This week's Dreamcast File is gonna be a hot one. On this Very Special Episode, we delve into the history of the TOMB RAIDER franchise, its banal origins, it's soulless creation, its' exhaustingly sexist marketing and it's brutal developmental crunch, which led to four maddeningly samey, wildly difficult, increasingly dated games being pumped out in four back to back to back to back years, culminating in today's subject, THE LAST REVELATION, a game so uninspired its developmental team reported the only joy they had during the creation of the game was when they almost got away with killing Lara Croft off. My personal experience with THE LAST REVELATION sadly did not allow me to get past the tutorial stage, mindbogglingly enough.

I never had anything to do with the Dreamcast, but I like your short crisp and honest way of reviewing and that you include history parts in your videos. Many videos of old games are bathed in too much positive light, so it's often difficult to recognise the problems that even an experienced player can have with them.

What I take away from this review is how much our first experience with something colors our perception of it forever. Tomb Raider crawled so Prince of Persia/Assassin's Creed could run.

How can somebody get lost playing Tomb raider is beyond my undestanding. Did you get lost playing Supermario also? 😂

Tomb Raider’s classic controls are unusual, but really satisfying when you master them. Her movements feel delayed to some, but it allows for the really nice animations to play out uninterrupted. Watching her move around so gracefully is very similar to footage from early prince of Persia games. There is just something so neat about seeing characters from that time period moving so fluidly.

I've never heard anything as absurd as getting stuck on the first level of Tomb Raider games. Like, come on. It's not rocket science. Walk to the edge, hop back, run and jump and grab. This is almost on the level of that Cuphead demo, Jesus. Should probably stick to baby games made for babies.

Aww man. I'm so sorry for the horror you faced. I love the tomb raider games but they have definitely aged . If you think the last Revelation was bad, just wait until you get to Tomb Raider 5 Chronicles. Haha. That game is really, really bad. Released on the DC & PS1 long after the release of the PS2 and to make matters worse that game has really cryptic puzzles like going through doors or climbing through vents you can't see and the game expects you to know. Honestly as much as I love retro games, this series has at this generation has not aged well at all. If you want to play good Tomb Raider games I highly recommend starting with Tomb Raider 2013. Ironically that was my first PS4 game so I say play that game. 😊

@@SchmidGame Haha, I can't wait for you to start loving Tomb Raider Chronicles. But will the game love you back?. I will say though as bad Tomb Raider Chronicles is, the one thing I will give it credit for is how the game on PC has a stage creator option & as the years have gone on, people have made their own tombs & puzzles with some combing them to make them their own game in a sorts. I didn't know until long after the games release because I've stuck to the DC version for like years and it bums me to say despite a console that had a keyboard and mouse and servers it was not included on the DC release. It feels like a missed opportunity to not have it on the system. Even if the servers were shutdown today it would've been a great mode for people offline.

My Dreamcast came with a demo disk. A demo of this Tomb Raider game was on that disk, and it was pretty fun. It was a whole level. But, I had no desire to play any more than that demo. Idea for you: review the demo disks! I think there were only two on the Dreamcast.

I kinda like it. It was a bit dated at the point this was released. But I prefer it to Tomb Raider 2 & 3. I like the challenge. The port is a bit basic though. 7/10.

I strongly disagree on a lot of opinions here; as far as I’m concerned Tomb Raider 2 was an easier game, with far better graphics. The controls for Tomb Raider are perfect too; once you realise it’s not a typical platformer, and that the levels are set up to be navigated with Lara’s very deliberate movements, you can actually gauge every. Single. Jump. You eventually know from experience, and from the very rigid rules of that movement, what is and isn’t possible and are almost always guaranteed success once you do. It must be said, however, that the Dreamcast is without doubt the worst way to play any TR game. They were aged upon arrival, AND the DC gamepad is simply not suited to the commands of the game.

Yeah, it's definitely just a skill issue on my side because clearly people have beaten the games, I could just never click into the rhythms with that deliberate movement, but yeah, the Dreamcast controller was definitely worse than the PS1 in the hand. Thanks for watching! :)

Totally agree with the indictments of the Tomb Raider series here. I had a friend who preferred Tomb Raider to Resident Evil and it always was crazy to me

I’m really enjoying this series. If you’ll allow me to offer a bit of constructive criticism; less series history, more actual review. Eight and a half minutes of this thirteen minute Tomb Raider 4 review are about games that aren’t Tomb Raider 4. But I’m still enjoying the series, as I said. Also, wow you’re terrible at tomb raider, lol. You might be worse at tomb raider than I am at RPGs. And I’m bloody AWFUL at RPGs, haha.

Absolutely fair, I get a lot of really positive feedback from a lot of corners every time I do more series history, so i’ve actually tried to lean into that when I can, because people seem to enjoy that,. I try to keep that history relative to the points I’m making about the current game, but this one became a specialty case because I couldn’t get past the fucking tutorial on part four, so mentioning the history and how I struggled with those other games, and the critiques from the creators and reviewers felt appropriate to my experiences lol And yeah, the things these games were asking me to do just did not click in my mind, just a really negative experience for me lolol Thank you for watching, and I really genuinely appreciate that feedback, I love hearing all perspectives, to take into account and find those balances going forward 👍🏻

@@SchmidGame I'm of the opposite opinion - I think the history is what sets the stage for the review, there's some cool info you've presented in these that I had no idea about (especially soul reaver). It reminds me of early-era Angry Video Game Nerd where the review was secondary to the history of the company or game/console itself.
