Reading these comments reassures me about my own situation. Abusers always make it seem like it's not a big deal and can't understand why their child hates them. I'm glad Tonya realized it was wrong and spoke out.

I vaguely remember a quote from one of Tonya's friends, back around the time of the whole knee bashing saga, to the effect that when Tonya married Jeff Gillooley that it was as if she'd married a male version of her mother, abusive and hypercritical. If you only have just one Mum, it does more serious that if that one is abusive because it's irreplacable. What Tonya's Mum did with Tonya is unforgivable and it also contributed to Tonya's problem. With the rumors spreading around that she is responsible for the attack and if the incident was not properly investigated and everyone went along doing their business, other skaters will be afraid of doing something that might upset Tonya out of fear of being assaulted. The rest of the athletes will go on thinking that violence at the end of the day is tolerated and trying to do the right thing wouldn't matter. This will make talented skaters afraid to pursue the sport. Among the things you mentioned above, nobody is directly affected. The motives were not meant to directly implicate hurt on someone. If the US Figure Skating Association tolerated Tonya Harding, it would create a ripple effect that would cause fear, distrust, it would promote violence and draw away people and sponsors. It has the potential to do the sport a pretty big damage
