When the Tokyo Summer Games were cancelled in 2020, I was very upset because as a resident of this city, many of us had been looking forward to the seeing our Tokyo shine on the world stage and the greatest hosts ever.
One year later, in a situation many consider to be worse than a year before, the city and the IOC went ahead to plan the world's biggest sporting event in the most challenging situation possible.
For residents of the host city, what would be left to experience since spectators to venues were banned, events canceled, the city in a state of emergency. This is my experience as a resident living through the Tokyo 2020 in 2021.

Thank you for watching this mini documentary! So many people wanted to come to Tokyo to see these Olympic games but the unfortunate global situation kept all visitors away. This episode was made for those who couldn't visit and I wanted to mark this period of time to look back on how Tokyo was like when hosting these games. I know it won't be a popular video, I think many are tired of the Olympics, but I feel like any host city's history is marked when these games come, for better or worse. Thank you again for watching! I love the Olympics and Japan, and I watched hundreds of hours of Olympic Coverage this year. Thank you for giving us a glimpse of what Tokyo was like outside of the venue's during the games John. You say it won't be popular, but it is honestly one of my favorite videos you have ever done!

Thank you so much for making this video. I'm an Olympics borderline-addict and really appreciated seeing this. I also might try to add climbing Mount Takao to our next trip. In general I hope that you keep making important videos whether or not you feel that they'll be popular. We're in Boston trying to spread the word that your videos rock. Cheers!

Thank you John for your great video! Although I live in Tokyo, I didn't really feel being involved in Tokyo Olympics. Whenever I watch the games, I was like "are the game going on quite close to my place..?" But as I see you filming at the places I am familiar of, I can see they were actually held! Your video can let foreign people have better understanding of this Tokyo Olympics. Great documentary!😆💕

Mount Takao is proof that even in an urban place like Tokyo, one can find natural peace and quiet. And the cicadas singing the song of their people 😂 Climbing a mountain just to get footage of the Olympic Rings is mad lad dedication that I respect. An honorary Olympian in our books. Pretty cool the Takaotozan funicular was Olympic-themed too. Out of the two mascots, the Paralympic mascot Someity is my favorite. She's too cute to resist.

From my 2000 Sydney Olympics recollections, there was a veritable mountain of merchandise for sale months after the Games were held. With stock still available well into 2001. With no international spectators, and, perhaps a subdued Japanese public domestic response to the Olympics, due to pandemic and opposition from some quarters, there may very well be an unsold large stockpile of merchandise in circulation for the foreseeable future.

Great video the bus shots with the athletes was at first funny seeing the legs but uplifting with the local with the sign so inspiriting for him to do that, also getting to see the other half of the climb to the view was cool, that cable car Takaotozan funicular ride needs to be a video one day just a recording of the whole ride down! its not all about the big railway companies a lot of smaller ones have great stories and travel rides. The part with Kanae and Leo was so cute and adorable...dare i say Kawaii lol❤
