You could run wet/dry, or wet/dry/wet with a single Tonex pedal. Run the left output of Tonex direct to 1 channel of a mixer. Run the right output to a delay or modulation pedal with Kill dry function. Then run out of the pedal to a separate channel or channels (if running stereo) on the mixer, then out to studio monitors. You can blend how much wet signal you want against the dry by adjusting the faders on the mixer. I’ve been running my Strymon Iridum like this and more recently my Bluguitar Amp 1. It sounds epic!!

Everything you’ve said is right. I always hated my delay in the loop though because I always ran my Marshall power amp hot and I didn’t like the power amp effect on the delay. It may have been subtle but I could hear it. So this missing feature isn’t a miss for me but more due to my preference than it not being an oversight potentially on IKs part.

Great video. Just like Max I've been running effects after the IR section for years with the Fractal. To me it feels and sounds better then what I typically get out of my amp effects loop. Wish I could run an effects loop after the power section on a Vox for instance without having to purchase something like the power station to do it. Definitely will be getting one of these Tonex pedals. Such a freaking killer idea.

The real problem is that you have a compressor and a reverb built in that you can't use without the FX loop if you have a more extended pedalbord. You have the compressor, but if you are using an ovedrive before the tonex, than you can't use that compressor. You have a reverb, but if you have a delay, you should put the reverb after that, so you can't use it neither. The smart move would have been No FX Loop, No built in effects. Just amp. Now I have two effects I can't use and that will just sit there and the pedalboard will remain of the same dimensions. On another more important note: try the Amp1 from BluGuitar. That is an incredible unit, built by a great guitarist for the guitarists and I still have to find one single flaw. Cheers and great videos! Keep up!

I really did't see the need for an effects loop on the Tonex until, I was doing an A B comparison with my other pedalboard. My other board is similar, instead of the Tonex I use a Neunaber Neuron preamp to a plethora x5 to a specular reverb and out to a pair of two note cabm. On the Tonex board it's Tonex to plethora to specular reverb to temple audio active stereo di. My first board effects sound more connected and overall complete tone "to my ears". The Tonex board the delays and reverbs are not coming thru as lush and present seems more disconnected as you mentioned. Now if I play a gig with either board, I feel good about the tone. It's just while at home making detailed comparison.

Exactly. I appreciate you posting this as it’s good to hear from someone else who notices the same subtle difference. Yes, it’s fine to have effects after cab (sometimes it’s ideal) but it’s not the same as between pre and cab and that was my minor gripe!

A storm in a glass of water ...in decades I haven't seen a guitar player placing any effect between the amp and the cab ...all time base effects such as delays, and reverb and sometimes chorus and others have all gone after the cab/IR section while we know that gates, compressors, octaver, dist & Overdrive plus phaser and flangers usually go in front and the result was always more than satisfactory. The strenght of the Tonex is its capability to get ...amp models much more similar or very close to the original amp than any other so-called profilers like the Kemper can do today etc., ...technology has evolved as it was supposed to be so it makes no wonder why this pedal is now finding a lot of guitar players so interested as long as we don't expect from it what it wasn't planned for. Perhaps a future step will see added all the other peculiarities that will make it a single piece solution but that's still to come.

For me, it's like this - effects added 'in post' or after the amp mic, sound nice and clean and 'expensive' and I love them. Live and in the studio. However going back to my amp and same delays in the amp's loop gave me a sound that was a bit more 'glued together'. I also liked that. So I would LIKE to run some effects into the power amp and the speaker. I'm totally ok with accepting the minor compromise for cost and convenience, but I think it's ok to just mention it and be accurate about it being slightly different to fx after IR.

Probably mentioned by others but what I never hear when talking about the missing effects loop is... being able to use the USB audio interface. It becomes obsolete if you have to run line out into effects. Of course you can run your effects first but then that is totally different as you've spoken about it. As of yet I haven't had a chance to try out a Tonex, but I never hear folks talking about the response of a profiled amp compared with a real amp in terms of the sound of distortion as the gain increases. Surely when you're profiling an amp, you are really only capturing the essence of the amp at a single gain setting of its preamp and power amp. A clean Fender needs a different profile than a distorted Fender. The future is bright for more dynamic processing of course, including the ability to do all the capturing with the single device and not requiring additional software and proprietary interfaces. Thanks for the vid. Cheers!

Only people in the audience who really notice are other guitarists lol - the rest are, hopefully, enjoying the show. However, it's all about how you feel and how it sounds to you when you're playing. I've only ever done a few gigs with IEMs but they changed the game so much in terms of how playing live "felt" - I found myself pulling one ear out just so I could hear the amp instead, but then as I mentioned in another comment, I'm a bloody caveman. However, loads of friends swear by their amp modeller setup of choice and IEMs so... it's a new world and I think all the better for it. At least they won't have the constant hiss in their ears from too many loud gigs over too many years.

I am quite new on my path of learning guitar technology and how to use various connections. I have a line 6 catalyst amp that has a power amp option via the the effects loop connections. I have a pedal collection I would like to use. Just trying to work out how I would connect a Tonex? Do I just use as another pedal, overdrives into tonnex into modulation and then into the normal input (guitar) of the amp? Alternatively does it go in the power amp section of the amp, does this require the pedals to go into the normal input on the amp or are they connected to the tonex in the power amp section of the amp. I am looking at whether perhaps a line 6 helix stomp or whether things like boss ir200, walrus audio or stymon amp simulator. They all seem to have different connection options and I am confused. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you very much for your work on the Tonex Pedal. I am strongly considering to buy one as I am using the AmpliTube plugin for years and absolutely loving it. What I am concerned about is using effects like delay (having a Eventide MicroPitch trying to recreate some EVH like sounds) after the Tonex: As i understand the pedal creates a direct out signal which can be sent directly to a power amp or PA. Now, will adding effects afterwards affect the quality (signal level, dynamics etc.)?
@JonWrightMusicTV
@JonWrightMusicTV Жыл бұрын
No need to worry too much about this. You might want to use a DI box to convert the (unbalanced) Tonex output to a balanced signal that the power amp/pa will like. But the output of the Tonex is unbalanced just like (virtually all) your delay pedals). So it won't get worse.

Thanks for the video. I understand your point. Personally, I don't consider reverbs and delays as effects per se because they don't change the sound. Instead, they create a sense of space or location, simulating the environment or room where the sound will be situated. So, if we use them in front of an amp, it's not a matter of right or wrong; it's simply using them as an effect or modulation, much like Van Halen. Therefore, they no longer serve as natural room simulators for our sound, if you know what I mean. That's why I really miss an FX LOOP in Tone X. Having said that, you can always use reverb and delay, and decrease the amount of mixing them to avoid the unclear sound that comes from using them in front of an amp.

I even dug out Bias Amp where you can build your own modelled amp but once again there's no option for a send and return between pre-amp and power amp stage. I still think IKMultimedia missed a trick with no FX loop (if only for the headphone playing to yourself option) but not the killer miss some seem to be suggesting. In the last 3 years, after 47 years playing guitar, I've felt like the veritable caveman exiting the cave for the first time and seeing all the colours, light and possibilities, thanks to the incredible advances in guitar sound processing. The problem I have is, like that caveman, I think I'll be heading back into the cave where it's dark and safe 😂😂😂😂 I mean, I have my tech - Headrush MX5 into Logic Pro on my mac for recording - and it's good enough for anything I am recording for myself or clients (BBC included bless their decent paying socks) but I still feel that live, like Jon, I would feel odd giving up my crappy old pedals into my Fender/Marshall rig. Seeing as "live" work is not a big issue these days at my age, I was never tempted by the "big boy" rigs like the Kempers, but the ToneX has got my credit card worried again. The fact it can be integrated so nicely into Logic and had great, tried and tested software for onscreen editing, is a massive plus to me. I know I'm already sold on it haha... but, the drummer has just boiled up some mammoth skins and bones for his kit back in the cave, the bassist is able to stand without scaffolding and the singer is dancing around the fire, so I had better get back in the nice, dark, warm cave. Shhh... not a word to them, it'll only confuse them more than me 👍👍👍

Adding an effectloop would double the latency. I know the Tonex offers 3 ms, so adding another ADDA conversion would make that 6 which is perfectly fine. But any other digital effect you then add to the signal chain might add a bit of latency to the signal except when it has a analog/digital mixer for the dry/wet effect. With a multi-effectsprocessor you don't have this problem.
@JonWrightMusicTV

Yes, there's a continuum with latency where it's not a problem... until it is. I see your point but also worth remembering that 3ms is equivalent to being 3ft from your amp, so... I dunno. The only reason anyone runs pedals through an FX loop is to avoid the pre amp from changing the output of the effects and to avoid the extra gain from a power amp. I know the irs in the quad cortex are quite short so possibly you'd hear a bigger difference the longer the ir is but I'm not sure. However, this box (minus my observatation of where I'd like to run delays/reverbs) makes that a possibility without having all that other gear setup and turned on. It would get closer to an amp setup of just turn it on and play but in this case, at any hour of the day. Most of the time I'll be running it into a Radial JDI Duplex, but the Headphone out is a legitimate option on a box like this as part of a large boutique filled pedalboard, or even as a grab and go play in a corner of the house box. So many uses for it.

The implementation of effects loops was to allow you to put clean effects into the amp without adding gain. In a silent rig, putting effects after “the speaker” still allows for these effects to be undisturbed by the gain of the preamp. This is something we can do in the Helix and I don’t find a significant difference. Using the 2notes CabM can take this even a step further by separating the preamp and the power amp.
@JonWrightMusicTV
@JonWrightMusicTV Жыл бұрын
The difference just varies a lot. If a power amp is being pushed into distortion and compression, delay and gain boost behave quite differently. I personally like that sound quite a bit, but not everyone cares about it
@pfmusic1636
@pfmusic1636 Жыл бұрын
@@JonWrightMusicTV i think through an amp this is true, and if you really like that sound try the 2Notes Cab M it can do the poweramp simulation and you can control how much power tube distortion you get. :)

It’s not a deal breaker. Running the effects post does sound great. The issue is that it defeats the purpose of the onboard reverb, as you now can’t run a delay before the reverb but after the amp. So now you have to run a delay and reverb after the Tonex. The built in reverb is kinda pointless then. Second, it defeats the purpose of it being an interface. It can’t send anything post to the daw without a loop. So now you’d need to get a second interface to record your delay and reverb. The interface is sort of a waste as well. If it had a loop with trs balanced outs to front of house it would be more functional as an end of chain device.

Great video but I don’t get why putting delay (stereo in my case) before the ToneX pedal would give me mono out (the pedal’s reverb is stereo)
@JonWrightMusicTV

Because the Tonex only has mono in. There’s no way of running a stereo anything into a mono input.

@@julienbriere1972 Tonex does have stereo out, just no stereo in. Seems like its designed to be treated mostly like an amp. If you really need stereo before the amp, you could do 2 Tonex's and it would still be cheaper than an FM9🤷‍♂. You'll get the benefit of running dual captures too.

For me it's a minor thing. It's the same signal flow as a Kemper or whatever. It would have been a nice option but definitely not a deal breaker and for some, apparently, the preference is effects after cab/mic anyway

Whst you mean to say is that this is a real problem for modellers that use IR capture technology : they capture the entire chain, (even the mic :)). You cannot change anything in this chain after it is modelled, unlike when you use the original amp, where you can add effects between the pre- and power that will change yhe eignal chsin :). (and as a 'bonus', it will not sound like the the original amp, but like the original amp recorded with a mic, a little detail that is usdually conveniently ignored by the manufacturers and YT reviewers ;)

Someone complaining about the lack of fxloop on the tonex just illustrates the lack of understanding of where the fxloop sits in the chain and how amp works. How on Earth can you insert and fxloop between the preamp and poweramp on an amp capture that capture the preamp and poweramp at the same time and combined???
@JonWrightMusicTV
@JonWrightMusicTV Жыл бұрын
Except it's not really a complaint, is it. It's a discussion about the limitations of the system. I'd add, Marc-Andre, that you can somehow turn off the cab in these captures, so there's a virtual insert point there at least. And Kemper has allowed you to do the same for many years. Perhaps there is some knowledge that you could gain in this area too.

This isn't that hard to understand: Effects Loop: Gtr into amp to pre amp then fx loop out pedals into fx loop in then to power amp > cabinet...... Tonex Loop: Gtr into Tonex ... Tonex out to fx... fx into power amp > cabinet (if not using cab sim)... TONEX IS A PRE AMP!... dosent need an fx loop to insert fx before a power amp.....Because TONEX Doesn't have a power amp. IRs dont' effect pedals..

And yet…. ToneX doesn’t have a ‘real’ power amplifier but its tone models include the sound of the power amp including saturation and compression. You might as well say Tonex doesn’t have a microphone - they’re still part of the capture. Wind your neck in a bit
