Moe Norman's Grip is a controversial subject because many people get confused by holding the club into the "palms" of the hands. The problem that most instructors face is that you must consider body, arm and club face orientation as part of the hand position (Grip).
In this video, I discuss the much debatable subject - Moe's Grip.
About the Single Plane Golf Swing
The Single Plane golf swing is not a quick fix golf technique. It is a system, beginning at address, that simplifies the most important moment of the golf swing - impact.
Starting at address on two planes where the arms hang straight down at address, the Conventional golf swing is complicated. Because the arms are hanging straight down, a conventional golfer must lift the body into impact creating stress on the back.
This upward movement to accommodate the two planes is unnecessary.
The Single Plane Golf swing simplifies the golf swing by eliminating the need for the upward movement by starting and impacting on the same plane.

Feel like people confuse his grip so often. Nice job breaking it down and explaining properly.

I have to thank you for what you have done for my game. I bought the books and foot boards and watched your videos. I am sure there is a final piece for everyone. For me it was learning to step into my shoe with the front foot to initiate the down swing. Thanks again for all you have done. This is clearly the best way to hit a golf ball consistently with a measure of confidence. As an added plus, my back never hurts as it usually did using the traditional method I was originally taught decades ago. As an aside, recently I was on the range in Southern California hitting balls and watched a promising female junior golfer. I wondered how long her somewhat frail, athletic body could possibly hold up as she went through clubs with her parents hovering over her. I have an MS in Sport Performance and so wanted to correct the traditional method she was using. Thanks for all you have done preserving the best way to safely hit a golf ball. All the best...

Fantastic explanation Todd. This is one of the best videos I’ve ever heard explaining body position and it’s relation to grip and squaring the face. Well done !

My swing philosophy at the range tonight was to 'focus on right hand grip tension in thumb/forefinger like skipping a stone'. The actual swing thought was 'tension'. I set up on the far right of the range next to a tree line 'cause my mistake is block right, or too much fade. It forced me to hit it straight and/or slight draw. I ended up drilling them straight down the line with a grip tension of 7 or 8 out of 10. Single plain frees your swing thought(s) and just allows you to execute. I'm finding these videos exceptionally helpful, so thanks.

What about reverse overlap grip ? I have a bad habit of losing my grip. When I try regular overlap it hurts my left hand so I use baseball grip. I have stubby fingers with big palms. I wish you guys had classes in Portland Oregon. keep up the good work Todd moe would be proud of what you have accomplished in his name.

I went out to the range today and for fun, I tried the overlap grip instead of my normal 10 fingers….wow, noticeably longer and straighter more often…..putting my trail pinky over my lead pointer finger seems to help keep my lead wrist from opening the face. And like you said, more of a feeling of “just clamps”. It felt like I had less swinging strength at first but I stuck with it and all of a sudden it felt natural and consistent.

My drives are mostly straight but my 7 iron (short to mid irons) mostly high draw while trying to use the single plane. The ball flights seem good to me. Does this make sense and/or is it a problem?

Moe had the most unorthodox style but he was insanely accurate with good distance with his clubs. With that said does your body design dictate how much you can lean during orientation and impact. position

I just signed up yesterday for the single plain course. My question is with this system should we rotate the hands or not?

I’m willing to bet that you’ll see the BEST Sushi Chef’s employing exact or extremely similar grip on their Sushi Knives. If you intend on making the most precise “cut”, you’ll develop the best possible grip or you won’t be able to make “precision” cuts.

I heard Moe say his right hand grip flows through the life line of the right hand. Is this correct!

Do you get questions about wrist bowing/cupping? Is that how Bryson D injured his wrist?

Orientation of the body most certainly influences the perception of how the club is being held. In fact, Moe seemed to have a trigger move between initial set up and the start of the backswing that involved the left shoulder. However, from my experience, having been fortunate enough to chat with Moe on the range, hit some balls with him and see the callouses on his hands, I have no reason to not believe his claim that he gripped the club, primarily, in the palm of his hands. From his own statements and supported by seeing him play, I have no reason to believe that he ever employed anything resembling a "Vardon" of overlapping grip. If you saw that, I'd be interested in hearing about that observation.

I agree with you. Todd Grave's swing has a different mechanism from Mo Norman's, and I think it's due to the grip. I think that Mo Norman's right hand grip naturally creates more angles of tilt and makes the swing path more stable. So Todd’s swing is very different from Mo Norman’s swing. Although it looks similar, Todd's swing is similar to a typical golf swing

God almighty. Moe Norman’s clarion call to us is how simple his golf swing was. I need a UN interpreter to figure out what you are postulating. We are receiving third hand information from your second hand information. That’s the problem. K.I.S.S.
