This video is all about orofacial development! Tongue Posture and Diet are two factors that influence orofacial development enormously, particularly in our childhood years. This is not something that is commonly taught about in anatomy/physiology, medical school, or dental school. It's something that many dentists, myofunctional therapists, and airway-friendly ENTs are becoming more aware of in recent years.
You can truly change your child's growth, development, and facial structure armed with the information in this video. You can also help your children avoid a lifetime of TMJ Disorders - jaw popping, jaw clicking, jaw locking, jaw crackling, headaches, ear pain, stuffy ears, neck pain, shoulder pain, and more!
Please be sure to WATCH UNTIL THE END and don't forget to SUBSCRIBE!

Dr. Mistry, your the best, I wish I had you in my country, hasn't been easy to find a specialist to treat my TMJ. If I'm an adult over 30, and I start to practice myofunctional therapy, can I still correct the arrangement of my oral cavities/jaw? or do I need orthotics guards? or maybe a surgery? Thank you so much for brig this information for us,

Dear Dr. Mistry, you're the best. I've found such a relief watching your videos because it seems like there's light outside this tunnel. Maybe, after all, I'm not going to live my life forever with this. I'm not sure I understand how is the light suction of the tongue against the palate, and should the tongue touch the teeth or should it be at the very back of the mouth without even touch the teeth? Thank you so much.

Hi Angelica! Thank you for your kind words. :) I would highly recommend working with a Myofunctional Therapist rather than trying to change the posture of your tongue by yourself. If you have even a minor tongue tie, you could strain muscles which would lead to pain.

if my palate is so small that only having the tip of tounge is at least so far possible is that preferable to just letting it rest at bottom? is there any consequnces to letting only tip of tounge touch roof of mouth? i think many people just have tip of touinge as natural state meanwhile much fewer have all 3rds and again this channel is easily the best TMJ oriented channel

@theTMJdoc
@theTMJdoc 3 жыл бұрын
I think it’s more about the splint/orthotic being correctly made rather than the type of splint. It’s all about the relationship of the upper arch to the lower arch and what that does for the muscles, joints, and ligaments..

I'm in the middle of my journey to heal from TMJ and posture issues and I'm very appreciative of your videos. Do you have, or do you have plans to record, a video talking about tongue biting/chewing and scalloped tongue, and how those relate to TMJ, chronic clenching etc? That is one of the biggest issues for me, especially I would reflexively nibble on my tongue in stressful or anxious situations (still do unless I catch myself), and I'd wake up every day with a scalloped tongue until I started wearing a night guard last year. Would also love to see alternatives for myofunctional therapy in terms of tongue positioning for people who can't find specialists in their area. Thanks!
@theTMJdoc
@theTMJdoc 2 жыл бұрын
I can make a video on scalloped tongue. As for tongue positioning, I don't have another option besides seeing someone that provides myofunctional therapy. The reason for this is that if you try to attain proper tongue posture on your own, you can end up straining muscles and causing pain.
@EfrainReyes
@EfrainReyes 2 жыл бұрын
@@theTMJdoc yep that's exactly my experience, I tried a couple years ago to learn to reposition my tongue on my own, before I even knew TMJ was a thing, and all I did was heavily strain my body while positioning the tongue wrongly (just the tip and middle on the palate). Being an Aspie (hypo-sensitivity to strong pain) I also wasn't aware of how bad the pain was until it was really really unbearable!

what are your thoughts on mandibular expansion. it seems that upper jaw expansion is a common thing but what if you need to widen the lower jaw. is that possible? and if so can you discuss or do a video on that please !! creating more room for the tongue is so important. and if one widens the maxilla, wouldn't they also have to widen the lower jaw to get things to fit properly ? thanks !!!
@theTMJdoc
@theTMJdoc 2 жыл бұрын
Yes ideally both upper and lower arches would be widened. There is an appliance called the ALF that can do this, if used correctly by someone who knows what they're doing. I'm not an orthodontist and I do not have clinical experience with expansion so I do not feel comfortable speaking on this too much.

@@theTMJdoc interesting. does it actually widen the bones or just tip the teeth? i guess either way, for me, it would still accomplish what i need and help match upper and lower jaw as well as create more space for my tongue. Potentially improving airway. Worth a shot for me as long as it has evidence behind its effectiveness. I feel like as a child, orthodontist generally pulled teeth inwards, i feel this is backwards thinking cause dont we want to expand the jaws/airways. Creating more space for tongue and improving breathing. I will have to look into the ALF device, that gives me some hope that there are options outside of surgery.
