Building a brand new 2 stroke moped engine! It took over a year of gathering rare parts for this engine. This engine is for my Tomos moped café racer project. It's a 74cc Puch Airsal cylinder with a 21mm Dellorto PHBG and a MVT premium inner rotor ignition. I hope you enjoy!
Parts used for the Café Racer build:
- Fuel tank (without sensor): amzn.to/45jhBs3
- Seat pan: amzn.to/3KOE5Jx
- Speedometer: amzn.to/3OHZO76
- Carbon fiber handlebars: amzn.to/45iABHd
- Clip-ons: amzn.to/3P6LjLw
- Foot pegs: amzn.to/3qNQuX7
- Shift/brake pegs: amzn.to/45gFpNv

35 years ago I did the same gear conversion for my (Dutch) Berini with a Tomos engine. It used forced air cooling, but the carter units were similar. The clutch was a problem indeed! That machine got me around the whole of France afterwards and to the mountain tops of Andorra (with a 50 cc stock engine). A 4 week vacation trip of 4000 km.

It would not get you far with 74cc cylinder. Those engines are notorious for crankshaft failures of any power modification is done.

Tomology! Nice to see someone one that has done nearly same work and engine setup as i have done! My setup is a Tomos 4L Air cooled non pedal engine with transfers welded shut and ported to fit puch cylinder, its a 1983 block with Standard Derbi/AM6 style bearings stock and the crank case restriction holes covered from factory. Top Racing crank, c3 bearings, 24mm PWK, DMP AJH split port 70cc cylinder, Athena AJH piston, Derbi Malossi Reed cage carbon, Minarelli AM6 ignition system and flywheel, 5 gears, custom "Vastapaine" exhaust from Finland handmade, no head gasket but polished + copper grease, m8 cylinder studs 12.9. port timings right now are 203 exhaust and 136 transfers. And oh yea even a 3rd transfer cut at intake into crank case. My engine has been trugh a 10 year project to come to this setup and it screams! Hope you enjoy your engine and its fun to see someone building these old Tomos engines and not the automatics! Awesome! PS: the clutch is not an issue with grip i used one time 4 clutch disks + 6 springs but it bent the assembly but it worked. now i use 3 stock disks + 6 springs and it holds up fine!
@Tomology
@Tomology 3 жыл бұрын
Hey dude, awesome! I remember commenting with you about the clutch and my 5 disk clutch prototype. I ditched that idea and going to try this setup first but I'm guessing those plates won't last long at all. How long do yours last? When I have it running I'll try porting it too. Thought about a spacer in between the cylinder and the crankcase. How did you do it? Thanks for the love! Much love back to you!
@theAngelofhevn
@theAngelofhevn 3 жыл бұрын
@@Tomology My clutch is holding up fine. No slippage whatsoever at any rpm/load. Pretty amazing. Im at the moment running the cheap universal ones for puch/tomos with straight tabs and they clack ALOT at idle even with a brand new clutch cage but cant find the real tomos with bent tabs in Finland. Usually a set of the cheap ones last about 700km with my driving style and 70cc kit before the tabs have worn down to 3/4th of the original width. One thing is for sure the original clutch plate style uses a more harder clutch material than the aftermarket style so its an consern. At the moment i can do a 3rd gear 10000rpm clutch dump against a wall on asfalt and the engine will stall before the clutch slips 😅 One thing i will do when changing cage and a new tomos clutch plates is to weld piece of lathed pipe around the outermost edge of the clutch cage. I think im going to make it about 1.5mm thick and tack it with a tig. I have seen on a Finnish forum a guy that had a 80cc Honda CR cylinder? and the outer lip of the cluch bent like a flower but he was turning 16000rpm with stock clutch 🤔😅 One thing with the piston ported cylinders is usually they have "booster" ports at the back of the cylinder and that interfares with lifting the cylinder because the intake will be exposed to the combustion area and it will run like crap. I did try it by lifting 1.5mm and it exposed 0.5mm and the cylinder was junk. The way i "mill" down the culinder head surface is by just measuring with a digital caliper the length from block mating surface to cylinder head surface and gently using a table belt sander having the cylinder upside down and rotating it. Then measure each time each corner of the cylinder how much i need to take off. I use 40 grit sandpaper and its a nervwracking because of the nicasil if it chips but i have done 2 cylinders and no chips in cylinder liner. When i got the desired height i just do it by hand and use 120, 240, 320 and wet 400 sandpaper on a flat surface to get it smooth. Usually takes about 1h of belt sanding and 20min of manual sanding. Its a bit sketchy method but i use what i have 😅 Just be sure to use a belt sander with a belt as wide as the cylinder. 😎

FINALLY! Someone who doesn't smash their bearings in! How hard is it to get pistons for this kit? You can modify the top of the piston above each port you want to change timing for, so you can modify your timing without cutting your cylinder.
@Tomology
@Tomology 2 жыл бұрын
temp difference is key. pistons are very easy to get and around 25€ so not that expensive. to get max performance you need to cut 3mm away and when cutting the piston it is going to interfere with the piston ring. In my opinion porting the cylinder is the best way

These main bearings have Smaller load capacity, so it is Better to widen the seat of the bearings in the block, and install the Newer - Stronger - Compact bearings 17-40-12, so, that they will stand the Heavyer piston and heavyer horsepower. Plus it Is Much Easyer to Assemble the One-Piece bearings , than the two pieced ones, because you do not need to waste any time with levelling the inner rings of the bearings onto the crankshaft. Those two-pieced bearings (17-40-10) did not stand much more horsepower than stock 2,6 horsepower. They certainly didn't endure more than 2 weeks when i tuned my 38 mm piston on stock cylinder with enlarged ports + dellorto 16 + reso exhaust to the "safe" 5 horsepower , back in the 1988 . But, when i installed the 17-40-12 bearings ( 6203 ) , they were indestructible for many years at 10-12 hp with Bing 22 or 24 .
@Tomology

Tomo, am broke, what gives more speed ? on a gy6 scooter that is. Clutch or Variator + rollers ? And are they worth spending on, i cant tell the difference between a racing clutch and a sport clutch

How much power(hp)does the engine make with that kit?
@Tomology
@Tomology 3 жыл бұрын
really don't know either. it depends on a lot of things. my best guess is between 8 and 12hp but maybe more if the setup is right?! have to put it on a dyno one day!

I heard lubricants should not be used when installing bearings else you risk them spinning in the casing

There are a few mistakes, but overall its a great video and a great engine.👌👍Respect.👍You can check on my channel, how to reinforce the clutch bell. In my city there are some drag races every summer, lot of similar setups, but much more tuned. This cylinder can put out around 15 HP on rear wheel, but the longevity of the engine is very compromised. We also have enduro races with automatic Tomos. Lot of fun. 😊
