Those numbers are nonsense as far as I’m concerned because Hardy is not taking into account the strikes the men have thrown on the feet vs strikes they’ve thrown on the ground. You can’t count ground and pound or strikes off the back because it’s impossible to knock someone down when you’re both grounded already. I’m sure Tony is still lacking in punches thrown vs knockdowns caused but still. How much time has tony spent on the ground vs leech? Astronomically more. I understand why Hardy wouldn’t take that into consideration though, because it’s probably a more difficult stat to track than just total career strikes thrown

@@jagaloon14 good point and ill also add as a lesser point, it doesnt take into account the chins of people theyre vsing. imo tony has one of the nastiest resume's of all time. even though hes lost a few recently the level of fighter and particularly brawler who can eat punches for breakfast is insane. if you look at the last 10 fights of both you can see that the level tonys fighting at is much higher and harder to get knockdowns

You said Tony's best striking is close range, which I partially agree with. He's better at volume and slicing in close. However if you look at his knockouts and knockdowns, he finds those at range. Typically from an awkward angle. Like the Chandler knockdown, the Nijem KO, Kikuno, Mcgilvary, and even the uppercut against Gaethje. He definitely has power at range.

@@xavierb9061 I’d argue that for example the body work that Gane did to both Tuivasa and Lewis, was more devastating than headhunting would have been in either fight. So to access the more damaging headshot, body work might be the key.
@TheThigh
@TheThigh Жыл бұрын
@@xavierb9061 This isn’t up for debate. By attacking a different part of the body, you’re breaking your opponent down physically and conditioning them with the wrong response. If we take Adesanya and make him exclusively a headhunter, he’d be far less effective. His finishing power isn’t in his sheer punching power, but his ability to lead his opponents onto unexpected shots, or beat up their lead leg and counter when they step onto it. By your argumentation, we should exclude jabs because they’re less powerful than crosses.

4:42 We have to remember Tony is a wrestler, yes… but a wrestler who always fancies himself an elite striker (and works hard to be that and prove it, and therefore has manufactured decent success at it…), and he can get sucked into brawls where he finds the resistance is offering him a lot to prove- even when it goes south for him (see, Gaethje). He tends to read what is in front of him, and go with it, sometimes following that rabbit hole into unnecessary danger and risk (see, all his fights 😆), only to creatively pull the rabbit out of a hat and find a way to victory. I always felt he puts striking first, then his jiu-jitsu, and then lastly his wrestling almost to the point of neglect, or at least a limitation to entry/exit defense and scrambling. 🤔 100% agree that Tony’s move up to 170lb might be too late to reap much advantage now… it might just amount to a Diaz/Cerrone thing, where they are basically same guy as they were at 155, just not really cutting weight before a fight, and a little slower and softer. This is such an interesting matchup… certainly not a given for today’s Tony.

Awesome breakdown as always Dan! Just a question about the knockdown ratio stat (which I think is very interesting and cool). Isn't the issue with this stat that the total strikes of different fighters don't take into account which percentage can actually result in a "normal" knockdown (as in punches or kicks to the head). I don't know if the UFC provides this info, but would it not be better to only consider punches to the head when using the KDR stat to determine a fighter's punching power?
@DanHardyFR

There is a lot more breaking down to do, to make it more accurate and specific. Khamzat, for example, has landed 378 total strikes, but more than half will have been on the ground, so he wouldn’t be able to score a knockdown. Also, all knockdowns aren’t the same. Low kicks, body shots, head kicks, etc. all need separating out to make it more accurate. I’m working on it though. 😉

Loved the video Dan. Here's a talking point to chat about or just ponder. Tony takes a lot of damage in fights. let's not merely point to the last 4 obvious fights. I remember watching him vs Pettis. He got dropped by Anthony a few times. Was laying on his back trying to collect his wits. He was also getting smacked around by Lee. He isn't slick in my mind. He has been relying on pure toughness for far too long, and I question whether his body is now trying to save his brain and shut him off early. You can be too tough for your own body. Eventually, the brain says no more. If Tony isn't at this stage already, he's not far off.

Judging from Tony's last fight his technical striking improved by miles which makes me think he's gonna strike with Li Jing Liang, though I agree a grappling centric strategy would give Tony the best chance to win. A similar strategy Magny used against Li, mixing some quick striking with fence control/takedowns, would be ideal for Tony. Though with much greater effort required based on the difference in sheer strength and physicality.
