As a “forever fan” of the “the fundamentally fabulous and the flabbergastingly (?) fantastic Finrod Felagund” I approve of your alliteration. It provided needed distraction from my despair of Beleg’s impending doom (I tried to create my own alliteration with distraction, despair and doom, but it is 5 am in California and my brain is still sleeping … ). As usual, you provided stunningly superb storytelling, Rainbow Dave!

You know, when you read the Silmarillion version of this chapter it seems as if Túrin and his followers did not exceed 50 people and neither that they ever effectively controlled land beyond their headquarters. Really pleased to learn that Túrin´s efforts at this stage of his life proved quite fruitful (for a time) in the standalone novel version, thank you Dave : )

I personally like the footnote version of Mîm’s betrayal story the best. It’s a middle ground between the telling of him straight up betraying the Gaurwaith and being captured by Orcs. It also makes sense with his character; being wrathful from the death of his son and not wanting harm to come to his last living son, and also why he’d choose his so over the lives of those that he has a vendetta against. Also since his curse on Andróg essentially and seemingly failed, this is a way to get his revenge and bring the curse on Andróg’s life to fruition.

Morgoth’s “ring” is the whole planet Earth itself, not just Beleriand. Ironically Fëanor’s rebellion against the gods kept Morgoth’s attention and energy focused on the northwest, preventing his ultimate highjacking of Arda from out under the Valar’s feet.

I have been listening to the children of hurin read by Christopher Lee. I have also been reading the silmarillion for many years but that's reading and listening to a powerful and tragic story. We all use our imagination when hearing the children of hurin but it's great to listen to you breaking it down my friend. It's always important when reading this kind of tale to hear someone else's perspective. You have done this one very well Dave. Plus I have always liked Androg. His redemption at his death is often overlooked. 🙂🙂🙂🙂

Agreed. Loving your work Rainbow Dave!!! That said, If you love this story having seen only the movies; wait until you read the books. I have read a lot of Tolkien's Middle Earth story; and I am in love with Middle Earth. But I probably have at least as much as I've already read, left to read. No single author has EVER created such a deep, complex world as this. Groups of authors have created other complex fantastical or mythical worlds; but, as I said, no ONE person has devoted as much time and effort to their creation as has Tolkien. Not Martin, not Lewis, not Rowling. Sorry to ramble; but,I SWEAR, if the movies impressed you, you will love reading the books. Peace and love.

Just fantastic storytelling and, yes, story crafting. Of course this is Tolkien’s work, but what parts you share, in what order, with which tangents and backstories and foreshadows, are what make your works so fantastic. Now that I’ve watched all of your previous works, whenever you drop a new video I find a period of uninterruptible time to ensure I get the full experience. The last 15 minutes of this episode were not just epic, but a near perfect cliff hanger given the steep walls of the summit! Mim: Goes to gather roots. Son is captured. Mim’s hatred for Androg, Beleg and the Orcs gets mixed up, since his love for his sons guides him. He gets the orcs to release him and his son with his promises, returns to “collect roots” at a later date with an intent toward betrayal, and the rest happens as stated. Ibun’s death is an interesting scenario to speculate about.

What an awesome tale the children of Hurin is. And your mastery to tale it providing profund context allows me to revisit this tale once again with new knowledge and perspective. As I watched your video its clear that Tolkien warns his audience of two proverbial advises 1. Hate is always safe destructive. 2. Failure to unite against the true evil is what allowed Melkor to inflict so much pain and sorrow to all the peoples of middle earth. One can even argue that even the wisdom of Melian the Maiar fails to promote the union of all peoples against Melkor. A lesson that Gandalf brings to absolute relevance in the 3rd age. Thanks for this amazing series RD!

@@mihajlo7835 thanks! And you’re absolutely right, Tolkien definitely did state that the First Age is the longest. But the calendar can be confusing, in that Year 1 of the First Age is only about 590 years before the very end of the First Age. But as you know there’s an awful lot of First Age that happened before the Year 1.
@Enerdhil
@Enerdhil Жыл бұрын
The first Age was the first time the Valar started counting time. Who knows how long it was from the time the Valar appeared and the Awakening of the Elves. Another point. The Nature of Middle Earth tells us that each Valarian year is much longer than we all had assumed based on all the other published writings. Galadriel might even be close to 19000 years old. Personally, I like the smaller number for converting those years to lunar or solar years.

The last stand of the Gaurwaith amidst the red flowers on the hill, and everything that happened there . . . the friendship, the betrayal, the redemption. This is incredibly powerful. I've heard a lot of people say that Tolkien's characters and stories are black and white with nothing in between. They don't know this story.

44:36 this is one of those places where I think it is important to remember all of these stories are told *by a character in Middle Earth*. The Children of Húrin represents the story as compiled by Daeron, from Húrin's memory: Húrin is not exactly an unbiased narrator here, Mîm's treachery destroyed Túrin's life. Daeron isn't unbiased either: if nothing else, the collapse of Dor Cuarthol made Doriath less safe. But people who lived in Dor Cuarthol might well have known more about Mîm's betrayal than Húrin shared with Daeron (let's be clear, Húrin *did* know he wasn't being totally truthful but it's pretty understandable why he'd try to damn Mîm's memory). Either they survived the battle, or they were elves reborn after the War of Wrath: when Manwendil Parmaitë is compiling the Quenta Silmarillion (the latest decision by Tolkien was that this document was a Númenorean creation). Mîm himself is long since dead, so nobody can prove which version of his motivations is the full truth. The accounts are not so conflicting however, that they can't simply be chalked up to three differently biased narrators.

Andróg is kind of a proto-Boromir in that he can act and do questionable things (from our perspective) but in the end he shows the kind of man he is deep down with an epicly honorable last stand and final act of kindness. Where Boromir tells Aragorn first of "the little ones" being taken Andróg thinks "I can't save my friend but I know who can" then entrusts Beleg with the task

Beleg was for a very long time one of Thingol's marchwardens and generally top military people. The elves of Doriath were known to have formerly hunted and killed petty dwarves, Mim's people. Which comes across as quite possibly genocide even if the details of who did what to whom are a little hazy. Elves are immortal, which raises the possibility that Beleg may well have been involved in or to a large extent even in charge of the hunting of the petty dwarves on the orders of his king. In which case Mim would have a pretty solid reason to hate Beleg's guts. It's also possible that Beleg wasn't involved, but that Mim thinks he was and hates him because of it.

Hi Rainbow Dave! Just wondering what other videos you’ll be making for this Silmarillion series? How much are you going to cover? I’m very excited and hopeful to learn about the entire history of Middle Earth and Arda from you because I find your enthusiasm, opinions and genuine love for the entirety of the Legendarium contagious; I cannot listen to any other creators on this. I’m sold on your channel and videos and very soon I’ll have watched every single video! Thank you if you reply 😊

After Children of Húrin I’ll do a shorter series about the Silmaril of Doriath, and then longer one on the rise and fall of Gondolin, and then finally the Voyages of Earendil and the War of Wrath to finish off the First Age.

@@gutterpeach with enough time, I’d like to go through the entire history of Middle-earth in chronological order. All the way up to the end times. But it will probably be quite a while before I get to late Third Age things like Rohan and the Stewards of Gondor. 😊

Your materials are great Thank you for connecting dots from various sources. I disagree that the control of the land is Morgoth's ring. I thing his servants are closer to that. It was said that literally his power was lowered as he transfered it to his servants.
