I hope he was only referring to the lyrics, essentially calling them proggy juvenile gibberish, with a couple strong points. 🤷🏿‍♀️

Tony was the reason Steve Hackett left. Of course he would downplay the brilliance of it. It has one of Steve's best moments in genesis. That legendary guitar solo stands out for me more than the rest of the song.

As a little kid i had this odd fascination with maps, and always used to ask my dad why they'd spelt fourth wrong on the map haha. How ironic that i was to become a genesis fan....

The right question should be: ¨How did you come out with the intro? What was the process of writing it?¨ but on the other hand Tony`s answer is somehow so uneven and almost vague in musical writing terns on the point that forces me to think, (and believe me, I´m a hardcore fan who always wanted to ask that very same question to him) that he was problably not 100% involved in the composition, that he might even had some kind of help at the time (specially on the syncopated left hand bass arrangements, plus the also different later Prosoloist Synth solo hammond accompaniment), and I `m not disappointingly pointing fingers but makes me think: wasn`t Firth of Fifth Piano intro fully written and recorded by Tony then? just figuring out now from his own answers.

I think it’s way more likely Tony’s vagueness was because he didn’t know how to answer that question, so he just said random stuff about how the intro was created and recorded in the hopes it would be relevant. Who else do you think would’ve done it lmao? Would be a pretty hard thing to get in sync as a duet.

Hey we have Tony Banks on the phone willing to talk about Firth Of Fifth. Let’s ask him questions that we can just google the answer to. Or let’s ask him to describe the lyrics bc that’s not boring at all. I wish one time could sit down with Tony Banks at a piano and conduct an interview. I would have him explain the writing process in detail. These interviewers suck.

Now I just need to find out what "undinal" means. Also I wonder if Peter changed a certain word while recording but the published lyrics stayed the same, because to my ears it sounds like he's clearly singing "so VIRTUE has claimed another soul" rather than "Neptune." Good move there Peter if that's what you did.

Personally I think googling numbs the brain.Just listen to the music without comment and analysis. Music is great when we cannot find the words to describe it'.
