Merry Christmas my fellow Banksians!! I have a nice interview here to celebrate today!! In this interview Tony & Phil are interviewed on Christmas Eve. They discuss the history of Genesis and creating the music for Wind & Wuthering, Phil becoming the lead singer and many other interesting topics.
This is the first video I've uploaded where Tony isn't the only one interviewed. Since Tony does a good deal of speaking I decided to upload it here! I hope you all enjoy this! I hope you all have a great day.
(Tony & Phil are interviewed by Jeff Polack of KBPI FM.)

Great interview. Tony Banks' "Theres no ones opinion I respect enough to matter to my writing" really summaries his career

I was one of the few girls in high school in the 70's that was into Genesis. As time went on they became more popular and I then had one of my albums stolen by a friend. I love the early albums for their unique songs, I could just appreciate the music. This is a great interview, I wish I heard it back in the day.

This is how stimulating conversation/thoughts were exchanged back in the day. A lost art form.. Like Genesis music. Thanks for this. ✨

"A real pretty piece that ends with a little piano..." One For the Vine -- a supremely underrated art-rock classic and one of Genesis' (and Tony's) best tunes! That and Blood On the Rooftops absolutely make that album magic. Great interview and interviewer. Thx for the upload!

I love the 1980 live version of that song and also the 1977 Zurich bootleg version. Shame Seconds Out was not a triple album. Plenty of material.

This is brilliant, exactly how every musician interview should be, the interviewer asks interesting questions and knows what he’s talking about and he lets Phil & Tony talk.👌🏻

Hey! I'm not the only one who thought Phil sounded like Peter--so did they and the interviewer! I first realized that while watching them in their early days when Phil would take the mic as Peter flew around the audience. Such a great band. Thanks for sharing this vintage gem!

They were pretty big in England already (Foxtrot no 12, SEBTP no 3, The Lamb no 10, ATTOT no 3 and W&W no 7) and reaching higher in the charts with every new album in the States.

I'm so surprised by what they said about Selling England but its honest. Maybe it was a difficult time during making it. It's going to be a big favourite of lots of people.

Great listening to this conversation. Quite surreal really! I grew up listening to this band from the age of ten . Imagine having all those records to investigate while scanning the details of the covers! Unhip but completely unique. Phil Collins is a trooper. Beautiful drummer thoughtfully discussing aspects of 70’s music and culture without negative/commercial showbiz pressure. Imagine..... “its all luck really” “No compromise!” “We can do exactly what we want!” Polite young gentlemen too! Thanks for uploading.

Genesis is somewhat unique in that all five, then four, then three were evenly matched. They were a real ensemble rather than a star and the back-up. Strong writers with a strong point of view. Thoughtful interview. Love this album (Wind and Wuthering). It keeps moving up in my estimation.....cream rising, perhaps.

It was my first album I purchased by Genesis and probably my personal favorite. One for the Vine is my favorite track. It's very melodic, very humbling. Another outstanding track is Blood on the Roof Tops. Thank you for sharing these interviews.

Strange how the interviewer thought Phil sounded like Peter. I've heard other people say this before and it never made sense to me -- I think they sound completely different. The reason people thought they sounded alike was probably because they were hearing Phil's backing vocals on the PG-era albums and mistakenly thought it was Peter.
@BanksianCentral

jhillst Honestly I never thought Phil sounded like Peter either. Maybe if you started off on the early albums first then moved on to something like 'A Trick of the Tail' Phil's voice might could be mistaken somewhat. As they went along though Phil's voice really grew and became something different altogether. More powerful.

+Banksian Central what's your take on Tony Banks editorial powers on the together and apart documentary? I love Tony for what he brought to Genesis but I think he comes across as a bit of a control freak, especially when it comes to giving Steve Hackett a fair crack of the whip.

jhillst ~ Yea! l came into Genesis with _And then there were Three_ and listened to the rest because l heard that Bill Bruf was playing with them. l FLIPPED when l heard _Second's Out_ and _Trick of the Tail_ etc, at just how INCREDIBLE they were! Then l heard Peter in _Selling...._ and was taken with the similarity in styles... way _back then._ However, getting to know them like l do now....there's a HUGE difference! l like em _BOTH!_ But you are right about the ''power'' in Phil's emotion and pipes!

He wasn't the one that edited the documentary. That was the BBC that did that. Tony was even on record saying that he thought it was wrong for them to not include anything on Steve's solo career, let alone cutting out what was talked about when they covered "Wind & Wuthering", and "Calling All Stations". So, pretty much none of the guys in Genesis cared too much for the end result.

Peter and Phil are definitely quite distinct singers. Peter is lower, gruffer and grittier, while Phil has a more compact tone. But there is a small bit of overlap in the middle, no doubt.

Wow, yeah they really disparage "The Battle of Epping Forest". To heck with the lyrics, I rarely pay any attention to lyrics, the music on that track is about the best they'd done. The main verses have a really cool funky groove, and just the right keyboard sound, not overbearing in any way. And 'the reverend' middle part has a catchy Jethro Tull sound to it, quirky British folk that's easy to enjoy. But again I'm talking strictly about the song's music, not so much the lyrics.

But the melody is detached from the chord structure. It's one of the few times it was obvious when Peter created the top line after the backing track was near complete. Made "Epping" difficult for me to appreciate, beyond the story in the lyrics.

Love these little insights. Luv ‘Epping Forest’ & it’s surreal to know at least 2 of the group don’t like it. Unbelievable to think the group released ‘Tail’...toured then also did ‘Wind’ all in one year. Real musicians & songwriters

Mike wasn’t fond of it either afterwards, Steve on the other hand is much more appreciative of the earlier ”busy” material with Peter’s eccentric lyrics. Peter seems to stand behind most of the stuff they did back then. I saw Steve performing Selling England in it’s entirety in May 2019 and oh boy, was it amazing!

Maybe they realised it later because they did it in 1978 live. It appears also on the 4th side of the UK 3 sides live and it's stonking good with Mellotton and tons of double drums.

@Luka Meah And the problem they had before The Fountain of Salmacis. Chesters' bass drum. Show has the best Down and out even though Phil's messes the lyrics a little. And genesis did not tour in 1979.

Interviewer is the classic 70’s AOR DJ, way too low key and mellow, a bit patronizing too. Interesting hearing then talking about “hits”. They certainly learned how to write hits.

Phil and Tony likely laughed on the way home at the clueless wank of an interviewer. Genesis was somewhat unknown in the States at this time but it’s no excuse for being so unprepared. He definitely didn’t work his way up to Rolling Stone.
