Can we use common sense to rethink your golf swing?
This is the first of a five-part series where I review my book "The Single Plane Golf Swing, Play Better Golf the Moe Norman Way" and use common sense to uncover specific details of natural body movements of Moe Norman's swing to help you rethink your golf swing and, in the process, discover the easiest way to play golf.

This is pure gold. The best golf instruction out there. I can't believe this is available for free. I've had many golf lessons from PGA qualified pro's here in the UK. I've never improved, they've all told me something different. My game is transformed since following your instruction. I've been playing your way for a few years now. I've watched all Moe's content. Moe was a Genius and a Lovely Man. It's thanks to you Todd that Moe lives on.

Im a former PGA Pro. I spent about 15yrs in the industry most of it as a GM of a local course. I had the same experience as you. I basically taught myself how to play, was very much a feel player. I won a few local tournaments and played on my College team. While in college I became a PGA Pro and started working as an Asst at a pretty popular course. The Head PGA Professional gave me a few lessons before out state tourney and after, my game completely plummeted. I played terribly and struggled to ever get back to where I was. I stopped playing for about 10yrs now. I always remembered Moe Norman and his single plane swing and Natural golf from back in the day. To me it made a ton of sense. Now that Bryson is showing that it can work at the highest level, I look forward to more people trying it. Good luck with your teaching and your channel. Keep up the great work!

Roy Pendergraft I am a senior (71) and have been playing golf for about 15 years. I feel like I wasted 13 years because I struggled with the golf classic golf swing. I have been an athlete my whole life and even taking lessons and practice, i just could not find any consistency. For that whole time I struggled with shooting in the mid 90's to the low 100's. Granted, I play one time per week and practice is not easy because the closest course with a range is an hour away. Two years ago, I found a Moe Norman video on KZfaq and decided to make a change. I did all that I could to mimic Moe but something was missing. I got fitted for a set of Cobra Single Length Irons and made a total commitment to the Single Plane swing. Then, I discovered you and your videos. Man, you made golf fun again. Over the past 2 years, my score has been in the mid 80's to low 90's. That is 10 strokes a round. I watch your videos over and over and find them very helpful. Thank you for the Rethink the Address Position with The Single Plane Golf Swing parts 1, 2, and 3. With this, I am on a quest to take 5 strokes off in the next 6 months. I have committed to practice at least 1 day per week and to play at least 1 day per week (more if I can). Thanks again for being so unselfish and sharing.

Thank you for explaining how you started your journey. I have been watching your videos regularly and am amazed how quickly it has impacted my ball striking. In one of other videos, you mentioned that if you can’t drive the ball, the game is not fun. You are so right! I hit 11/14 fairways and my misses only required one punch out. What a fun game when you have a chance to score. Thank you for sharing!

This video strikes home for me. No pun intended. I was trying to follow the Jim Hardy swing and was not getting it. I just could not figure out how to drop my hands and keep my hands close to my thighs (inner arc) while the club head traveled on the outer arc. This video got me excited as I see you have shown what my exact issue is. Book is on the way as I type.

Hi Todd, greetings from UK...just watched this after previously watching a lot of your other material. Frankly I've been a bit shy to have gone to my local driving range to do a Moe swing! But as there's a lock down here (all golf clubs and ranges are shut), went into the garden to hit a wedge with some holey plastic balls using your guidance and... wow... never hit so many so straight, well grouped and no divots! It also felt so effortless. Put an order in for your book - not many on sale in UK yet - so will be keenly awaiting the next video chapters in coming days. Keep up the great work.

You and your team have been great mentors for me for the last 5-6 years playing single plane here in UK - The best thing I ever did was join your academy - Moe has been an inspiration - Just so pleased you met Moe and knew his style of play and his story needed to be told - the potential was that his story and style would have been lost to thousands had you not been on your own search for golf perfection - Thanks for your perseverance persistence to get Moe's great legacy out there.

I started golfing at 30(1992), worked my way to a 5-hdp, shot 2 69s playing 3 times a week. Now I'm a 12hdp at 57. I'm on my journey back with the single plane golf swing. Thanks so much. How did golf swing instruction get so far off kilter??? There are so many more things that can go wrong with the traditional teaching on the golf swing. It's obvious, once you get into it and Todd Graves explains this very well. The Rethink series of videos are fantastic. I started playing golf at 13 and the last time I played a golf round was about age 50. Traditional golf swing. I had one lesson on irons when I was 13. Very good lesson by the way. Now, nearly 15 years later, I started playing golf again. Mainly just for exercise. So I started to watch PGA tour pros and noticed that many times their drives did not end up on the fairway. At one point Tiger Woods couldn't find the fairway, although he has corrected that. I also noticed that many pro golfers kind of hop to impact or something like that. Todd Graves explains this very well. At the time I didn't understand why they were doing this but now it's clear. I watched a bunch of Moe Norman exhibition videos and came across Todd Graves videos. So I decided to use the Moe Norman, Single Plane Golf Swing. I've started playing a par 3 course about 5 to 6 weeks ago. For the last 2 to 3 weeks I've been trying the Single Plane Swing. My last round yesterday I was hitting my tee shots 3 at the middle of the green and 2 shots on either side of the green. [playing late in the afternoon when there aren't many golfers on the course.] Three tee shots within maybe 15 feet of each other. The other two at either side of the green, say within 90 feet of each other. And I'm just starting to learn this swing. Pretty soon I'll be signing up for the Graves Academy having them analyze my swing. Need to get my club head speed up to about 200 to 225 mph though. Well, maybe 100 mph. Got a used set of Tommy Armour 845s irons and they are working better than my old clubs. Maybe 10 yards further. My swing still isn't where it should be (like 165 yards with a 7 iron which is what I'm working towards). Not a bad set of clubs for $80.

Simple. The golf swing go so far off because of the ONE main flaw at address - hanging the arms below the shoulder. This Mistake causes all of the problems. Hit a ball on the ground with a stick. You would never hang the arms straight down.

Hi Todd, I have been pouring over your videos over the past six weeks and have adopted the single-plane swing. I am lucky I have a mat and net so I can hit balls. Without doubt my strike and balance has markedly improved. Such an easy swing. Am now confident that I can make great contact when the address position is done correctly. Given I have a damaged balance organ in my right ear I can hardly believe I can make such good contact. Can't wait for the lockdown to finish and I can see how straight my shots are. Thank you for presenting this to us.

Remember back in 2008 being the dummy for your first video lesson, improved 20 shots in 6 weeks- that is correct from 95's to 75 in 6 weeks!! After a 5 day OKC camp and 3 day Gold Coast camp still soak every word I can. An observation, when taking my stance with the club hovering over ball, my club is exactly under my eyes which means as my stance widens, the club head is further back from the ball - every time, every time!!! Another observation from the OKC camp, my right hip initiates the swing and position 1 is easy, peasy, all you had to do at Surfers Paradise camp was to arm-flatten my swing- thanks Todd , Tim and your great team.

Hi Todd, I have looked at most of your blogs and tried the swing as you showed us out here! It was great when I got the set up right, but I was never consistent with it as my golf mates giggled As I got so frustrated! I really wanted to play the single golf swing, but in reality one needs the tuition which you received from Moe! If there was an instructor of the single golf swing here in Scotland, then yes I would love to have a lesson/s with them! So for now I am back gripping the club with the fingers!

Since I've returned from my 3 day school, I've been working so much I just haven't had the time or energy to practice like I want, but your videos help keep me involved. As a scientist by occupation, I thought at first, when I started golf 8 years ago, that a straight arm-club address would make the swing more simple. But I gave up this idea because I couldn't find any lessons and professional golfers with such a style. Glad I've found Moe and your lessons recently. Moe's style is just simple and physically, scientifically reasonable. Now I enjoy golf Moe Norman's way. Thank you, from Japan. ありがとう。

Todd, Wow! Thanks for the reply message. I seldom put my personal message on UTube, but that was an exception. I used to work in Toronto 30 years ago. I once visited Kichnner. I didn’t know about Moe then. I didn’t play golf then. Eight years ago I was working in DC for two years, when I started golf. As a scientist I tried to improve my golf mechanically/scientifically, based on the ‘standard’ style. I liked Ben H. especially. I admired his beautiful flow of the swing. Just recently I found Moe and your lessons. I’ve got your book. At first Moe’s swing didn’t look very beautiful, but now it looks beautiful to me, and it worked on me from the very beginning. My score has got coming down from 90s, 80s, and 70s sometimes. It’s really a fun, besides the scores, to see the beautiful straight trajectories of the balls. I’ve got a little bit of Feeling of Greatness. Also, as a lay Tanka poet, I especially love his word; It’s Poetry in motion. I’m just a retired Sunday golfer, but I’m sure I can enjoy life along with golf Moe Norman style. Thank you Todd. Hope your very success in the instructions of golf in the Moe’s style, attaining more and more golfers in this Our style. PS, Hope you stay safe with regard to the nCoV.

Beginning to learn and rethink your golf swing from conventional to the one plane will be frustrating at times. The difference between the two is very simple, there is a light at the end of the tunnel with the one plane motion and it's a given, you will get and be a better ball striker. It's up to the individual , not the teacher, to take the information Todd so willingly shares, to find the light. Once you find it no one can take it away from you except yourself. This may be your last chance to find what everyone is looking for, consistency. Now it's up to YOU!!! Good luck 🍀👍🏻

Terry below says pure gold. I cannot agree more. I have one really important thing to say. Take a look at some of the most dominating performances of all time, but one should not really include Tiger because he is one in a trillion. Look at Rory, 2011 US Open and 2012 PGA. Those performances would indicate that he would win two majors every year. Look at Phil when he is on. Look at DJ and JT when they are spot on. Koepka, oh my gosh. Well then if they win by destroying the field, then where are they 3 weeks later? The answer is simply that the traditional swing cannot possibly lead to consistency at the highest level. Look at Tennis. It's like the top players cannot possibly lose. Look at the best snooker players. The top players can almost not possibly lose. Look at Golf. If golf was like those other sports, the top 5 guys would always be in the top 3, but alas that does not happen. Todd everything you say makes total sense. I was a 12 handicap and I tried the "Moe Norman" swing 4 years ago at the age of 58. That summer on the driving range, I could hit ten 7-irons in row directly at the flag. It was scary, but the lack of feeling, understanding, and muscle memory resulted in me not being able to bring it to the course. I was using the 10 finger grip, with the club stuck in the palm of my hands as Moe taught. Plus I had thin grips and the grip did not fit properly in my hand. That grip was the worst feeling thing ever, and when I got to the course, I could not hit the ball at all that way given the 5 min in between shots. Now thanks to Todd and these videos the grip feels good and I actually understand what I am doing. I am committed to this for the rest of the summer, God willing if we even have golf with current Covid issues. Thank you Todd!

I have been using the single plane swing ever since I 1st saw Moe Norman. One thing I never was able to really fully understand or mimic was how he put the club 12 inches behind the ball. I always felt like I wasnt properly aligned to hit the ball straight and was unsure of where I would strike the ball. I noticed something about Moe today in this video that I had never seen or noticed about how he gets there. He actually aligns everything at the address of the golf ball, then he brings the club back in a little quarter or eighth swing and places the club behind the ball 12 inches. In everything I've seen you and Moe do, I have not seen a good way to get to that starting point. I think I see how he got there now, but its very subtle and might be a good future video for you to show.

I'm 67, with all that I used to shoot in the 80's, now in the high 90's. My back hurts, and it's just not fun anymore. I'm hoping the Moe Norman style will help with pain.

Why did Moe hit it so straight, all of the time? (And even the best pros hit it off-line relatively often?) Because, at impact, the tangent to the arc of the swing must be oriented to the target line for the ball to fly straight off the club face that is square to the line. Moe increased his window of opportunity with his shift of the swing plane from RHS to LHS thus increasing the time that the club face was square to the tangent of the arc. If you only have 1/10 of one inch and .05 seconds to contact the ball on line, you will hit it poorly more often than if you have 3 inches and 0.5 seconds available for contact to occur while the club face is still square to the target line. Moe mastered this improvement and Todd has refined it to an applied science. WELL DONE!

Todd, I have been tinkering with this swing for years and shoot mid 80’s. I wanted my son to learn golf the “right” way and have him taking lessons. He shows tremendous potential when in his lessons but on the course he can’t replicate it with no coach and I can’t help because I don’t know the traditional swing. Am I hurting him if I start him on the single plane swing path? There aren’t many pros using this swing but I can feel his frustration and worry he will leave the game. Thanks Mark.

Todd, what do you think about the possibility for many traditional golf swing pros, like teaching pros, to use a Single Plane Swing for their drivers and keeping their traditional golf swing for their fairway shots, approach shots and chips? Thinking outside the box a bit but I suspect if you can get some of them hitting their drives on the fairway most of the time you might win over a whole lot of new students for the Single Plane Swing. Like Rich Shiels breaking 75. I posed this question to him.

Dude, all you need is slippers and you're Mr Rogers! Lol. Your story sounds familiar. I worked with Ben Doyle for 6 years. Same result as you. Plane angle shifts are so hard and requires impeccable timing most people can't accommodate. In 1994, I was at the pga teaching and coaching summit where Craig Shankland did a presentation on Moe. I never forgot it.

Hi Todd from lockdown England. I hope you will cover the trail foot staying on the ground through impact. This is the one area I have the most problems with in that it just seems natural to raise the foot, but I’m persevering and trying to keep my foot stable. Really look forward to your videos while in lockdown, thanks

I had a hard time, too.. but I literally grew so tired of early extending into the ball that I became so desperate to fix it... that trail foot is almost essential to that-- but most of all it's the shaft angle matching your address-- to impact is what really helped the early extension. you have to just really take a lot of slow swings with both feet on the ground just don't lift it keep telling yourself. the slower the better, and then do some perpetual back and forward swings with those feet still on the ground. It's okay to lift the foot after impact, of course, but during the downswing initiation is a no-no. it took me around 600-1000 golf balls just to really feel comfortable keeping that foot down until impact, but it's got to be natural you can't be forcing it down because then that's fighting with something your body is wanting to do-- you got to get your body accepting that.

Check your lead hand position. If it is not your lead hand (too Strong), it must be the path. I would take the club more inside in the backswing to make sure you come from the inside in the downswing. Check your Lead Hand Grip first.Let me know.

Hi Todd...well I deleted all my golf subscriptions on youtube and got rid of all the golf videos I was saving and am now fully committed to your way of teaching. With that in mind, I have a couple of questions and a comment. 1. When I line up, take my neutral grip with thumb on the top and put the club under my nose and/or 6" behind the ball, to me, it looks as if the face of the club is pointing to the right. Am I wrong? If no, then, I would have to change my stance and face slightly to the left of the target. If yes, then, I would somehow have to change my grip so that the face faces the target, right? Comment? 2. When you put the right hand on the club...which way to the tips of the fingers point? Up? Right? What should the "V" of the right hand point to? Right shoulder? To the right of the right shoulder? Obviously I agree with you that the grip is very important especially if the hands/wrists do not move until AFTER the hit. Comment: With the above in mind, you may want to have a "closeup" of your right and left hands as you put them on the club. It's hard to tell when the camera is away from you. I patiently await your comments on my 2 questions. Thanks. Gerry

The Tilt of the body will square the face. You must tilt the body at address. Tilt the body and the V of the right hand points to the right shoulder.

Have been working on the single plane swing for about five weeks with good success. Using the conventional swing I employed a fairly narrow stance. With body tilt it appears that in order to have balanced weight it is necessary to have a stance that is at least slightly outside the shoulder width. Otherwise the tilt throws weight to the trail side. Do you agree?
@ToddGravesGolf

Yes. Stance width is very important for ball position as well. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hqmInKyhnL-5h6c.html

Hey Todd , do you think it may help to use single length clubs? ala Bryson Dechambeau.Wouldn't that simplify things even further?
@ToddGravesGolf
@ToddGravesGolf 4 жыл бұрын
HI Paul. Personally I don't see a huge advantage of Single length Irons for most players. Why? because even Bryson DeChambeau has multiple lengths clubs although his irons are single length. Why multiple length? Because you can produce more speed with longer clubs (longer lever). Most players with average swing speed would end up with Driver (length), Woods (length) Hybrids (length), Irons (length) and Putter (Length) - a minimum of 5 different lengths clubs. Now if you think about it, the irons being the most at same length, lets say your 4 iron to PW are same length. You are really only gaining the advantage of a 4 an 5 iron (being shorter). The wedges, being longer) are actually harder to control because they are longer. In summary having single length irons only creates an advantage with TWO irons which you rarely hit. Therefore, I don't see an advantage of single length irons.

@@ToddGravesGolf Thanks for the quick and in depth reply, I have your book and and have watched a lot of your videos.Last year I spent a reasonable amount of time trying the single plane swing with a noticeable difference in ball striking (especially at the range) but not such great results back at my golf club.Mainly I think the reason for this was the fact that where I play has an excessive amount of uphill, sidehill and downhill slopes.Having said all of this I will be giving it even more of a go this year, if we ever get back on the golf course!

True. Many players have a "move" that compensates for the hands being higher at impact.

I don't have any idea? Most professionals are really great golfers (obviously) and they hit the ball really well - well enough to score. Scoring is how you make $ on tour. If the fairways were more narrow and the greens smaller, you would see this swing on tour.
