A voice of reason in a situation where no one is interested in having one😕 A former Prime Minister, knows how it works, knows the accurate figures, the lot, he has no personal self interest in this and still so many here are discrediting his knowledge of knowing how the system works and what the consequences of Brexit most likely will be. I sincerely wish you Brexit since you so passionately want it, enjoy all the pleasures it will bring you.

I don't think you actually listened to what he said, and made the link to what he actually did. He said the main concern in the EU is immigration, and the EU need to listen to the people. Yet he himself allowed uncontrolled immigration, and he himself didn't listen either. Part of the reason for people voting Brexit. He's a clown. Only now does he get it, 20 years later.

For the record I'm not a Brexiteer. For me Blair chucked away all the respect I had for him, luckily I don't have to listen to him anymore. It was the same neo liberalism that pressed the right wing idiots into voting for Brexit. He should be locked up here and be forced to experience Brexit first hand, along with David Cameron.

if it is so hard to listen to Tony Blair, what for opening up his conversation with Evan Davis to add those useless comments about Iraq
@stevebailey5591
@stevebailey5591 6 жыл бұрын
Perhaps people see politicians as liars not because of 'populism' but because they recall being told we were 45 minutes away from a mushroom cloud over London if Iraq wasn't invaded - a country that turned out not to have a single WMD (but which does, incidentally, have more oil reserves than Saudi Arabia).
@stevebailey5591
@stevebailey5591 6 жыл бұрын
You're quite right - it was ridiculous; the idea that a nation that had been subject to 12 years of sanctions and which was under constant scrutiny could develop an inter continental WMD. However, it was Tony Blair who made that claim in parliament - not me. Don't tell me that Iraq's oil reserves weren't key to the decision to go in - it certainly wasn't (I hope you'd concede) for reasons of propagating democracy, note how Zimbabwe of the same period was left alone. It's interesting that you cite the U.N in support of your implicitly pro-Blair/pro-invasion comments when, in fact, the U.N explicitly refused to sanction that course of action.
@stevebailey5591
@stevebailey5591 6 жыл бұрын
But did the U.N sign off on invading Iraq? No, it didn't - it explicitly disagreed with that preemptively made decision. Western forces left Iraq because involvement there was too costly in money and the bad publicity for politicians of western soldiers' lives being lost. The reason it was too costly was that no thought whatsoever was put into post-Iraq reconstruction. The 'model' at the time was western involvement post-war Japan - a totally different situation and society. I don't know where Iraq's oil goes now but one thing I'd bet my life on is that those who lobbied for invasion have made a fortune since the invasion (that's certainly true of Tony Blair who has 'earned' huge amounts from the U.S as a reward for his delivery of U.K diplomatic and military support for a legally dubious war). I'm also not sure why you're saying I'm self regarding - I haven't actually mentioned myself once.

They went into Afghanistan because it was a failed state which was used as a base of operations by an international terrorist group - something that didn't get proper attention until 9/11. Iraq, however, was an invasion without any legitimacy or exit strategy - and, in fact, something that created a far better base of operations for Islamic terrorism than Afghanistan had ever been.

Why didn't you offer a referendum on the invasion of Iraq, Mr Blair, if they are such a good idea that we can have any number of them on the one topic?
@JohnSmith-gv9wx
@JohnSmith-gv9wx 6 жыл бұрын
As obviously at that time 'the people', as in all of us, are untrustworthy to make such an important decision, and now we should be trusted again and again to make the 'right' decision. The situation at the moment is far from great and maybe another referendum is possible but it does seem ironic when Tony Blair recommends it, for exactly the reason you mention.

Ziolek2000 of course I agree on that count also, I am a British patriot and care about our troops wherever they have to be. There were innocent deaths on both sides, all because of an elitest grabe for natural resources. Alot of troops thought they were going to help and make a difference, the innocents of Iraq wanted a peaceful life and look where we're at, corrupt elites still send all to there death's for the sake of 💰.

Yes, Tony is a wretchedly hypocritical warmonger who’s responsible for a frightening amount of death and mayhem - But this is about Brexit, not his many and endless failings as a human being, so it would be just lovely if some of you, any of you, could posit some solution to Brexit, seeing as we Still appear to without any plan whatsoever about how to leave, and what to do about the Northern Ireland Border issue, given Britain’s responsibility to resolve That particular harebrained self-imposed problem,
@michaelrch
@michaelrch 6 жыл бұрын
Ver Coda It’s true. Brexiteers haven’t learned anything in the last 2 years. They refuse to. Every promise made about how it would be “the easiest trade deal in human history” and that we would be able to stay in the Single Market while restricting immigration etc etc has been shown to be empty and a deceit but they are too tribal and blinkered to care. They say that we voted for a hard Brexit, but at the time of the referendum, 42% of LEAVE voters thought that staying in the Single Market was a bigger priority than restricting immigration, along with 94% of Remain voters. Now they rant on about how we voted for a “clean break” which we patently didn’t. If the ballot paper had said remain or leave with no deal it would have been a landslide remain vote, which is precisely why. UKIP et al never put forward any proposals for what Brexit would look like. They knew they would lose if they did, just as the SNP lost the Scottish Independence vote. Farage has not just implied this. He has said it explicitly. His strategy was Brexit at any cost. It was a fail betrayal of the electorate for his petty, narrow bigoted ideology, not just by Farage but by every prominent Brexiteer that participated in his deceit.

Even so called Labour supporters repeat Tory propaganda blaming Labour for what Tories caused. I feel like giving up on politics in this country. They go on and on supporting Tory propaganda about Blair and Iraq, while forgetting more Tory MPs voted in favour of 2nd war against Iraq than other parties. Which carried on from when Thatcher made rest of Europe hate us to turn us into USA state, with economy of deregulated banks, which even crashed by early 90s when they were still in power, giving them an excuse to not put money into what public services they hadn't stolen and sold off to make them worst in Europe. They don't even remember all the good things Labour did when they were last in power like getting rid of most hereditary Lords, first ever minimum wage, both of which Tories tried to vote against. More than ever to university at minimal fee, peace plan with northern Ireland. Lower unemployment figures after Tories made millions unemployed. Help stop old people dying of the cold after Tories caused more than ever to die after stealing and selling off public owned energy.

This guy comes from an era where politics was actually not as laughable as it is today. When everyday people didn't feel like they knew what was best for the country and voted out. Sure he went to Iraq, the US would've gone regardless, but look at the military, echonomic and social ties we have with them (the wealthiest, most influential country in the world). Building on or renewing that relationship isn't foolish. These righters, who wrote comments and disliked this vid, are criticising him for Iraq - when did you suddenly start caring so much about people in the middle east? I remember all the optimism of 97. The amazing feeling in the country and the booming economy through to the millennium. Then September 11th 2001 and everything changed. The world would never be the same again. The decisions he made then have helped to bring on global instability not seen since 1945. Then 2008 probably the biggest global economical crash ever. I worry for the future but I want us out of the corrupt undemocratic eu. You had your chance Tony and you fd it up. Go away and let us have our sovereignty back. You will not force us into a European nation.

there should be no debate about brexit, there should only be a collective will to deliver on what we voted for, we voted to leave the european union as well all its adjuncts like the single market and customs union, we voted to become independent from the EU so we, and we alone, could create our own laws and not be governed by a far off bureaucracy. Blair even talking in terms of reversing the vote is engaging in anti democratic activism, he's an bona-fide anti democracy activist and should not be appearing on prime time TV to push the crushing of a democratic vote! his whole demeanour smacks of "i know whats best for you, you're all idiots who didn't;t know what you were voting for"

That's funny, I don't remember the ballot specifying the kind of brexit we would get, just to remain or leave the EU. Given how close the referendum was you're going to have to show the vast majority of brexiteers voted for a hard brexit, otherwise you've got a majority of the public wanting a soft brexit at least because all those remainers, that brexiteers keep forgetting about, certainly would prefer a soft brexit to a hard brexit.
@rogerbennett9641
@rogerbennett9641 6 жыл бұрын
Blair doesn't like leaders to be elected. The referendum was held to find out if the people wanted to leave the EU, it was only advisory. The government decided to take the advice of the people and leave, there was then a general election in which both main parties had in their manifesto that they would take the UK out of the EU both those parties then received a massive majority of the votes, the Tories having their largest share ever. Leaving the EU means not being in the single market, not being in the customs union not being subject to the EU courts ruling or the 4 freedoms etc, not paying any money to the EU and making all our MEP's and their hangers on redundant Those are just a few of the advantages I don't really see any drawbacks.

But a lot of the Brexiteers such as Nigel farage, Mathew elliot, Arron Banks and Daniel Hannan were suggesting a Norway type deal? Suggesting people all voted for a hard Brexit, is frankly total nonsense. The Brexiteers have certainly pulled a bait and switch however, advocating for a Norway type deal before the referendum and then demanding a hard Brexit after. Given what was offered clearly the "will of the people" is not a hard Brexit?
@rogerbennett9641
@rogerbennett9641 6 жыл бұрын
After we leave however you describe it, a Norway type deal or any other type deal will be a possibility, it will be up to the government to decide. Saying that before the vote was accurate then as now, it didn't say on the ballot paper tick for this deal or that deal so stop with the brainwashing B S.

His skills in leadership and oratory can't be doubted. That's lethal when combined with left-wing values. Now there is no real prospect for all those different immigrant communities assimilating with each other, let alone the whites. It's satisfying that the ramifications of his policies materialised within his lifetime. He must know his offspring will live to see far worse after his life expires.

Populism = Vocal popular opinions = popular opinions = democratically realised opinions. I dont understand why this term populism gets bandied about like its poison. Populism is simply the rawest form of democracy. If a political opinion is widely popular, the political landscape will reflect that. Populism = democracy.

if you remove european institutions, if you don't get any longer funds from the eu and people do not come to London easily any longer ( especially big universities will fail and, in turn, all the economies related to that), if the companies leave because they do not have the workforce they need, if there will not be any longer easy trade deals with the eu, tons of jobs will disappear, tons of companies will relocate. So as a logic consequence there will be less money out there in the uk for years and years. So it will be the mother of all the disgraces.
