Arguably, three of the most influential artists in rock. As a fan, my favorite thing about Rush is that they are goofy and have always poked fun at themselves, but they always took their music serious and their drive to become better at their craft was never hindered by chicks, sex or drugs. Every performance, they give 100, along with their crew. There is just mad respect all around, including us fans. Rush went where they wanted to go.... never driven by mainstream anything. Label says they want a radio friendly song, they respond woth the 20 min 38 sec masterpiece, 2112. Theyve always played what inspired them. Regardless of fans or labels. They managed to remain the closest of friends and it shows in their live performances. I'd recommend Woeking Man Live in Cleveland. Great classic rock song, their breakout song in the US and this version is from 2011 tour. Best band ever. RIP Professor. not a day goes by that I am not appreciative to be alive in a time that permitted me to see these guys live. so lucky.

The band member not mentioned is Alex Lifeson, for me he rates as a top ten guitarist of all time. Just wanted to show a little love for Alex. Tom Sawyer is based on a character created by Mark Twain. The poem you referred to became the song Xanadu. Otherwise I enjoyed your reaction and breakdown. Rush is a very deep rabbit hole and I look forward to more reactions.

I have been a professional drummer for many years and have played a few Rush covers along the way. Tom Sawyer was the first song I learned to play when I was 15 years old. I learned most of Neil 's drum parts note for note and I will explain brjefly why this song is such a bitch for even the best of us..First reason is that those 16ths are being hammered out with one hand on a CLOSED high-hat, which is a perfect recipe for destroying one's wrist joints, Secondly, yes the time signatures are tricky at first, but Neil has a way of leading us through without alienating the listener. The complexity and the changes are actually what is easiest about Neal's work. What makes his drumming so difficult is that he hits so damn hard when he cascades around that kit. HARD and precise. The solo section is where he starts skipping into double into double time 7/8, but it is only a one half measure tease at first, then as the solo builds, he really takes off into those legendary fills. It is coming out of all of this, when he goes back to hammering those 16ths again AND adding crazy variations after 'But Change is...' This is by far the most excruciating moment in the whole song, because we just tore everthing up during the solo and now we must hammer the ride bell hard and fast leading up to the final sprint towards the finish line. This song is a whole workshop for drums, every time I play it I barely survive!! LOL...

your anaylsis is on point. For budding drummers in their teens or beyond this drum chart is a must to wrap one's head around. In HS I was in drumline so luckily we were naturally Rush fans *because* our entire training was to be able to drum hard, dynamically, and precise... all the elements of Neil's drumset drumming.

RUSH is THE PERFECT EXAMPLE of the fluidity of MASTERING TIME SIGNATURES! I play drums and there are a few things that you need to know about Neil Peart’s ( pronounced PEER-T) character: First he writes the lyrics so he knows in advance what TYPE of song it’s meant to be ie ballad, driver, etc. Second he COMPOSES on the drums… like a carpenter who looks at a set of blueprints before building the object. Neil lays out a SKETCH in his mind of the VOICES of the drumset and builds the song from there. He is also a great LISTENER knowing when NOT to step over Geddy’s singing or Alex’s solos! Finally, he had perfect timing and fluidity of time changes. He said himself that it’s not about COUNTING the time signatures as much as fluid motion to change the tempo without counting: in other words it should FLOW! He hates repeating the same drum patterns in the same song meaning if he plays a fill one way the first time around he will play it differently the second time around. IE. Rolls down the toms the first time around and triplets or quads (all four limbs) the second time around. In short there will NEVER be another like him on planet earth 🌍 🌏 🌎! REST IN PEACE PROFESSOR! With heart felt admiration and sincerity! Gary

I just thought of something in examining the Professor’s last name: the first that caught my eye 👁 was ART- artist, artistic expression in both music and lyrical content. Second: PE as in physical education as in the Stamina it takes to play drums and in particular at a EXCEEDINGLY HIGH LEVEL!!! So we can deduce through his last name that we have an ARTIST in every sense of the word and Physical Education in terms of stamina and physicality to play at level that boggles the mind and soothes the Heart! Rest In Peace Professor there will never be another like you! Sincerely, Gary

Rush's career spanned from 1968-2015. They are considered to be the forefathers of progressive rock, along with (and also influenced by) Led Zeppelin and Yes, for a start. They are masters of time and transition, frequently working in odd time signatures like 13/8, or multiple compound time signatures. Tom Sawyer is the most popular song off their most popular album, 1981's "Moving Pictures". It is their most-played song on the radio, and one of Neil's favorites to play. Drummer Neil Peart (say "peert" not "pert") passed away from brain cancer in January 2020. He was "your favorite drummer's favorite drummer". He was also the principal lyricist for the group. Neil influenced generations of drummers, notably Danny Carey of Tool and Mike Portnoy (formerly) of Dream Theater. Geddy Lee plays bass, sings lead vocals, and plays keyboards. He also has a bank of organ pedals that can play bass tones when his hands are on the keyboard, or synth tones when his hands are on the bass. Alex Lifeson is the most under-appreciated guitarist in rock. His innovative solos range from soulful to face-melting.

Mahalo Nui Loa❤Oh by the by...you are most definitely missing out on the FULLNESS OF THIS ROCK GOSPEL without tapping into LIVE RUSH PERFORMANCES my friends, you must see the mastery for yourself...album covers( though most kick ass for the ,70's-80's Golden Age of Rockdom) just wont suffice for these Maple Leafs!!! As a lifelong fan of Rush since 2112, many has spoken about "Professor" Neil Peart. Neil started playing drums at Conservatory of Music. He took lessons there. Reason for his famous name given by the fans of Rush, "Professor" is that Neil is the main lyricist for Rush in other words, he wrote majority of their songs. Plus, Neil never stopped learning! He learned drumming styles such as Jazz. One main influence for Neil was legendary drummer, Buddy Rich even though there were mainly influences from Rock like John Bonham of Led Zeppelin. Both of you can watch some of the styles in his famous drum solo in Frankfurt, Germany. I have seen Neil live in concert when Rush was on their Time Machine tour back in 2010.

The INSTANT the stylus contacted vinyl I was hooked for life. Saw them in January 1977 & February 1980. '77 show I was front row center arms on stage. In the 70's ALL arena shows were general admission. It was a matter of how badly did you want the best seat/location in the house? EVERY show I saw in the 70's sans one I was front row center. I'm 61 and have seen THOUSANDS of shows in 50 years and to this day the 1977 ALL THE WORLD'S A STAGE show remains the best experience in my life. And BTW Neil Peart is the GREATEST drummer of all time. Do some research on him and you'll soon see what I mean. Keep up the good work!

Alex is playing a double neck 12string on top 6string on bottom along with his array of foot pedals Geddy is playing a double neck bass on top 6string on bottom. Also playing keyboard and pedals for keyboard and singing . And it actually sounds better than the studio track.

A great example is the clip below at the 2:00 minute mark of Xanadu from their official R30 footage in Frankfurt. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jN6mmdic2cuRYGw.html You get a brief glimpse of a sweet overhead view of Geddy playing a pretty difficult pattern with his right foot. Enjoy and thanks for reacting to the best live rock band ever imho.

To pronounce the drummer's name correctly simply put a "P" & a "T" on the front and back end of EAR i.e. (hearing aid for your ear).

I expect that others have already corrected you on the correct pronunciation of "Peart". If not, here you go. It's not like "pert". It's like "peer" with a 't' at the the end.

Can't speak for my friend but I have been off the radiowaves for the better part of almost two decades and rock music will always be more impactful to me than rap music but then again I am a guitarist raised on classic rock and not a rapper, but love all of it and know they are different art forms that are not easily replicated by those who are the most skilled in their field.
