On January 1st, 2014, I uploaded the first "Things You Might Not Know" video. Once the initial rush of videos settled down, I aimed for one video a week, and while there have sometimes been guest videos and occasional blatant filler: to my own satisfaction, I never missed a week. But now, it's time to stop.
I never got to space. I never got to the ocean depths. And I never got to fly off into the sunset, harnessed underneath a helicopter. I couldn't find an excuse for that one.

In 1972 I started work as an engineering apprentice and over the next 18 years I worked my way up to be in charge of a nationally known brand, but the higher I climbed the ladder it was clear that the increased workload was taking its toll. In 1990, to much amazement of those around me, I decided to return to the role of hands-on technical electro-mechanical engineering and for the next 31 years my job satisfaction and happiness increased. Learning from the past I was happy to limit my role to what made me happy. Three years ago I finally retired and the decision to acknowledge when the 'time is right' has been one of my better decisions in life. Thank you for your entertainment, it is now YOUR TIME TOM, TO ENJOY LIFE 😊.

It's always seemed bizarre to me that "career progress" always meant transitioning into a different role -- and very often one you don't want or aren't skilled at. It's a problem with hierarchical structure that's totally fixable, but for whatever reason it's all a pyramid that ends in "management."

Thank you Tom for being part of my childhood and for making me who I am today. I’ve been watching you since I was 12 and it’s because of that that I decided to pursue media and content creation and your approach to it has been a guide for me all these years. The 18.8k subscribers of your channel will disagree with me I'm sure, but you would do well to emulate Tom's professionalism and modesty if you wish to see your channel grow to the same level of this one. One comment from you thanking and wishing Tom well and offering your channel as an alternative for those who may be interested, would likely have gained you hundreds of subscribers. Watched him on University Challenge, watched him explaining his "day job" in IT, he would have been successful whatever he did, but his communication skills and "riz", as the kids call it, made him immensely popular on KZfaq. He could have sold out and got a safe job on BBC or Channel Four but he stayed independent and that's hard work. I'm envious, but not jealous. As I suspect you are. I don't have his talent or his capacity for sheer hard work. I envy that, but don't begrudge him his success, financially or otherwise

I pressed play on that video 6 months ago, never made it to the second sentence. I could not spin my head around the idea that Tom would suddenly be gone. I always thought I'd open up YT and Tom would wave at me with a new video, a new perfectly timed transition, a new story that no one asked but everyone loves. It never came. Today, I finally came to terms with that idea and I'm truly happy. Happy that I watched that video, happy to wave a final goodbye, but mostly happy for Tom. May we meet again.
