First and foremost, thank you for this video! I must say, one thing that always perplexed me was about the Battle of Azanulbizar and the defense of Erebor during the War of the Ring is that the pivotal moments, if not the majority of the battles, occur outside the gates of Khazad-dum and Erebor, respectively. It always struck me as profoundly odd that for all the defenses Tolkien describes each of the Kingdoms is built to have, the majority of the pivotal battles take place beyond them. I do wonder how differently the course of Middle-Earth's history might have run had either defenders utilized their fortifications from the very outset rather than sallying out to fight the battle as a matter of course.

So the Dwarves contemplated the correct approach to this insult for seven days. Then they gathered an army for three years and began systematically eradicating every mayor Orc stronghold from north to south, only stopping when the insult was avenged in appropriate matter. Guess that's what you get when pushing introvert craftsmen too far. Dwarven proverb: If it is worth doing, it is worth doing well :D

There is a small detail about the kingdom of Dale which I have never seen commented on. Viz, in 2977 Bard's son Bain becomes King of Dale. However in 3007 Bain's son Brand becomes King in Dale. After the battle in March 3019 Brand's son Bard II is also King in Dale. Why only King in Dale, not King of Dale? My guess is that, although Dale is a kingdom, its core territory i.e. Dale itself is held as a fief from the Dwarf-king in Erebor. There is a real-world example. Frederick the Great was crowned King in Prussia, not of Prussia, because Prussia was formerly part of Poland. (King of Prussia is a common pub name in England, also providing the name of a town in Pennsylvania, but it was technically incorrect in 1759 when Frederick became popular in England by being an ally against the French). Anyway I feel this opens up some interesting backstory. Maybe Bain offended the Dwarves by his claim, but Brand was wiser, and was rewarded by the friendship of Dain.

The Dwarves had a pretty rough time of it in Tolkien's world. Mt Gundabad, sacred birthplace of Durin was a tug-o-war over the second and third Ages, with Orcs taking it, Dwarves cleansing it, only for Orcs to retake it. Khazad-Dum was taken, and due to a certain fiery Maiar remained out of their hands until the end of the Fourth Age. Erebor was taken by Smaug. Nogrod and Belegost were heavily damaged when Beleriand was destroyed. Their halls in the Grey Mountains were attacked by Cold Drakes and the population there scattered. Perhaps the only real success in Middle-Earth were the dwarves of the Iron Hills, themselves exiles. It's nice that they got thrown a bone during the fourth Age, with the retaking of Khazad-Dum, the new realm in Aglarond, and of course Erebor by this point was retaken. I'd like to think they managed to retake Mt Gundabad, but I never found any reference to it in the Fourth Age from Tolkien.

I always thought that, in both the Hobbit and LotR, the East Gates of Moria and the area outside didn't look much like the entrance to a huge and majestic palace/fortress/city of a race that loved to shape stone. It looks like an untouched mountainside, with not even a broken flagstone to suggest it the entrance to a mighty realm. I always thought the Hollin Gate was extremely small for even getting basic supplies for many thousands of folk (unless the dwarves were growing crops and raising herds within the halls of Khazad Dum?) and so the 'main' door must be much larger and easier - but that isn't what the films at least suggest. In fact - REQUEST TO TOLKIEN UNTANGLED ATCUAL - is there enough material for you to do an episode on food/meat/crop production by the races of Middle Earth? I realise it might 'rustle some jimmeys' since there was plenty of hunting, but I'd love to know how all these beautiful/sturdy/ and mannish? people fed themselves!

I'd like to make a correction here. In general I expect you know far more Tolkien lore than I do, but this is one point I'm pretty sure of. When there is an accent over one of a pair of vowels in Tolkien's languages, as in the Dwarvish names Dáin and Thráin, as well as Elvish names like Eärendil, it means the two vowels are in different syllables. Thus, the pronunciation of those names would be [DAH-een], [THRA-een], and [ey-ah-REN-dil]. Tolkien has a pronunciation guide in one of the LotR appendices, so -- unless he changed the pronunciations at some point -- this would be how he intended the names to be pronounced. In fact, up till some time in the late 20th century, this was true in English as well. It shows up in words like coöperate and reëlect, and this would have been standard practice in Tolkien's era.

The main campaign of LOTR: The Battle for Middle Earth 2 followed the War in the North. Although the game took a lot of liberties with the source material in regards to some of the heroes and units, the Battle of Dale was my favorite part.

As Ive been informed, a Balrog is really a Maiar, that has "shifted" into the form of a Balrog, inspired by their support of Melkor. What I have been wondering is: is there any lore, that suggests, whether or not, a Balrog can regain its Maiar-form? (whatever that is!)

The armies at erebor and dol guldor wouldn’t have been able to get to Mina’s Tirith before the ring was destroyed, and so Aragorn and co would still be around to draw out Sauron’s army It would takes weeks to get from erebor to Mina’s Tirith, even at a good pace

You can really see the inspiration Tolkien took from European Jews for dwarves when you list their calamities, after their early zenith it was disaster after disaster that they still managed to come back from to thrive in their new homes.

When you refer to their age by ‘dwarves standards’ I think that’s the incorrect way to look at it. Your scaling their ageing process to ours. Suggesting that their physical ageing is slowed therefore there mental ageing is as well. A 20yr old dwarf could have all the same physical and mental abilities as anyone that’s lived that long. And some 20yr olds can do some mind blowing shit.

No, no, let's throw all the proper shade at the Hobbit movies! Jackson jumped the shark with these. More seriously, for me Smaug is (arguably) Tolkein's weakest character. As in most fantasy stories, dragons are absurdities. They make no sense. Why do you conquer? Power, wealth, women. Smaug has no interest in power. He makes no attempt to rule the men of Dale, for example. Why does he conquer the Lonely Mountain? The reason to seize treasure is to spend it. What's he going to spend it on? He doesn't appear to even need to eat. So *why* do it? As for females, there don't seem to be any female dragons... In other words, there's no legit motivations for Smaug. And the ease with which he's killed makes him something very rare, if not unique, in Tolkein's work - a plot device.

This video was too long. Halfway through it, I got hungry so I left it playing and went to the kitchen to fix myself a sandwich. But then I found out that I'm out of mayonnaise so I went to a store. There, I saw the most beautiful woman I have ever seen in my whole life. But I'm a really shy person so I took up a three-year personality development course so I could introduce myself. She was very friendly and all, but unfortunately, she had a boyfriend. So I said, all good, I'm a mature person. I wanted the best for her and I harbored no illusion that I am the best person for her and she seemed happy with her boyfriend, so I didn't bother her anymore. But we kept in touch and we became friends and I got over my crush on her. Then she broke up with her boyfriend, we drank some alcohol because of it. I told her she'll be fine and I wished her well. I still think she's the most beautiful woman in the world, but like I said, I am over my crush on her. It was like five years already since I first saw her. Besides, I am quite happy with the friendship I developed with her. It was more important than a crush. So we kept hanging out, drinking, having coffee, and all. I had a girlfriend, she started dating other guys. My girlfriend wanted to live some other life without me in it, so I said, "Okay, I want the best for you and I want you to pursue your happiness." My lady friend and I drank alcohol about it, and she gave me the same advice I gave her when she was in that position and I became okay with the breakup immediately. But we were really drunk, so she spent the night in my apartment. I only have one bed, so you know what that means: She took the bed and I slept on the couch. But on the couch, I really can't sleep. Something was bothering me. So I tossed and turned for about three hours, then I finally couldn''t take it anymore, I stood up and went straight to my room where she's sleeping. I approached the bed, gently sat on it and I reached for her shoulder to pull her closer to me. She stirred and woke up. She asked what's up. I told her, "you know, the first time I saw you, I was watching a video and left it playing to get myself a sandwich then went to the store to get some mayo then I got so distracted by life that I forgot to finish the video." She said, "You know what, I've been wondering about a weird noise in your night drawer." So we opened that drawer, and lo and behold, there's my phone and this video still has two minutes of play time on it.
