Ive been considering a dedicated sat nav, this is the best review ive found on the TT550 so far, for a young chap you are doing very well as a reviewer, clear and to the point. This sat nav does what i want, will be ordering one asap. One of the comments pointed out that using a phone is risky if you happen to drop the bike or god forbid crash, cos the phone can get damaged, also a risk if you forget and leave it on the bike while your getting a coffee or something, so sat nav for me, was a toss up between this and the Garmin Zumo XT both good this one seems more rugged, does everything and cost less, sorted 👍

I have the previous version and like it. The no glove option for the screen is for car use. You can get a dash mount and use it in all your motor vehicles. Smart

Bought one of the rider 550 on August 2018 to tour europe, I have had 3 since then absolute nightmare and tomtom have replaced it but with a refurbished unit so technically I have ended up with a secondhand unit for the 400 pounds I paid.

Ordered one and now watching reviews. I have the car and commercial truck tom Tom's and have used Garmin, rand McNally, and a few others . Find tom tom suits my needs and don't like having the phone mounted on the bike bars. I've lost one phone like that & filled another with rain. Great review and 👌 looking bike. Thanks

Bit of advice for sports bike riders/riders whose bikes have clip ons: Spend the extra 20 quid on Amazon and get the stem mount. It'll replace the top yoke nut and give you a place to mount anything in the dead space over your top yoke. Also, how is the satnav for telling you when to change lanes? It's one criticism of Google Maps I have, never tells you what lane to be in, especially in a busy city. Also also, how are you finding riding mirrorless? I'm tempted to get rid of my bar end mirrors/replace them with smaller ones that fold in for filtering

Hi, i am form Poland, and i am really suprised how good in term of sound and how quiet your helmet is. I have HJC IS-17 and over 80 km/h sound is pretty annoying.

Hey mate. This helmet is a spada arc and it has a really good chin curtain which helps. But also all of this footage is at relatively low speed. I also use a wind shield on my mic which helps, and I clip it on the inside of the chin curtain which means it’s really out of the wind. Hope this helps!

Can you connect the TomTom to your phone by wifi, and then hear directions through your headphones plugged into the phone, as I don't have a Bluetooth Headset ? Good review. Apologies in advance for this Newb question !
@assortedpov9722
@assortedpov9722 5 жыл бұрын
Tried that out last night (I don't have a Bluetooth headset either) and the answer is no - the sound comes through the satnav device, not the phone, so plugging earphones into the phone made no difference to anything. But also, tested out this satnav today. Did about 100 miles round trip, about 50 of which were on country lanes I'd never ridden or driven before. I didn't get lost at all. With the volume turned up on the satnav, I could hear instructions maybe 25% of the time over my exhaust and the wind noise that my cheap helmet provides. Frankly I'm now thinking I don't necessarily need to hear the voice instructions - the combination of seeing the route on screen and reading signposts served me well enough.

Good to see a bike electro-tech review. Looks useful . Listening to Google maps (phone in my pocket) through my cheapo V6 headset does sort of work , but I have to concentrate on listening . My wife says I don't listen very well ! Changing the subject slightly , one thing I'd love is a head up display in my helmet mainly for speed, and a green LED that flashes when the indicators are left on. (why can't bikes have self cancelling indicators , or am I being silly ?) I know NUVI do something, but that's blimin expensive . A rear view camera (attached to the bike, and not the helmet ) would be extremely useful in a HUD. (I can't be a proper biker yet , I miss the driving mirror in my car !) . Looking down at the bike instruments, means I'm not looking at the road . Some bunch of electro tech gurus could do with specifying an industry standard wireless interface, so bike instruments could be easily viewed in a head up display helmet, and the helmet would work on all bikes. Maybe it's possible to make something that retro fits to current bikes by connecting to the OBD port for speed and revs at least .

I am considering upgrading from Tom Tom Rider400. I have loads of saved personal locations and routes saved. Is it easy, and do you know how I keep and transfer all my existing data to the new device, as it is not using USB like my old one. Main Reno for upgrading is speed and better touchscreen. Also, I do have connection issues with my SENA20s, is this a known issue. I need to connect with headset and Apple IPhone 8. Any help appreciated. Thanks.
@gr8fulride
@gr8fulride Жыл бұрын
I start over every time on new gps units. My method of transferring my saved places is quite barbaric. One by one . There is probably a way to do it in a few minutes, but it's worth half an hr or so to type in a hundred + or - locations. Ordered a new tom tom rider and I have several other tom tom devices so I trust the product. Looking forward to pairing it with different helmets etc . I'm sure it will do the job. I would have bought the discontinued model as I like that it's smaller but want the ease of updates when necessary.

My Tom Tom car nav from about 2008 still has better accuracy on saying when to turn as compared to Google Maps or the frickin useless in built Garmin Nav in my current car. The Garmin nav also sounds like a female version of Doctor Who's Cybermen. Google maps goes silent when I'm starting off at a junction and doesn't say "left" or "right" until I'm moving. So often I'll go the wrong way and have to turn around. The Garmin tells me to turn way too soon, especially on roundabouts, often leading me to take a wrong turn. Google maps is great for traffic condition reports due to the nature of it being connected to the internet . Oh hum !

What a liberty, 34 in a 30 on a motorcycle wheres the risk? Our stopping distances are way less than cars, and we can avoid hazzards, not to mention its way harder to regulate speed within 5 mph or so on a bike, especially if its a bit of a bruiser. What is the world coming to with jumped up petty enforcement wankers 😡 isnt there a motorcyle lobby group to argue about this ?

The biggest problem with attaching a phone to the bike as a SatNav is if you come off. Your phone is where the bike is and that might be a good way away from where you are injured. Dedicated SatNavs are the only way to go!!

Every time I see the Triumph “classic” bikes, with the exception of one feature, I admire their aesthetics. But, why do they persist producing them with ugly pinch-welded tanks?! That said, I noticed the new scramblers have removed the pinch-weld, so there’s hope! Opps . . . off topic - sorry.
@LuisGarcia-sq5mm
@LuisGarcia-sq5mm 3 жыл бұрын
I am not saying I am crazy about the weld lip but I have never been bothered by it. Further more, I have a hypothesis that perhaps the lips is so that when water falls from the tank, the water doesn’t not weep into the inside of the mechanisms within the tank. A sort of weep stop.
@UncleWally3
@UncleWally3 3 жыл бұрын
@@LuisGarcia-sq5mm Could be, but all the data I’ve been able to gather is that it’s cheaper to produce. Back when I started riding, over fifty years ago, we used to pound out the pinch-weld, roll it up and repaint. It was labor intensive, functionality insignificant, but aesthetically pleasing. Perhaps it’s an “eye of the beholder” type of thing, but I know it’s not only my eye that interprets a pinch-weld as an eyesore.
@UncleWally3
@UncleWally3 3 жыл бұрын
@@LuisGarcia-sq5mm If you research the topic, I think you’ll find the main reason for pinch-welded tanks is to cut production costs. In the old days, people who bought the cheaper bikes used to pound and round out the pinch-welds to make the tanks resemble the more expensive BSA, Triumph, Ariel, Norton and Harley-Davidson tanks. Triumph still hides them on their more expensive bikes “retro” bikes. Eye of the beholder I guess, but I’m far from the only person who sees a pinch-weld as an eyesore.

Good review mate, I ordered this satnav earlier and have watched some utterly useless reviews since then, trying to find out more about how it works in practice. Looks like there's a zoom button when you're in navigation mode - if you zoom in, does it show you which lane you need? Also think I've seen you ride past me several times when I've been walking through New Cross/Deptford. Didn't know there was a monthly bike meet in Greenwich! Perhaps if I can find a house with a garage to live in for next year at university, I'll bring my MT07 into London instead of leaving it in storage. The city would be much more enjoyable on my bike instead of public transport.

@@motobob Tried out the TomTom today - twisty mode delivers pretty well. Had it on medium winding/hilly setting. I'd forgotten that in the British countryside (well around where I grew up at least), although roads look fun on the map, and often take you through some spectacular scenery, many of the surfaces are so bad that they're harrowing enough to ride at sub 30 mph speeds.

You’re just not thinking about it from differing perspectives. If you frequently ride in areas with spotty/no cell coverage, the GPS allows navigation still via satellites not cell towers. Also, keeping your cell phone on you while riding rather than attached to the bike ensures that if you crash in a rural area you will still have your cell phone, which is especially important if your immobile and need first responder help.

WTF, Is it legal to ride in between lanes in the UK? Regardless, it's bad enough for motorcyclists on the road without idiots doing such stupid things. I bet if one of those cars turned sharply and squashed you like a bug that you'd be saying it was their fault for not watching where you were going (if you were still alive).
