Hi all. I've learned that I should have hooked up the second hose when doing my AC tests so this would perform even better if I had. When using the unit inside the van, both the back and top hoses should be attached. Thanks for all that explained this to me. The heat test used both hoses and the tent AC only used one hose as EF recommends.

Yeah, I was about to comment you were doing the test all wrong with only using one hose in the car. Would have liked to see how long it would have lasted when optimizing power as I’m considering using it in my sprinter van.

Yeah, I'm guessing that it helps with size/weight but when they've switched to LFP, the weight difference has been a few pounds at most. Maybe they will offer a LFP version or bigger battery at some point in the future. Unless you really need to compactness of the clip on battery pack, I think buying a Delta 2 or Max to power it would be a better value overall, especially if you are going to use this daily. It's cool to be able to pick it up and use it by itself but by the time you set up the hoses, adding another box and cable next to it isn't a big deal if you have the space.

Fresh air is brought in through the back where it cools the condenser and expelled out the top not through the unit . Inside air is brought through the front cooled by the evaporator and pushed out the top The front and back are two separate units completely just like your house heat pump

I didn't see two hoses in air conditioning mode, only in heat mode. The deduction is it constantly wastes air-conditioned room air to exhaust itself, and draws in exterior hot air to replace the lost interior cooled air.. The perfectly balanced heat mode more efficiently operates by taking in exterior air to exhaust itself. It works well in air con mode, but needs an opening(security, insects), and so could be better.

Unfortunately the heat only works if the ambient room temperature is higher than 5°c (41°f). We used a ceramic bathroom heater to kill the chill of our truck camper, and brought the temp up to 16°c (60.1°f) for the Wave 2 to work. As a AC, the Wave 2 works great. This is easy when using Delta 2 Max. MeHi from Newfoundland.

When camping using the eco flow as an Airconditioner, you can collect the condensed moisture as a water source. If you keep those filters cleaned, you can probably use the collected moisture as potable water. If you harvest the resulting heat from the exhaust, via insulated duct, you can probably use it to keep food on a stove or pot warm without burning extra wood or if you are really adventurous, you can use it to power a Sterling power generator.

To be more efficient simply use the exhaust hose by itself without the intake hose, the unit will suck air from inside the van if the doors are closed, just make sure to switch off the recirculation function on the ac panel of your vehicle, it will allow for passive air exchange since the portable ac is creating a vacuum inside your car when you take the intake hose off. The air that normally gets sucked by the hose will come into the van after passing through the cabin filter and then the ac vents on your vehicle (yes even when the car is off) , this is why you feel air coming in when you drive while the recirculation button is turned off on the vehicle's ac panel. NOTE: The portable ac unit will also be more efficient as the air in recirculation is effectively colder than the ambient temperature outside making the heat exchange process more efficient.

To get the delta t of an ac you dont measure the exhaust from the compressor. You measure the temp at going into the return and the temp coming out. You should get a 20 degree difference. Ideally you want the temp coming out to be 15-20 degrees your desired temp in the room.

They need to improve specs for cold climates. The spec sheet for this model puts minimum operating temperature at 41F. Stuff like this would really help people that rent, but I don't understand why refrigerator technology costs $1000 today with an aluminum radiator, copper tubing, variable speed compressor, and reversing valve.

Todd. I've been looking at battery powered AC units for my little trailer. Having installed a mini split in the house I'm very happy with the tech, which separates compression and expansion to TWO air supplies: inside and out. Which means I think you missed a point in your van and tent air-conditioning testing. I'd like to suggest you re-test by recognizing that you want to cool conditioned air. That should cool the spaces faster and extend battery life. You should ALWAYTS use both tubes. Either off the back to vent air to the outside or off the front to circulate air to the inside. With the tent you were sucking in outside cooling it and sending it into the tent. But that also caused positive pressure in the tent which would have been forcing cooled air out of the tent. You should have used both tubes for AC. One tune for the front upper vents cooled air (as you did), and the other on the front grill to take cooled air from inside the tent to further cool it. You made a similar mistake in your van. You vented the hot air out of your van but should have used the second tube on the back of the WAVE 2 so that the air you were using for compression side of the cycle was coming from the outside. Instead you were using cooled van air. Which meant hot exterior air had to replace the air you were sending out of the van. I'd suggest you try again with both tubes. You'll likely get a little more run time.

Todd, I love the data! Thanks. I notice EcoWave has blitzed the market just at the advent of cooling season. I want to know the how this will perform in heating mode, specifically as the temperature drops - like in the 20's and below. Will this thing do a defrost cycle to clear ice off the outdoor coil ? I really would like to see a graph or table of it's heat output vs outdoor temp. This thing approaches a gap in the market for a heat pump for small RV/campers. I would like to see some folks doing a semi installed application to a camper/sprinter application. I hope EcoWave is offering some 3D printer files for adaptors folks would need. And yes, requiring the one purchase the dedicated battery for DC use is a bummer in that most/ all semi installed users would have bought their own DC systems. A couple of other thoughts: Whether using the supplied ducts or a custom duct system (in a committed install) the larger. shorter, and better insulated the better. Where the ducts come out one needs to prevent the outflow from being pulled back in the inlet. On the inside, particularly as the space gets larger, using the outlet duct to move the outlet(s) away from the inlet would improve function. In designing an install one should consider three factors 1) don't force the unit to heat/cool the whole space all the time. If sleeping, one only needs conditioning where the bed is - consider having a diverter valve in the duct to move between day and night. Second is let gravity work for you when possible. In cooling mode for instance, don't jet the outlet against the ceiling, let it "pool out" (like filling a swimming pool) up to the hight needed to cool occupants. Third, is Insulation is a multiplier,. controlling inside/outside ventilation ( even, and maybe especially in a tent) direct insulation, window covers, awnings, etc. greatly improve the ability of such a unit. Keep up the good work you do, Todd :-)

For car camping I really only need something I can use at night and recharge during the day when I'm off grid. I can run the ac during the day when if im in the car. I don't even think I'd need it to run constantly at night since my vehicle is pretty small. Ideally I'd like there to be a way to a way to cycle it on and off so it could keep things pretty cool all night. Ultimately though I think the real solution to staying cool while car camping at least, is having an electric car that you can run the ac in all night long, at least in Louisiana.

This is the best review I've watched. Thank you for taking the time to show the different scenarios and its relevant performance. I have a house lithium (206AH) in the cabin of my jeep. Can you hook up to a non-branded external battery easily? Seems like i have to chop the cable off unless thwy comw with special ones to connect directly to the battery. I noticed that you had the unit outside the tent. I was thinking of using this for a festival with extremely dusty situation this summer and my rooftop tent and am considerinf wherhwr to house the unit inside the rooftop tent or inside cabin and run the hose up top. Advice? Lastly, does it have a thermostat function?
@todd.parker
@todd.parker Жыл бұрын
Thanks! You can't just hack a cable because there are communication ports in play. The cheapest way to go is to skip the clip on battery and buy a Delta 2 because you can hook up external batteries via the solar/DC input to trickle charge that while it powers the Wave. I think this should work with a RTT but you'll need to keep it level and may need to have it off the ground so the hoses reach. As you saw in my tests, tents get super hot so runtimes are around 2-3 hours but if you just used this in the evening, might perform better than the middle of the day like I tried. It has a thermostat, well, a temperature setting. It doesn't have a remote sensor so it's not very accurate if it's outside the thing it's heating/cooling

It will do weird things like continue to cycle on/off at intervals, even when the temp is 5+ degrees beyond the set temp when cooling (or 5 + above) when heating. After 800 cycles the battery will still have 80% of its capacity so it won’t be dead, just “smaller”. It’s the same kind of battery and your smart phone and you can see after about three years how it really loses a decent amount of runtime. Anyway, it needs a battery and can’t be run directly off solar because it needs a lot of power and cloud passing would mess it up. But here's the thing: when it comes to outdoor ACs, portability is a major deal, folks! And that's where Wave 2 missed the mark for me. If it's meant for outdoor use, shouldn't it be even smaller and more portable than Mark 2? I mean, c'mon, when you're out camping with your trusty tent, you want something that's easy to lug around! Having both the Zero Breeze Mark2 and Wave1 in my possession, I have thoroughly assessed their performance and, based on the video I watched, I firmly believe that the Mark2 remains the most suitable option for my outdoor activities. Regrettably, the Wave2 model has limitations in terms of power source compatibility, as it exclusively relies on Ecoflow's proprietary battery and power storage system. This restriction proves to be quite frustrating as it prevents me from utilizing power storage and battery systems from other brands that I own. Additionally, the connection cable between the air conditioner and the battery is noticeably unwieldy and easily misplaced, unlike the ZB Mark2, which can be conveniently positioned between the front seats. Moreover, I am well-informed about the quality concerns associated with the Wave1, including fan axle breakage and display failures, which understandably worry users. The unpredictability of when these issues might arise adds to the overall concern. Unfortunately, Ecoflow has not shared any specific information about the measures taken to address these problems with the Wave2 during this period. Hence, I find myself unsure whether the Wave2 has truly rectified these issues or not.

Thanks for the detailed comment. I don’t have the Wave 1 but I can see how that’s concerning. I do know this is a complete redesign so I’d think they would have addressed earlier flaws and feedback to avoid needing to service the system units but there could be new things they got wrong. Time will tell but so far mine has been rock solid

I agree with the power source compatability issues and the ecoflow's proprietary battery; it is kinda frustrating. However, i'm pretty sure some electrical engineer out there will hack this soon so that it will no longer an issue (i'd do it myself but my expertise is in mechanical engineering). Also, from my research, the ecoflow wave 2 puts out much more btu's than the competitors... it also has the capability to heat (as well as cool). I received my ecoflow wave 2 yesterday and still assessing everything.

The proprietary power supply is a deal breaker for me! I have over 600 amp hours available in my camper van and the only way I could use it is through an inverter? Horribly inefficient as the inverter uses 60 watts of power by itself. This is one guy who is not buying into the greed and a proprietary system.

Ah, technically you should be pulling in fresh air into the back like I showed with the AC test but in the van, I wanted to try pulling the already cooled air from the car back in, sort of like your the recycle mode on your car's AC. I'm still unsure which is best.

nice product when you need to work to a remote location and need a quick portable solution. outside that, the price is insane for the small performance. a tiny AC window unit is 1/10 the price of this. if you need heating, you put the AC window unit in reverse, and that is heat pump heating!

Thanks, Todd. It's a great video. However, I won't recommend the Wave 2. My friend received her product, and unfortunately, it's nowhere near what's being claimed. She intended to use it to keep her dogs cool in the van while she goes shopping on hot days (for about 30 minutes to a maximum of 1 hour). However, it couldn't even maintain a cool temperature in the van for 20 minutes.

I want to see what Tesla can do with an LFP and perhaps solar as well.
@todd.parker
@todd.parker Жыл бұрын
Tesla has started using LFP from some models so as those packs wear down, I'm guessing they will re-package them into a Powerwall but since LFP has a 5x longer lifespan, might be a while for them to hit that point. Powerwalls are just a way to recycle old car packs that have lost a decent chunk of their usable capacity.

With a weight of nearly 50lbs when connected to the battery, Wave2 is not portable at all for outdoor use. Therefore, I don't consider it a truly portable air conditioner. Seeing in the video that the battery cannot be charged separately adds to its bulkiness. Clearly, Wave2 is not the best choice for an outdoor air conditioner. Why would someone spend almost $2000 on an air conditioner that cannot be conveniently used on the go? Regarding Wave2, I am aware of issues like inadequate cooling and water leakage. Wave2 is a very expensive product, and I often see people sharing and asking about these problems. I'm not sure if Ecoflow has truly resolved these issues, but if they haven't, it would make me feel that the money spent on it is not worth it at all.

If you’ve never used an air filter these are great. kzfaq.infoUgkx_dppjvjF8BYEmPSDTcgCUdRsgWYLXNHN I ended up with three after starting out with one. The noise level depends on the 1-3 settings with how hard you want the machine to work. You can also upgrade the filters and get one better for pet hair and smells which is a must have in my home. I noticed the air seemed lighter and easier to breathe when running the machine for the first time. Works great every time. Highly recommended!

I lol at the fact that all the promotional photos show no hoses and a nice compact looking unit yet when you buy one and go to plug it in you end up with 3 massive hoses and a giant mess. Misadvertising at it's best! It looks like a good efficient unit, my only gripe is why can it not heat or cool whilst it's charging? That doesnt make any sense!
@todd.parker
@todd.parker Жыл бұрын
Yeah, most portable ACs do the same thing but the reality is there are a bunch of hoses so I wanted to really show that. To be clear, it will heat and cool when charging from solar IF there is a the add-on battery or a Delta power station - that's needed because solar alone isn't enough power to run this so the battery is there to help buffer and provide extra juice.

It runs on DC power but not 12v. The EF batteries or Delta power stations are a 48v system which is much more efficient than 12v. I think the best best is to skip the snap in battery and get a Delta 2 Max

@todd.parker
@todd.parker Жыл бұрын
A battery is always needed to run something on solar, it would cause a lot of wear and tear on the compressor if it lost power with every cloud passing. You can use any Delta power station and I say that’s a better value but it can’t use a basic 12v battery, it needs 48v which would be tricky for an average person to put together. To be clear, 45db is the noise level but the ambient sound level was around 35db so this was about as quiet as a fan which is very good.
