I once used ready action as "when someone shoots an arrow at me or my allies I will Catapult that arrow back to Archer." My DM made me roll 1d20+spellcast bonus and I succed. Saved my guy from an arrow and killed the Archer. Love that.

The dm broke the rules by making you roll that. That's a dex save for the creature you are attacking. You shouldn't have to roll anything.

@@sheoofisles1573 Ehhh. As a readied action its arguable that it should have worked without a check. Like, you planned it, you were watching for someone to start taking a shot, you'd see them draw an arrow, nock it, then fire. You'd release the spell as the arrow took flight. But its up to the DM and I wouldn't call it entirely unreasonable to make you work for that.

The subtler bit of *catapult* is that it only uses Somatic components. You can be entirely hidden and cast it.

Or use Subtle Spell metamagic and do it in someone’s face. Be in a conversation with a guard and have a rock fly at him from behind.

I was playing CoS, and was a Divine Soul Sorc. I was playing a Barovian native, and he had taken Catapult specifically to be able to catapult a stake through Strahd's heart.

@@ericpeterson8732 you don't stake a vampire while they are up and about for multiple reasons, the legendary resistances included. You stake a vampire while they are incapacitated in their coffin. The catapult spell is just purely for thematics and flavor to really create a dramatic build up until the moment that it really pays off.

A subtle wording in the spell that's often missed, is that it says you fling the object *up to* 90 feet, not 90 feet until it hits something. This implies you have exact control of how far you want to fling the object. So in theory you could fling an object and have it stop an inch in front of someone's nose and then drop straight down to the ground. Also useful if you just want to move an object without breaking it. Just fling it towards yourself and have it stop in your hand.

The Catapult spell, has served my Eldritch Knight “Kathos Fire-Forge of clan Battlehammer” extremely well. We heard that the Ogre Chieftain “the great Ulfe” had two large Dire wolves that he kept very hungry as to keep them extremely fierce in battle. Using this information Kathos purchased 10lbs of the best meats he could procure in Mithral Hall before venturing out. Once the impeding battle started Ulfe was in the back behind a few other Orges. Kathos launches 5lbs of prime rib-eye in a direct line to the chieftain but over two of his front line fighters. The two enemy front liners made their Dex saves. So the steak dinner continued to Ulfe in the back line who FAILS his dex save! Ulfe takes a good amount of damage. (The Dm didn’t make it easy thou). Both of his extremely hungry Dire wolves fail wisdom saves, Ulfe also fails both of his Animal handling checks to command either wolf. Hunger wins over loyalty and the dire wolves feast on their owners face taking all three of them out of the battle and actually doing a severe amount of damage to the distraught chieftain. After that the team made quick work of the entire enemy force. During their next long rest the other 5lbs was grilled on the campfire as a celebration dinner. The Catapult spell would serve Kathos well another day during a surprise attach on his home Mithral Hall. The second wave of attackers were ostrich mounted Orcs. Kathos finds a bit of high ground ahead of the rushing forces. Takes his grappling hook and rope, casts Catapult. Makes all his checks to wrap it around a stalactite, then pulls with all of his athletic skills on the rope and is able to clothesline over a dozen of the mounted Orcs off their mounts. Also the while not effecting any of the shorter dwarves on the battlefield.

Catapult is the Ace in the Hole for my Artificer. Once I created an Alchemy Jug, I had a ready ingredient for a near endless supply of Acid Vials. Acid Vial, Holy Water, and Alchemists Vials made perfect grenades to use with the spell. Multi-varied damage increase? Yes, please. It's the perfect improvised weapon.

Not just that, the artillerist creates tiny turrets. Once you reach lvl 9 they can be blown up! Magical tinkering also uses tiny objects as is the homunculous, I'm sure these would have a lot of creative uses :D

@@Piemasta9000 my Artificer covered one of the BBEG's in mayo in our current campaign. The BBEG returned the favour by stabing my character in the neck. He almost died but it was worth it just for the look on the DM's face.

My favorite use of catapult is having an artificer casting it from an infused battleaxe, making it into an axe-gun.

My favorite catapult interaction is the spell enlarge/reduce. Find a rock that is 40ish pounds, cast Reduce on it. Cast catapult on it, drop concertation midflight which instantly enlarges the rock back to 40 pounds. DM gets to figure out what happens.

Congratulations you've just managed to use two rounds to use a 1st and 2nd level spell slot to effectivelly essentially upscale Catapult to an 8th level spell slot (using the At Higher levels for reference). Either that or the object stops as soon as it returns to normal mass and density, conserving energy; that said, with dnd's non-euclidean geometry you could easily put the 40lbs mass 45 feet above the target instead, releasing Reduce to stop it in the air and let it fall down with its full weight, forcing a different (probably easier) dex save but possibly dealing damage in d10s instead.

@@darthmullet6138 yup. That. The spell specifically specifies how much damage the object does regardless of what it weighs, so a heavier object doesn't do more damage than lighter one.

The artificer in my campaign has a homunculus. He keeps bombs in his backpack. As a bonus action he commands it to move over to throw a bomb from his backpack. He readies an action to cast catapult, and then catapult's the active bomb when the humonculus throws it.

Why does everybody think they can hit a moving target with this spell? Like the guy using it on an enemy's arrow, even with holding your action, how are you going to target the moving object in a reaction? It takes a 3rd level monk to do that, with special training. Not with just a 1st level spell.

@@ericpeterson8732 simple, different groups play the game in different ways since there are things that work for them that might not work with other groups, and the game allows for people to be creative with how things work if they so choose. Now stop effectively trying to enforce how you play the game onto others, get that redwood out from where the sun doesn't shine, because the idea that different groups allow different things isn't an idea someone should have to spell out for you.

I had a bag of silver shavings, while fighting in the sewer against Wererats. Placed them in a turdball we found there and launched it with the Catapult. A semisolid shot laced with silver. Was a rather effective fragmentation/penetration on it.

If you throw a rock and someone who's holding their action casts enlarge, you can launch a port-a-boulder

I don't think so. I understand that it should work that way, but there are two factors at play: one, the spell only works on a 5 lb. object. Once you enlarge that rock, it no longer weighs 5lbs and the spell fails. It's not a real catapult, there is no conservation of momentum with magical movement. It's one of those things that should work in the real world, but this is the game world and it doesn't. Just as if you cast the 1st level spell on a rock weighing 40lb, (Enlarge increases weight by 8 if I am not mistaken) the spell fizzles and the rock doesn't move. And two, even if you can convince your DM to allow a magical spell to follow real world physics, casting one spell while attempting to cancel another one is problematic. Or in your example, the second person would have to time the enlarge spell perfectly or fail to enlarge it in time. Normally, you are casting enlarge on a stationary target. Casting it on a moving target, especially one moving 90 ft in 6 seconds would be very difficult. But that's neither here nor there, it wouldn't work because of the first reason. Once you alter the object, the spell fails and the now enlarged rock drops harmlessly to the ground.

Alternatively, reduce a Boulder if one is available, Catapult it and have them drop concentration so the Boulder goes back to full size before impact.

@@TheFearsomeRat You will still get into the problem described above - it doesn't weigh under 5 pounds anymore, so the spell ends immediately. At least at some tables. If you have a nice DM, this spell can be incredibly abused. As can be any spell when the DM is forgiving

My favorite combo for Catapult is Enlarge/Reduce. 1) Reduce on a Ballista Bolt, now its 1/8th its weight 2) Catapult the bolt 3) When it hits, drop concentration The bolt will grow within the wound and be nearly impossible to remove. Heat Metal and walk away.

2 rounds to disable a basalisk with, first catapult on vase of glue, second round catapult bag of flour - cannot see as now covered with glue and flour.... no sight attack.... also great for eldritch knight, warhammer = 5lb, can summon back if one of their chosen weapons, for the full on Thor attack

First time I saw Catapult used, there was an item the party wanted to retrieve from an obviously dangerous room. The sorcerer just catapulted it out of the room, I believe taking damage as it collided with him.

the spell says "up to" 90 feet. That makes me think that you could use it like you suggested, but stop it early from smashing into you. Or smash it into the wall next to you.

I've used Catapult in conjunction with flasks of Alchemist fire to build Dot into damage, as well as creating 5' squares of terrain denial. That was during the 2015 "Princes of the Apocalypse" campaign. It's also a great way to deal with Kobold Inventor's inventory...like throwing a wasp nest at a target to release a swarm and so on.

Be me, an Artificer. Get proficiency with Alchemist Tools. Prepare some Acid Flasks. Catapult them on enemies for max damage. Profit.

You are cute. Replace acid with glass jars full of rot grub. Watch then your enemy panic and frantically unequip his/her armor in the middle of combat covered with these nasty worms and burn themselves with a torch to avoid them burying through flesh to their heart. That's how my DM passed on a valuable lesson to our group : never underestimate the goblin servants in a sorcerer's dungeon...

My favorite use of catapult in game is when my human artificer taught a skeleton mage that casting firebolt out of the darkness is a very bad idea. When our monk ran in to finish them off, he found the skeleton cowering in corner, covered in vodka with half of its ribs shattered.

Realizing that catapult doesn't have to come from near you is a huge revelation to me. Sometimes I miss little things like this with spells... and honestly that just... changes everything. Thank you for pointing this out. This spell went from okay to amazing to me now, combined with all its other elements. Kinda wish it was an attack roll now instead of a dex save, so I could double the range.

Todd how has your love of Warlocks and Eldritch knowledge missed the BEST use of Catapult?! The Genie Warlock’s Sanctuary Vessel brings you and your friends into your vessel. Your vessel most likely isn’t more than 5 pounds. Cast Glyph of Warding with this spell where the trigger is “when we enter the vessel” and it shoots your vessel over obstacles. Do you need to cross a moat or a castle wall that’s shorter than 90 feet? Shoot yourselves over it! If the vessel breaks all you have to do is entreat your patron for a new one on a long rest.

my favorite is to put a bunch of darts in a bag of holding with catapult and glyph of warding cast on them. The glyph trigger is when the dart comes out of the bag it activates catapult in the direction the bag is facing. put as many darts as your GM allows into the bag and when the time is right make them cry when you turn the bag inside out pointing at the big bad. Instant Gatling Gun LOL.

A companion collects bitey, stinging, creepy crawlies in a jar and sorta makes a swarm of insects. They arent controllable though and incidentally they aslo swarmed a party member too. lol

I just finished playing a gravity wizard who used catapult. I had an alchemist jug. I bought alchemist fire and created vials of acid and poison that I would launch. My favorite item to launch was a simple net. Once the net hit an enemy they would take damage and become restrained.

Pro-tip: Bring a few bags of corn-flower to yeet down the hall with this spell so even if you miss, you create a AOE to obscure the vision of your enemy.

I had a dwarven wizard that wore 5 pound links of chain. He would drop them at the beginning of the battle and use them for ammunition. I could not get the DM to allow an increase to armor for the chains worn, but I still liked the idea and kept it.

An artificer can catapult a bundle of 5 acid vials. With the alchemical jug infusion you can make free acid.

Catapult throws an object you say? Vorks with alchemest fire or vial of acid you say? Here is the plan: Step 1: obtain a portable hole Step 2: craft/ have crafted an oversized "shield" that the hole can fit on. And place the 2 together. Step 3: buy a dangerously large sum of alchemist fire/ acid vials. Step 4: buy a net and some rope Step 5: gather the vials into the net and tie closed. (Leave a small string with one more attached on the outside.) Step 6: load the "cannon" (have the end just poking out so you can have a focus to shoot out.) Step 7: fire.

Depending on how your DM rules heavy objects falling Catapult could be absolutely devastating when combined with Enlarge/Reduce. Reduce something very heavy, that object now weighs 1/8th as much as it once did. Now upcast Catapult until it's able to fling that reduced object. At the moment of impact, drop your concentration on your Reduce spell and suddenly you have an attack that logically should do waaaaay more damage. If going by the damage calculation given in the spell itself it should be about 8 times as many d8s. An extreme example but you could reduce a 360 pound anvil down to 45 pounds then upcast catapult and drop concentration for a whopping 74d8 bludgeoning damage((360 pounds - the first 5 pounds) / 5 pounds gives us 71d8s assuming each 5 pounds ads 1d8 just like the spell does and then you add in the 3d8 from the base damage for a total of 74d8)

3.5 got shrink item spell. It reduces objects to 1/12 times its original size, And returns said object to original size on a hard impact. Had a large cauldron Full of boiling water to throw at enemies. Devastating.

10 pouches of blasting powder tied around a bottle of alchemist’s fire + catapult. “The hardest part is cleaning up afterwards.”

Dungeon delving in the Underdark. Manage to sneak into a room with a dwarf guard, a snoozing two-headed guard dog, and some cultists busy with a ritual. I ask what's in the room that I can catapult as a divination wizard. Get told about a kettle in the corner with an angle on anything, and the only angle with two targets is the guard then the dog. The last few two-headed things were... not mentally sane. I decide that the dog and guard in-fighting is ideal while we take down the cultists quick, so I launch the kettle that way. When the guard is up for rolling dex, I say in dwarven "Duck!" and give him a high portent to force it to hit the dog thanks to it being asleep. As I hoped, the dog turns on the guard. By the time we are mostly done with the cultists, the guard or dog (can't remember the winner) just finishes their fight and is in no condition to fight us.

Make your own Fireball: Flask of Oil (5 fire per turn) + Alcheminst Fire (1d4 fire) + Powder (3d6 bludgeoning) Using proficiency of alchemist tools from artificer, and maybe mending cantrip to 'fuse' the glass from the vials into a single thing shaped as a missile

Just say your are breaking and fixing the glass in a small and precise portion

Ammunition ideas not already mentioned... dust of sneezing and choking, condensed beads of water from dust of dryness (2,625 cu. ft. of water at 8 lbs/gal is lot to get hit with when that busrts!), the classic head of the enemy to demoralize their comrades, a dinner plate upon which stands the reduced size Gnome artificer with Feather Fall. The list goes on. 🤓

My favorite use of the Catapult spell was my Artificer. We had a round to prepare for an almost guaranteed dragon attack. So I used heat metal on a cannonball and held my action to cast catapult on now heated cannon ball. It hit. Did all the catapult damage and the heat metal damage as well

Launch it at your target, you're either going to burn a creature or whatever is behind it, after you deal solid bludgeoning damage to the target. You could do the same with spears or javelins if you're feeling spicy. (Shame that Catapult doesn't adjust the damage based on appropriate damage for the launched object.)

Funny, currently playing a Wretched Bloodline, Sorcerer from Grim Hollow who has Catapult and it is flavored as bad luck. So a branch from a tree swings down hitting a rock at the target, a dagger is flung at a target that was hit by a rake someone stepped on, a bucket was kicked by a mule, etc. etc.

Used that spell as my Goliath Wizard to solve physical puzzles in a dungeon our GM put before us. "Do you need to roll to hit?" "No, a target in the way of the trajectory would have to make a save...It says here it flies in a straight line 90ft in the direction I want." "*grumble* You succeed in putting the keystone into the slot on the other side of the room." :D

I have a sorcerer I like to use catapult with. quicken the catapult to send a flask of oil to an enemy with my bonus action then use my action to firebolt the target for an extra 5 damage cuz oil flasks and magic fire are kinda weird tbh.

Best sue of catapult I’ve had/seen so far was my wizard using it to glitter bomb a group of Vampires with Silver dust in CoS. I can’t help but think of this spell and the ammo being a smal jar or magic beads.

I use the catapult spell ask a super move like throw for my fighter Eldritch Knight where I will throw a spear and the DM allows me to add the weapons damaged dice and eventually my strength mod

7:18 - Silent image a crossbowman 60ft from yourself. Catapult a pre-planted bolt from the image at a guard. And then what? Sure, the guards go check the image... but you can't move it farther away, and you still need to sneak past them... in plain sight. The crowd being roughly 60ft from you, realizing the supposed attacker is an illusion (as it isn't fleeing or attacking, and they pass through it). Now they're looking around to figure out what happened, and they can easily reach you in two turns, or less, if they notice you. There had better be more to this plan for sneaking past this group... or all it did was change the starting positions for combat.

I managed to tag an enraged polar bear with a catapulted net. (More bola flavored, but net rules) Good damage, and restrained. Party fighter handled business in an almost casual fashion

Interesting question: ....assuming this hasn't already been asked, that is. Say, you're an Artificer. You use Catapult to fling....a Spear. This Spear also has the Returning Weapon Infusion on it. Now, I'm not sure how, is it that the object does the bludgeoning damage and that's all OR if the object is a weapon, like a Spear, does it deal a second instance of damage, weapon damage, as well? Like, Catapult to Bludgeoning then Spear to Piercing, OR is it just Catapult's damage? Also, would the Returning Weapon aspect kick in here?

If you launch an acid vial with catapult, the catapult spell does 3d8 bludgeoning but does it also do 2d6 acid damage? Doesn't that make a 1st level spell unbalanced? Especially if you have a character like an Artificer that can make an infinite amount of acid. Maybe that's the extent, but some of these comments about launching bag full of vials or a bundle of them are going a bit too cheese and it would never fly in most games.

the problem with spells like this is damage spells are less efficient than utility spells. I would love to use this but at level 1 I can't see me picking this over sleep.

My character Ghavhik "Slivereye" Nulakavi was a sheltered goliath artificer. The first two times he cast a spell in combat, it was catapult and it killed the target. He was a little traumatized.

When I first started playing D&D I made a clay grenade from common items like ball bearings, blasting powder or similar explosive, caltrops, and clay. I used the clay as the shell and would fire it off as with catapult. It was rather effective.

As a dm, I like to interpret anything tangible as an object, so if my player wants to reduce the size of a goblin with enlarge/reduce, they can use catapult to YEET that goblin!

One advantage of it is that it doesn't _target_ a particular creature, it just moves in a line and if it hits, it hits. If it misses, it keeps going. So you can line up multiple targets, and if it misses the first, it gets a chance to hit the second, etc.

I love to reward creativity at my table, but when the player uses the same trick over and over, it no longer feels creative. When a player has tied five bottles of acid together and casts Catapult on the bundle, that's a trick that's going to work exactly once. I'll warn them that, in the future, each vial counts as a separate object, but I'll let them have the one big exciting moment where all five vials can hit the target (assuming it fails the save). And, to emphasize that this use of Catapult was a once-in-a-lifetime fluke, I'll have them roll on the Wild Magic table (even if they're not a Sorcerer).

aight but im just gonna buy some bigger bottles... is an issue you might run into. so rather than that what i would do is decrease the effeciency. something along the lines of an additional 1d6 every time you double the amount of vials. so 1=2d6 2=3d6 4=4d6 8=5d6. the logic being that more of it being used at once leads to more of it landing on the ground from splash and drip before effectively burning.

@@samueldrunkard6129 In that case, I'd simply say that glass-making has not advanced to the point where you can make larger bottles that won't shatter spontaneously. There's a reason that they don't typically sell things in 5 gallon glass jars even today. But, really, there's nothing worse than getting into that kind of back and forth with a player. It harkens back to the kind of adversarial player vs. DM that is best left in the past. To me, part of the player/DM compact is that the DM will reward creative play by allowing the rules-as-intended to bend, so long as the player doesn't try to abuse the rules-as-written to the point where it breaks the game.

Sounds like too much work and effort in order for what 3D 8 worth of damage nah I'm much rather just use firebolt or something else or chromatic orb and you have a little bit more utility and a little bit more direct use
