Tommy Flanagan talks about the unexpected series of events after getting Braveheart under Mel Gibson.
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Tommy Flanagan (Sons of Anarchy, Power Book IV) joins us this week and opens up on how his near death experience after a knife fight led to him not only changing career paths from being a DJ to acting, but also allowed him to realize that it’s okay to fear things in life. Tommy talks about drawing from experiences and interactions in his past to inspire his ‘tough guy’ bravado that he portrays with a lot of the roles he has. We also talk about his underprepared experiences on Braveheart and Gladiator, how he was able to overcome imposter syndrome in this insecure business, and his time shooting Power Book IV: Force.

Mel Gibson owned a world-class cattle ranch near our home in Montana. His employees really liked him. One night he brought the crew into a bar my sister worked at. He tipped so well that my sister went into her bank the next day and paid off her car loan. If memory serves, this was just after the Mad Max series.

I think he's a pretty sound guy as when they were filming braveheart there was a crew of them came into a bar by the Clyde that we were in,Mel was there along with James Cosmo n a load of others, the pub wasn't that busy as it was a Monday but they bought the whole bar drinks n by all accounts Mel was an absolute gentleman n good company.

@@mrblonde1264 If memory serves his name wasn't on the Epstein island logs. There seems to be a trend with Hollywood, if you're not 'in' then you get shit on. I don't think Mel wanted any part of it so they blacklisted him. Just like so many other actors and actresses you read about that have come out against key people.

The historical accuracy argument aimed at this movie is tedious. Just about every second world war movie was grossly inaccurate. The Great Escape featured mostly made up characters and scenarios with maybe two or three actually being based on real people, and there are a plethora of other movies which claim to be based on true events but are simply bullshit. At the end of the day, feature films have absolutely zero obligation to be historically accurate, and Gibson delivered one of the most beautiful and well made epics since the glory days of Spartacus. Every one of those Oscars was earned, and people using flimsy excuses like historical accuracy just come off as salty.

Damn, I guess I never realized Braveheart was Tommy's first movie. His performance made me think I'd seen him in a dozen or so movies dealing with historical realism, or historical fantasy ("Highlander" or "Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves" comes to mind). His performance in Braveheart was so eponymous I didn't realize he wasn't in other such productions in prior years. He's got "THAT FACE", you know?

In 1994 I was driving up Glen Nevis to do some climbing. I was stopped on the road by a traffic control and wondered why. I was informed they were making a film and couldn't let me proceed because I would be in the shot. I was surrounded by highland warriors on a break and looked down into the glen and could see a wooden fort on top of a knoll and an entire village by the side of the river. A little further down the glen were two guys on horses lit up by extra lighting and watched as it was filmed. I ended my day in the hills standing at the top of the mountain that features prominently in the village scenes of the movie and often wonder if I'm in Braveheart!

I'm a student of history, it was my favorite subject in school and still is now. While i love when a movies get it right with historical accuracy, i also know how to look past accuracy while enjoying a film. Some people get very upset when movies change history and Gibson is known for ignoring history or rewriting history, so are 99% of film makers who do historical films or films "based on a true story". Braveheart is an awesome movie and one of my personal favorites.

I like to see historical accuracy as well, but with Braveheart, the way it started told us this was going to be more folklore and not historical record "written by those who have hanged heroes", so I wasn't bothered by the liberties taken.

As much as people bash BRAVEHEART for being historically inaccurate, it needs to be given its due as a film. It brought back and made popular again the epic “cast of thousands” medieval/ancient films of the 50s and 60s. I dare say, if it weren’t for BRAVEHEART, we probably wouldn’t have had films like GLADIATOR, 300, or even the LOTR trilogy.

I don't know if this is anyone else's experience, but for years I would see this guy and never remember where I've seen him. I couldn't connect him to anything I'd seen before, AND BRAVEHEART IS IN MY TOP 10. It wasn't until I started watching SOA in 2010 when it clicked. I was watching Braveheart one Saturday morning and it all came together. I called out to my very disinterested wife....."Hey baby! That's Chibs!" That is the effect of a really great actor.

You and Tommy Flanagan need to make a movie together as villains cause Man, that would be a hellava movie because you could be that out there villain and Tommy your boss or Tommy as the good guy and you the villain, either way, would bea bad ass movie👍

I 'm partially brain-damaged so please forgive my slow-on-the-uptake, but is the interviewer the same guy who played Lex Luthor on the TV show "Smallville"? And Tommy Flanagan rocked his brief roles in "Sin City" and "Smokin Aces".

I have a funny story about that actually so I'm from Ireland and I was in Belfast for a gig at Ulster Hall and there were Italian, French and Americans there. As I was standing in line after sound check and waiting to go in a doorman who was clearly born and bred in Belfast and had a thick Belfast accent was explaining to people at the front of the line what's gonna happen when the doors open. As he was doing it this Hispanic woman who by the way spoke perfect English tapped me on the shoulder and asked me what he was saying because she didn't understand the accent so I had to translate English for someone that can speak English I found that kind of amusing. 😆

the fact that Tommy has massive slash marks on both cheeks definitely helped keep him in the business. It’s a unique look (in Hollywood at least, in Glasgow not so much 😁)
