Here is my attempt at rambling about how long the Tomb Raider: The Last Revelation is. It's obvious Core Design wanted to gout with a bang with this one.. Did they manage to do it? Well..
I rushed this one a bit, since I'm gonna go to vacation so I'll be absent for 2 weeks. This time no captions. I'll fiddle with the KZfaq captions later on for those who can't decipher my precious accent :D

I got Last Revelations for Christmas and it was my first Tomb Raider. I understand why people were a little burnt out by this point but as someone new to the franchise it was awesome. The fact that it takes forever to beat was a big bonus for someone who only got new games on my birthday and Christmas.

This game pissed me off as a kid, so I never played it again until I was older and I got stuck in the same area as I did when I was younger, the desert railroad. I've never finished it because it was just making me annoyed instead of me enjoying the game. Great video!

The Iris was in Lara's secret treasure room in TR3 - nice touch! I had mixed feelings about this game - I liked the flashback idea but not as a tutorial (bring back Croft Manor, boooooo!). I like some of the puzzle, graphic and weapon improvements, but didn't like the jumping back and forth between levels - to me, it was better when you cleared an area, found out how many kills/secrets you got and that was it. You could replay it later or leave it at that (plus I didn't get lost so often). And while Egypt was a great setting (I found the tomb and the FMV for Seth to be really creepy when I was young and the railroad level was cool), I missed the globe-trotting and the variety of levels. Love your videos!

Yes - I also love when you have a single level without any backtracking. You are here, all the necessary items are here, explore it, clear it, finish it, and that's it. Move on! Not this back and forth craziness haha. And yeah, globe trotting is also something that I like. Just for the change of scenery, at least. Thank you for the kind comment :)

From what I heard, they didn't want to kill off Lara for good in Last Revelation, because Core Design knew there was no way anyone would believe Lara would be gone forever, but they wanted to just make an excuse to stop making as many games, as the yearly release was exhausting for them. I recall they were also trying hard to make other games to do as well as Tomb Raider, so they didn't have to put all their focus onto this series, but nothing else they did caught on compared to this series. Tomb Raider suffered a similar issue to Crash Bandicoot and Spyro the Dragon at the time, of yearly releases, but I assume Crash was overall easier game to develop as they reuse level themes per game, and the last 2 games on the PS1 were of a completely different genre as they were spinoffs (last one in general wasn't even made by the original developers, as they had moved on by that point), and Spyro came out in the later half of the PS1, so it didn't have to drag itself out the whole life span of the console (however it was still said the developers felt creatively exhausted by the third game). Tomb Raider mean whiles was the same gameplay for all 5 entries, which had to come out a year within each other, so I can't blame them for wanting to take a break from the series. If you ask me, they should have been given 2 years at least to make each Tomb Raider game, instead of the 1, similar to Resident Evil 1 to Resident Evil 2 (Resident Evil 3 was made in a year, but if I'm remembering correctly, it started off as a side game that got turned into a numbered title, while Code: Veronica, a game that's honestly more plot relevant then RE3 was, was in fact released 2 years after RE2), as it might have helped with the exhaustion issues they were suffering at the time, and allowed them more time to make each game stand out from each other more.
@kristijan893
@kristijan893 10 ай бұрын
You are probably right. I didn't adress that properly. Core Design probably wanted to make a way for stopping Tomb Raider development after this game. The staff were exhausted, fatigued etc. Tomb Raider was affecting their mental health (for some of them) with these yearly sequels, so yeah. When it comes to Crash or Spyro, they are probsbly easier to develop even though their developers (Naughty Dog and Insomniac) utilized some advanced techinques to make the games look so good on PS1. That sure took some time - to learn how the PS1 works, how to allocate resources and stuff. Generally it was easier to get yearly releases of those games because they are not so big and overall complicated like most of the games nowadays. I mean, you could develop original GTA and its expansions and GTA2 within 2 or 3 years. Now look how long it takes to get from GTAV to 6 or from Red Dead Redemption 1 or 2. These are huuuge in scope. So yeah.. nice comment right there mate, appreciate it highly :D
@spyroaster5457
@spyroaster5457 5 ай бұрын
Yearly releases of games were much more common back then due to the technology resulting in games being generally smaller in scale. Tomb Raider, Crash, and Spyro seemed to be the most successful with this on PS1. Tomb Raider and Crash Bandicoot got their starts in the early days of the PS1 (1995-1997), then Spyro came along in the middle ages of the console (1998-2000). The PS1 still kept pumping games out until late 2004, with FIFA 2005 being the final game released in North America. I like to call the 2001-2004 years of the PS1 the "Wasteland Years". You also mentioned the Resident Evil games on PS1, and there was almost a 2-year gap between the 2nd and 3rd games. Resident Evil 2 was released in January 1998, while Resident Evil 3: Nemesis was released in November 1999 (US releases).

I hated as well not having the manor, and I hated even more when they showed it in Chronicles menu and wouldn't let us play it, like... it's here but... not really. I found this game way more exhausting than TR3, because like you said, some things are so cryptic you can waste days in one single puzzle, so I ended up using guides way more often than I wanted because I couldn't know if I was being stupid or if was another of those "activate sprinkles with torch" moments. Kinda ruined my experience.

Yeah. If only Core Design did a better job in pointing us players to figure out stuff, it would be much better. I don't mind a good puzzle, but some of the stuff in this game are very cryptic and without much logical sense. So yeah.. Stella's TR site is sometimes a godsend

Well yeah. Most Notable struggles where I needed to consult guides: - The Train Side Opening (okay that was really stupid of me not looking on the sides of the train to find the crowbar) - The Pipe from the Jeap (How am I supposed to know I search for a Pipe from a broken Jeap stand before it an pry it with the crowbar?) - The Northern? Key: Yes one, not colored different block you need to move among all this blocks to open the Labyrinth - The Labyrinth of said Key: maybe I was already sick of having missed the key, but the labyrinth behaved inconsistent, like lion opens and the other thing closes, except for the final room were it still opens even though you cross the wrong symbol For the Pyramid: I only accidentaly made it, as I thought I need to go to the top, but accidentally made it out sideways to the next part lol.

This is my fave Tomb Raider game along with the first one. I never cared for action (which TR2 was packed with) and TR3 was too hard. TR4 went back to exploration like the first TR game and the puzzles had improved a lot. The only thing I didn't like was the part where an area consisted of several levels you had to go back and forth with. I feel like the ambition didn't match the system capabilities with this semi open world -trial. Also, I absolutely loved the tutorial levels with teen Lara. The mansion had grown stale for me at this point after 3 games and this was the perfect way to do it imo. Having said that, I did use a cheat and skipped a level or two in the Cairo section. TR1 and TR5 are the only ones I finished without cheats.

Yeah, going back and forth through multiple levels was maybe a good idea on paper, but in reality it kinda felt short. I had a very difficult time as a kid with TR3, especially with the London levels, but when Last Revelation came out... it said "hold my beer". Holy hell. Like you said, it becomes very easy to get lost with the interconnected levels and not know wtf to do, especially the really weird moments where the game expects you to do something you've never done in any TR game. This one took me a long, long time to beat, I had no walkthroughs or internet, so at times I became so frustrated I'd put the game down for a while and just restart it from the beginning later until I came back to the place I was stuck at and figured it out. The ending being what it was also bummed me out very hard. Lara was dead and that was it. Chronicles later on wasn't too hard and I didn't have those annoying "I'm stuck" moments, although I did hit that game breaking bug at the very last level and it took the wind out of my sails for a while, had to redo the whole thing again. And the ending didn't really solve anything about whether Lara was dead or not, you are just showing me her backpack you old fart! Angel of Darkness was disappointing, I wish they had more time to develop it properly, because it really had some good ideas and the storyline could've gone somewhere, but alas.

Chronicles is easy when you realize that there's going to be some cryptic gaming elements used in the Last Revelation and expanded upon. Like shooting the bell with revolver, burning the tree root with the fire or using grappling hook on Von Croy industries. You kind of immediately know that the game will throw these less familiar situations at you due to TLR. The last level pissed me off when the lasers would not be removed so I could finish the level. Permanently stuck at the last minute of the game, heh.

I've recently got hit with a big nostalgia trip and I decided to replay all of the classic TR games, Im currently going through TR2. The one I'm most excited to reach is TR4 its my absolute favourite in the series and the one that introduced me to it as a whole when I was a lil kid. I remember getting lost so many times and for SO LONG through this game, over a year because I was very young and for a while I didnt have internet and once I got it, well it wasnt the internet of today and I didnt speak english so I had to basically figure everything on my own. I'll agree the game went too hard on some stuff, but I feel that adds to the charm and feeling of accomplishment by the end of it (or maybe thats jsut the nostalgia speaking), I remember feeling so proud like I had never felt before when I finally got to finish this game, it was like a whole childhood adventure of my own that took me well over a year to complete. I think this game will forever have a very special place on my heart no matter what, but I reckon some of its flaws are fair to point out. What I do find funny is that I remember absolutely DESPISING the Cairo levels with a burning passion, they were the ones I got stuck on for the longest time as a kid, one reason being that they really scared me because of how dark they were haha, but also because I got lost constantly and I had no clue what to do next, legit I think it took me like 5 months to get through all of the Cairo levels more or less. I've been wondering for a while if my hatred of the Cairo levels was just due to me being a kid when I played the game but the comments and video are telling me kid me was very much right haha.

Yes, I think if you are to play the Cairo leves even today, it would still be confusing. It would probably be days until you figure what to do. Cairo can be pretty long and everything can look relatively the same when you explore the levels so it's hard to spot where to go, what to do, etc. Lots of backtracking between several sections made me furious at times. And the rotating room. The "returning to previous areas" part was neat. And the Egyptian focus was fantastic. Then it got very dark and I couldn't see what I'm doing. Do you first see the Iris in the treasure room in Croft Manor in TR2? I like how it shows you the item when you pick it up. In TR3 I couldn't tell what I had sometimes. About Irirs - you can see it for the first time in Tomb Raider III - hidden room with trophies. So you just missed the right sequel :D Showing up of the items was in all of the sequels but TR3, I think Core Design sort of forgot to implement it. Rope swinging on one rope is fine, but jumping from rope to rope... it's easy to miss since the rope is thin and it moves in all 360 degrees. So you really need to be patient there. It was the end of Tomb Raider for me. Never played another TR game until Legend came out.

I feel that TR4 gets a lot of flack for "being too long". But I have played this game a few times now, and while I did feel that way after my first playthrough, it starts to feel less like that in subsequent playthroughs. After my third playthrough, I came to realize that, out of the 35 total levels, only 3 or 4 of them (Tomb of Semerkhet, Catacombs, The Lost Library, and maybe Underneath the Sphinx) are the same length as the average TR2 or TR3 level. The rest of them are significantly shorter in scale and do not take nearly as long to get through. Yes, I am aware of the backtracking for some of these levels, and while I am not really a fan of backtracking in games, I can deal with it when it is kept to a minimum or it introduces a new area that has not been explored. Only 1 level (Trenches) required 3 revisits, 2 of which were very short, and only 2 levels (Coastal Ruins and Chambers of Tulun) required 2 revisits, and those were very short as well. The final area, Giza, only has 1 mandatory revisit despite having 9 total levels, and that is just to use some keys to go to another level. My point is, I would disagree if someone told me that TR4 is too long by like 10 to 15 levels. I would say that it is too long by about 2 to 3 levels, since most are much shorter in length.

Tomb Raider: The Last Revelation was the first 3D game I ever played. Never mind internet but we did not even have a computer at home. It was very very very long time ago. I had to go to my father's office after his working hours were finished to play it and only from time to time. So for me it took about 8 months to complete Last Revelation. It was hard and some puzzles took weeks to solve as I did not have any guides. However I absolutely fell in love with this game and it still has a very special place in my heart. Jumping between levels made it very appealing for me as it looked more alive if one can say so. It's somewhat similar to open-world games. You don't have this corridor feeling as if you are being led in only one direction. I find Last Revelation extremely atmospheric, charming and of course interesting. That is why I understand criticism but I do not share it.

Personally i prefer the bigger games, i like to spend a lot of time on a game to get full value. Obviously the game has to be good to keep my attention and TR4 certainly did that with it's vast levels to explore. Egypt was the perfect setting for this epic and i thought it was an awesome game and is my 2nd favorite TR game, 1st place goes to the TR1. I think today games are made more easy to complete but back then you earned bragging rights for completing some of the hardest games ever to complete. The first 4 Tomb Raider games will always be some of the hardest games to complete. I'm doing the remaster games at the moment and have made my way to TR3, which is probably the hardest out of the 4, looking forward once more for a serious hard challenge.

The 4 is too big, and there are too many levels, some could be cut off, others could become one, two small in one decent level. 30% bigger than needed. The 5th is a mess and it got no soul.

I did a marathon of the Tomb Raider games a few years back to catch up, having lost track of the series a long time ago. I got really impatient around TR3 and Last Revelation and ended up skipping most of them to get on to the "next gen" installments like Angel of Darkness. Not that they weren't good, but Eidos really milked that original TR engine for all it was worth and they are loooooong games.

Yes they milked it too much. By the TR3, you could see that the formula is getting stale. Unfortunately, Core blew it with the Angel of Darkness so I guess they weren't capable of changing the gameplay that much - unfortunately.

Forced tutorial was a dud start, but the Valley of The Kings, Karnak and Alexandria chapters were all very good. Easily on path to outpace TR2 (albeit not 1 and 3), but as TR2 upped its game with excellent levels like Barkhang Monastery and especially Temple of Xian in its second half, TR4 falls apart at Cairo, my least liked chapter in the entire classic series, with Giza only being marginally less of a slog Probably my second most disliked chapter now that I think of it.
@kristijan893

That's actually a good comparison/observation. Tomb Raider 2 - gets the adventure going pretty strong in the Tibet and China section which is good, while TR4 drags it down which is so bad it makes you wanna quit. Totally opposite. Bad design choice. And yeah - tutorial should be optional as it was before - not mandatory.

I never played this one , started remastered 1-3 in TR3 atm and I sometimes use walkthrough for a few puzzles that would waste me days. But in these days you won’t find 20 euros for 3 games with high end gameplay and the amount of content/hours each game , even if you 100% guide the three games you would have more content than current 60-80 euros games with easy shit gameplay.

Yeah it was too long, and the bland Giza parts did not help too. If it was more interesting I would not mind the length as much. And the difficulty in the puzzles you mentioned is due to how un-Tomb Raider like they were. In the whole series you didn't interact much with the map, and the puzzle style was same, and in this one suddenly you are expected to use torches, jump-grab trapdoors, pull corpses. Naturally you go on and look for levers etc. instead of thinking the obvious thing to do, because the game didn't work like that before.
@kristijan893

Yes, you nailed it. You never encounter with these kinds of puzzle styles, and now suddenly almost every puzzle wants you to do something that's not Tomb Raider-ish. In real life it makes logical sense, but in the game, it was never present there. That's why some of the stuff in Tomb Raider Chronicles is easier - because now you know that you can expect puzzle styles like sprinkle alarm.
