, discover the easiest way to play golf.
In this video I revisit the importance of the address position, I also explore grip pressure and examine the position of shoulders and how they can be both open and closed at the same time.

These little tips are pure GOLD !!! pay special attention to, where the nose is located in line to the club, when in position. That little tip for me its the most important in all video. But yet all video has amazing info... but for me those little tips are what give me the most. Thanks Todd.

I been using single for about a year, but No instructors in my town. So I bought the board, video and the book. So I watch you on KZfaq. It’s been a slow process for me, lots of ups & downs but I see the process working better I’m 67 and no back pain when I play now that’s everything to me. Thanks Todd for all you do for the game of golf.

Been a single planer for 6-8 yrs now. I’ve learned so much more about the single plane swing from watching your videos. I tried placing my clubs further away from the ball at address like Moe for the 1st time today and struck my irons, woods and driver better then I have in a long time. I’m still looking at some of your previous videos and always look forward to getting the notifications when you have a new video. Tks Todd.

You should subscribed to his teaching on the website....whats on KZfaq is great but the single plane membership is worth its weight in salt ...It's so in depth that you feel like you gotta sit down and take notes but you don't...the instructors translate the information so well with visual, auditory and game motion that they answer any question you have through the instruction and it is a game changer...If you want to go to the next level this is it...You must apply yourself and match the model...it's no simpler than that

Todd. I was so disenchanted with my swing and scoring that I trashed my swing and started from scratch with the SPS. It has been 3 weeks of practice with one round along the way. The round was up and down but I expected that but hitting the range has me hitting the ball straighter and farther than when I was in my early Forties. I am committed to making this work and have been pleased with my progress in the last 3 weeks. This is the way for me and my buddies are looking at this swing as well. One area I need to work on is my driver to eliminate my small to medium fade. That will come but thanks for the help with my game. I’m 62 and hitting the ball more solid and longer than ever before. It works no doubt!

Despite the lockdown, I have set up a 30 yd. pitch along my driveway with a mat to hit from and a garbage can lid as a target. Despite temps in the 30s F and using my 58 degree wedge and a backswing to just past horizontal, l am landing 1/20 on the lid, 9/20 within 2 ft. and another 8/20 within 5 ft. Ball position, grip positions, club position and arm placements and proper back bend and tilt make hitting the ball on line a breeze! What a great method. Thanks Todd.

Todd, this is fantastic. I’m a lefty and grew up practicing a lot of similar positioning and movement with my grandfather when I was very young. It came very natural for me but then I started playing baseball. This, combined with moving a little further away from him really messed my natural rhythm up. I continued with baseball more and played golf less but now as an adult I have gotten into golf again (as of several years ago). I certainly don’t play often but recently started watching videos of Bryson and Mo and it motivated me to work on that swing again. After taking my son to the driving range a few times I have now started implementing some of these tips and positions and within 1 visit I was able to hit the ball straight again. My struggle has always been that movement in the hips because of how you swing a baseball bat. Believe me I am not crushing to the moon yet but this has really opened my eyes to how simple single plane can be. Thanks and you certainly have earned my subscribe!

Thanks for this whole series of teachings Todd. There's no doubt they're great and I like how you're using the top camera to show things that have never really been highlighted before because all the teachers just stick with the two traditional camera angles of down the line and face on. But there's one more camera angle which I think would be really helpful and that's out there on the target line looking back at the golfer. I think most golfers if you asked them what was wrong with their swings would say they cant get off their right sides and open their hips going through the ball and yet your take on this whole thing is very different than traditional and it's actually revolutionary but so simple. I think this "target line" camera could really make your unique point of view plain to see for the average golfer.

Great explanation, super thorough, not over spoken. I studied Moe for years and copied him the same way you did. Once I sort of ‘mastered’ the understanding I went out and shot 69 after tripling the 2nd hole that day (nerves cause I was so anxious to play my best golf). I’ve distanced myself from it in recent years and although I play scratch golf I know I could be straighter and more consistent going back to it. I think this series got me re-inspired. I hate getting lost in the swing from time to time which happens but with the single plane I don’t feel Like I ever did. So simple. I’d love to hear your take on Bryson as I see a pretty serious crossing over the line at the top and he does throw occasional giant hooks. He’s more upright for sure. His ball striking/consistency isn’t great relative to many players statistically. Also I wish Rickie had somehow found you when he was rebuilding his swing to give it a go. He’s not gonna have the distance of those big dogs so seeing his accuracy tack sharp would have been interesting. Thanks! PS…cool to see someone dedicate their life to Moe’s legacy and sharing with everyone so the brilliance isn’t lost to history.

All the videos are. 10 finger grip or not, I appreciate the clarity with which you are able to deconstruct the biomechanics of this swing style, article the benifits of the single plane, demonstrate the crucial biomechanics which if left unaddressed compromise the whole system and then provide tips to avoid the developments of bad habitats on the road to building the new good ones which when mastered, allow for the single plane swing to take hold and become new improved muscle memory

Todd, here is something I found when I watched Moe - and correct me if I'm wrong. I watched Moe demonstrate how he sets up to naturally increase the radius of the sweet spot. He was dragging the driver somewhat along the grass in his backswing. I stumbled upon this and please understand, I'm 69 and not a very golfer what-so-ever. This is what I "felt". I found that the torque I developed in my backswing was significantly greater simply because I could minutely stall/separate my arms from my torso by this subtle dragging of the club on the ground, albeit momentarily. Is it just me or is this some natural thing that most good golfers do without thinking about it? Or, am I "all alone" on this?

Awesome video Todd, the stance positions make 100% sense now. Can you also talk more about grip pressure, is it the same in both hands, how much (on one to 10 scale), and does grip pressure change throughout swing? Thanks again Todd.
@ToddGravesGolf
@ToddGravesGolf 4 жыл бұрын
I think that pressure in the hands is hard to describe so let me ask you. If you held a 1lb stick with the left hand how much pressure would you need to have to swing it. Secondly, if I asked you to Skip a rock, how much pressure would you apply to the trial hand (and where) to skip a rock? This is how the pressure should feel. A lot in the lead hand, not much in the trial hand.
@rblessons
@rblessons 4 жыл бұрын
@@ToddGravesGolf Agreed, if you take the rock skipping analogy, you would not need a lot of grip pressure because you are letting go of the rock. But with a club, you are striking a solid object (like hammering an object) so it seems you would naturally grip harder going into impact position? Also maybe more grip pressure at impact to stabilize club face? If too loose of a grip perhaps you would lose a sense of solid connection to the club? Thanks for the response!
@ToddGravesGolf
@ToddGravesGolf 4 жыл бұрын
@@rblessons Years ago I was invited to Tupelo Mississippi (home of Elvis Presley). Ram golf had a ball manufacturing plant and begin the plant they tested golf balls with an iron Byron. The iron Byron was a ball-striking machine where you bolted a club into the machine, set the compression to a certain pressure and the machine would fire the golf club at the golf ball. A few of the manufacturers shipped clubs so we could test the clubface (center of hit) variability and ball dispersion. One of the sets of clubs had been improperly glued together. When we placed the club into the iron Byron, we hit the first shot perfectly solid. The ball flew perfectly straight and long. We then adjusted the ball position so the machine would hit the ball 1/4 inch on the toe of the club. When the club hit the ball, the clubhead came off and flew into the field. What this demonstrates is that the shaft is simply projecting the club head. No matter how hard you hold the club, the job of the hands is to produce speed and direction of the club. The best way to think of it might be that the lead arm controls the direction of the club, the trail hand produces the speed. Take a look at some great players like Vijay Singh after impact, the trial hand is actually off of the golf club.

Hei Todd, first, many thanks for all of your efforts in promoting the single plane swing. I do have a complaint about the latter part of Part 3 where you discuss shoulder and torso angles. You don’t seem to conclude properly as to why you are concerned about these angles - what is the point of the torso being open and the shoulders being closed and the impact on club face orientation. Also, you slip in a mention of positioning the heel of the club towards the ball. This is a very important point but you mention it as a sort of after thought. From a serious supporter.
@ToddGravesGolf
@ToddGravesGolf 3 жыл бұрын
These "metrics" are important - regarding shoulder and torso because they are often confused where shoulders / Torso and "front of the arms" are considered the same. I am concerned about these because most people are taught to turn only...and not taught that at some point, which I discuss, the torso must slow down so that the arms/shoulders can deliver the club squarely through the ball.
@thomasfraser9072

I get it. You and Moe placing you club inches away from the ball with the club head appearing slightly open actually creates the leg of the head the club itself as it drops to the gateway of the down the line swing path of a single plane swing. Placing the hands as you describe on the grip of the club correctly is also important; but as Moe said he then disregards the hands altogether and never tries to controls the hands or the wrist at all during swinging of his arms back and forth. In my understanding any deliberate controlling of the hands will upset the spiraling of the club head squarely to the ball at impact. Correct? I saw a video of when Moe was older and blind in one eye after an operation where he attributed new insight of his swing to Manuel de la Torre. On that video he clearly said he simply now swings the club with his arms and no longer think of what his hands; wrist or lower body is doing at all. His most funny remark was "To think I was doing my swing all wrong after all these years. KISS; Keep it simple stupid"" Cheers

Hi Todd, I think I just got an “aha” moment. I thought I had to line the club up directly behind the ball, square, so that when I hit through it at impact it will be square. In this video we align the club head under our nose a few inches behind the ball. It sounds like what you are saying is that the beauty of the single plane swing is that the clubs stay square at impact and longer? In the conventional swing you have to be much more precise at impact. With single plane, if you hit all your positions in the right sequence you’ll square up every time because you have a longer squared impact zone? Also, I’m purchasing the alignment trainer, but does it need to be customized to each person (shorter or taller people, kids vs adults) or is stance width universal based on club selection? Loving the single plane swing videos. As long as you follow the fundamentals you keep generating more confidence and consistency. Thanks for all of it.

NO. The ball position is the same for every height.

@@ToddGravesGolf Not what I meant. I was talking about the spread between your feet. To take it to a ridiculous example. I am six feet tall, and my spread would likely be different with a driver than a 5 year olds would be. Of course I am speaking of a shorter adult golfer. Is there any adjustment made in your alignment and ball position trainer for the differences in height?

I use single length irons and woods (which are probably around the length of a 7 iron and 5 wood respectively). If I understand correctly the ball position is determined by shaft length and not loft. So, it follows that ball position (or rather feet position) can be same from wedge to long iron (similarly for fairway woods), correct?
@ToddGravesGolf
@ToddGravesGolf 4 жыл бұрын
Not really. Loft determines ball position. Think about it. A long iron has left shaft forward - a short iron has more shaft lean. By widening the stance, it allows the ball position to stay stationary - and change the lean of the shaft at impact. With Single Length Clubs I don't know the answer. I don't use them.

I am still waiting for the book and other items I purchased. I know $60.00 is not a lot of money, but I hope the items didn't get lost in the mail. Unless, of course, it is an e-book that I bought....that could be a problem.

Is it possible to video yourself with a high quality slow motion to see how you move through the swing? If you have done this for the viewer would you direct me to that video.

Great video. It would be helpful if you used an alignment magnet on your irons to show where the face points throughout the swing.

Turned the video off when it started on the grip. It's my understanding from other videos that Moe Norman never used the corporate-sponsored 'Natural Golf' grip of how to place the hands on the handle when he won all those tournaments and set those club records. Only after he stopped playing tournaments did he adopt the Natural Grip method of gripping the club...because he was paid to change his grip. So, is this "designed" grip actually Moe's grip at the top of his game, or is it merely a 'designed' grip to sell products from Natural Golf?
@ToddGravesGolf
@ToddGravesGolf 4 жыл бұрын
What exactly are you talking about? I teach Moe's Grip as a matter of fact, I produced a grip for a perfect Single Plane Swing that is legal to use on your golf clubs. The grips are custom fit for your hand size. SO again, what exactly are you talking about?

I disagree because you can't define athletic ability without being anecdotal. Tell me the science of athletic ability. I can show you she science of motion. I can show you she science of learning. Put the two tougher and you have skill. That is what you call "athletic ability".
