I couldn't agree more. Back in 1989 I was right in the middle of a dark time in my life and Tom's album "FULL MOON FEVER" got me thru it, as silly as that sounds. Started listenin' to Tom in 1979 as a boy and ain't stopped yet. Such a sad fact that he's gone and we have all these ass clowns who call themselves musicians on top of the charts now.

The best version was when he was seriously pissed off, which he was at Stan Lynch they are too happy here .... like my sis when she got sober 20 yrs ago and went to Dublin with her new hubby and was so disappointed because at an Irish AA meeting .... they were too happy.!!!!!! True story.

This song was actually about Stan Lynch and the band letting him down and Tom's sheer exuberance camoflaged all that. I don't whether to laugh or cry it's amazing.

Evelyn baron - quote from Tom Petty He also added about its meaning, “The song was actually inspired by Wilson Pickett’s ‘Land of a Thousand Dances.’ It’s almost the same riff, but with a different beat. I wanted a track like Wilson Pickett. Of course, it came out sounding nothing like Wilson Pickett, but it’s a pretty good song” Sorry.

The song that introduced me to Tom Petty back around 1978. First time I was ever aware of him. Somehow, I had missed American Girl, which came out before this. I remember this song knocked me out when I first heard it but little did I know just how significant this artist was going to be over the next 40 years.

Rip Tom...saw him on his last tour. He cancelled at the last minute, due to laryngitis so they said. He rescheduled his concert a week later, finished his last concert at the Hollywood bowl. He passed after that. He was true to his fans to the end. So privileged to have seen him before he passed.

babe buzz- IF, Petty said he had Laryngitis? Then that's what he had. I find it very annoying that YOU are insinuating he was "Drugged-Out". 1st. he kicked his Heroin Addiction 25 yrs ago. 2nd MY ORTHOPEDIC SURGEON SAID:"Tom Petty, WAS in a tremendous amount of PAIN, on his last Tour." (my Ortho Surgeon, is 1 of the BEST in Colorado, he is the head Surgeon for 'The Olympic Center", in Colorado Springs) LAST, but not least. Tom Petty, put on some great Concerts while having a MAJOR Fracture in his HIP. Most people, (including YOU, & ME would have been sitting in a Hospital), Consider yourself extremely lucky to have seen 1 of TOM PETTY'S LAST PERFORMANCES.
@babebuzz51015 жыл бұрын
@@patriciawright8786 I never insinuated any such thing. I simply implied, he probably wasn't feeling well maybe because of his up coming illness. If he had laryngitis, he couldn't of rescheduled his concert within a week of cancelling his concert. He wouldn't be able to talk or sing for sometime. But continued his tour for his fans no matter how he felt. Your harsh statement dosen't bother me, its actually amusing.☺ Oh and btw, I love this man, and VERY privileged to have seen him in concert for one last time.
@michele21auntiem4 жыл бұрын
@@babebuzz5101 Just wanted to say that laryngitis is often treated by ENT with shot of antibiotics and steroid injection (for singers and performers like Tom). Now if you or i got it that wouldnt be the case. But i worked as a speech pathologist for 18 years. I think you were blessed to get to see him. But what the other person is trying to say is dont assume it was something else. He worked that entire tour with the hip fracture. It was diagnosed before tour started. So you got to see a man standing and walking, giving his all with a broken hip. As did everyone who saw him on his last tour. I just wish the doctor would have treated him like every other patient and put him in hospital for hip repair. The combo of meds he was on and the severity of his pain killed him. He did that for his fans. I would add that i never got to see him perform so you were lucky to have done that. Blessings to all of his fans.

Saw him at the Santa Monica Civic around 1977, think he did about 4-5 encores, gave people there money 's worth. ( Even though in those days, tickets for live shows weren't that much). Remember reading somewhere that during the filming of the No Nukes concert at Madison Square garden in 1979, Tom Petty didn't want to be shown. He did a song called "Cry to me" by Solomon Burke. It's on the album, not in the film. A Blistering version his was. RIP Tom. One of that last original American Rockers

I LOVE this video of early live music from the Heartbreakers; I know Tom Petty was justifiably annoyed when people thought he was writing autobiographically, but this song presages the Trouble With Stan Lynch and at the period when this performance happened, it is likely that Stan was causing trouble which was probably messing with Tom's head but the sheer exuberance of the performance cancels all that out. Total brilliance! And to the comments re; addiction, get real. He fucking fell on his sword for his audience man; his hip fracture happened after ticket sales went on for 40th anniversary tour, which I was lucky to catch in July 2017 and yes he was moving slowly and it was like him stoically not to tell everyone about his problems and surgery was booked for 2 days before he died. He wasn't a god or an inspired hedonist; taken for all in all, he was a man, to quote Shakespeare badly, whom he thought inferior to Bob Dylan, gotta love this amazing guy who more than ever during Covid period is a great inspiration.
