Tommy Lee’s Studio The Atrium and interview with Engineer Smiley Sean
Earlier this week I went to Tommy Lee’s Studio, The Atrium to record bonus material for the Matt Starr course we've just released. We wanted to show people how to do the Glynn John’s drum technique and also full micing of drums and where better to do this than one of the most famous Drummers in the worlds studio? Tommy’s Engineer is Smiley Sean and yes, Smiley is his real first name!
Smiley has recorded Courtney Love, Motley Crue, Smashing Pumpkins and many more, working with Producers and Engineers such as Michael Beinhorn, Howard Willing and Ross Hogarth. His knowledge of the room is extensive and he gets amazing drum sounds in a matter of minutes! In this video he gives us a tour of the studio, it’s equipment and sits down with me to tell us about his journey and experiences recording.
Please check out the video, like, share and let me know what you think!
Have a marvellous time recording and mixing!
Many thanks
Warren

Straight up, this was great! I was stoked to see Butch Walker's guitar. Obviously, I know the connection now, but at the time as a Motley fan, I was thinking "...who's is that other brilliant voice?!..." It wasn't until a few years later that a work colleague from London turned me on to Butch. Imagine my surprise?! From Marvellous 3 onwards, Butch was/is THE guy who opened my EARS to production. Cheers from Perth, Western Australia.

I really appreciate your reply, Warren. With so many videos, and subscribers to boot! the acknowledgement is no small deal to a bloke like me. I've been to LA a couple of times, the last of which was for a month. I bought my SM7 (...a turn on from Butch!...) at Sam Ash on Sunset, and also a sweet Ibanez SA series for under $500.00 Aussie dollars. Though it was a budget guitar, I put it through my custom "boot camp" once I got home: Graph-tech nut, quality tuners, dimarzios front and back, et al. Thanks again, mate! ;) Leon...

Smiley, it was a pleasure going through each of the outboard equipment that you have to work with in your video. I'm just curious, its been 5 years since this video was created. Do you now feel comfortable working with each piece of outboard equipment? I'm not kidding, I would have loved to have been given the opportunity that you have, to be able to learn each of the outboard equipment available at Atrium and have the freedom to just Learn the Art Of Recording Music. If I had one wish, before I die, it would be given the opportunity to be a "2nd Engineer" at Atrium and assist you, Smiley.

I've noticed the PMC Twotwo 6's are the wrong way round as per the pmc manual. Any reason why that was done that way? Wouldn't that make the center listening position a little bit lacklustre sounding. Tweeters should be on the inner part. Keep up the good work :)
@smileyssean
@smileyssean 7 жыл бұрын
Our PCM reps set them up that way. They sound fine in that position and mixes translate really well. I'll ask the reps when I see them at NAMM. :D

@Djnitrane 7 жыл бұрын
They are fantastic speakers. Have had mine for just over a week. Hence having read the manual placement was fresh in my mind :) And you're absolutley right. Translation is very natural to other systems. Worked on a track for a few hours. Took the rough mix to the car trick. And was like damn this is working well. I love them. Looking forward to getting years and years out of them. Was a pleasure watching this episode. Keep smiling :)))

And yes. I'm curious to see what they've got to say about that placement. Enjoy NAMM too. I was planning on going. Cairo is a long way from LA. Couldn't bring myself to make that 30+ hour trip this year.

I'm just a lowly guitar player & just starting to get into home recording. I can understand the majority of the discussion but some things go over my head. When Warren was talking about the Focusrite ISA828 he said he used them on bass. Miking cabs with cabs...miking an 18" cab with another 18" cab, what exactly does this mean? btw, Warren, thank you for always adding the names of the gear in text at the bottom of your videos.

Hi Voxshades1, I;m just a lowly guitar player! No experts here! We are all juts doing this because we love it! I used the 18 speaker as a mic to mic another 18 inch speaker! It's a trick I stole from Dave Jerden who stole it from Geoff Emerick!! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren

Came across a post on Reddit about the recording of "Paperback Writer". McCartney wanted a new bass sound on the track & the engineer (Geoff Emerick) came up with the idea of recording his bass using a speaker as a mic. An interesting read... www.reddit.com/r/beatles/comments/5jb4a2/paul_seeks_a_new_bass_sound_with_the_recording_of/

I never understand engineers who covered there ears. I bet he even mix like that. Can't imagine developing a good hearing this way. And sitting 6 years beside all this and "barley" touch it, makes me cry.
@Producelikeapro
@Producelikeapro 7 жыл бұрын
Hi Tom, thanks for your comment! I appreciate your opinion. I'm not entirely sure if Smiley is covering his ears? I don't have an opinion on people's habits in creation, some are orthodox, some aren't, the longer I do this the more I realise the results are what matters. There is so much gear in here that Smiley is using a choice amount of pieces and a lot of it is there for guys like Howard Willing, Ross Hogarth or Michael Beinhorn who come in and each need their own choice pieces. Commercial Studios have to cater to a wide range of palettes. Often Engineers will have a handful of things they love and use all the time, but their studios will have a huge amount of gear available to Engineers that come there expecting the equipment. I hope that clarifies? Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
