Just a few days before both of Walt Disney World's "traveling theater" rides close forever, Some Jerk With A Camera examines the history and legacy of both.

I rode the Great Movie Ride back in spring, and... Yeah, it was obvious that the ride was dying. The cast members were bored and barely involved, the line queue had next to no recognizable props left, and the animatronics were... Well, lemme just say that Indiana Jones had amazing balance because he only had one leg left. While it's sad that this legacy is going away, this was a mercy killing more than anything.

I went this summer and my car's CM did rather well in my opinion. We had technical difficulties near the beginning and he actually recounted the story of what happened to the Footlight Parade scene and how Gene Kelly signed off for his animatronic likeness (short answer: they took Gene out to drink to be more receptive).

Same. I only got to ride it once, but I got the cowboy, and it was a lot of fun. Still, if anything had to replace it, a ride-able version of "Get A Horse!" is the best possible option. Disney is, now that I think of it, braver than Nintendo with its flagship character-- they were so scared to give Mickey a personality forever, and now they're experimenting with it and realizing it won't damage their brand, while Nintendo still doesn't want to do that with Mario.

Yeah, the Great Movie Ride was a classy little place to escape out of the heat for a few minutes and pleasantly explore film history. I almost wish that they could have just redressed it for some of Disney's more classic and obscure properties. The stuff that would never get a ride of its own. But with that said, finally getting a modern Mickey ride sounds awesome.

6:37 Last week I was in Disney, and decided to give Ellen a shot since it's closing and we'd never done it before. So we got on, we read/heard that it was almost 40 minutes long, and as soon as the doors on the vehicle close and the film started...nose bleed! Sat there for 40 minutes with just a tissue to keep the bleeding from getting too bad.

That's why I love it so much, for the jabs at zeitgeist mentality. It's the most heartwarmingly cynical of Disney rides. Each era presented was intentionally dated and short-sighted. Each generation thinks they're the best it's ever gonna get. Even the theme song, "Now is the best time of your life," is an open mockery of that kind of thinking. It's due for a technical update, sure, but the message alone makes it one of the most meaningful shows in all of the parks. That and the theatre spins. Ohhhhhhh, how it spins. Little kid me loves how the theatre spins. He thinks it's the coolest thing ever.

@@TonyGoldmark The last scene could definitely do with an update, one KZfaqr argued the entire thing should be updated, mainly because nobody from those first two seasons is alive to be able to ride the ride and look back, so maybe that’s why they should update the scenes.

It sent me on a life path to make movies. One of my dreams was always to be a famous director working for disney and we would be promoting one of my new movies for them and I would take over as the tour guide on the ride and people would freak out and record it with their phones. When it comes to the Great Movie Ride I wish they wouldn't get ride of it completely. I think what they should do is make new movie scenes to visit! Think about it Disney has Marvel, Muppets, and STAR WARS rights, and could make new scenes from those movies! Imagine how cool it would be to go from a scene from the Guardians of the Galaxy to a Death Star escape from a New Hope. The possibilities I think are endless. The Mickey Mouse ride seems cool, but I think there are less popular attractions to replace with something like that. Like the One Man's dream area could probably fit a dark ride inside the space, and how fitting would that be if Disney's attraction would get replaced with a Mickey attraction.

As a film buff and lover of Classical Era Hollywood I will dearly miss the Great Movie Ride. I always knew it wasn't thrilling to most people and it was increasingly pathetic that the animatronic scenes were never updated past Raiders of the Lost Ark, but I never cared. When that montage played at the end showing all those movies, all those legendary actors and actresses, all those genres, it brought such joy. I wish Disney preserved their rides by recording them for posterity. Then they could always be enjoyed via a virtual reality headset or at the very least a video (something more professional than a tourist's camcorder wildly darting about to catch all the details), but I'll just have to be content with my memories.

Oh my God you're playing "Hey, A Movie!" from The Great Muppet Caper during the Great Movie Ride scenes! I HEART YOU! I understand the Movie Ride was a little hoary, but I do kind of miss it...I loved the emphasis on classic movies. It's something I hope both movie-based theme parks don't forget. I'm all in favor of spotlighting newer faves, of course, but that can run the risk of becoming dated in time, and the classics should have a place as well.

Great "State of the Parks" video, as always, Tony. So "Guardians of the Galaxy" is the only Marvel property that Disney can use on the east coast? Well... Just like how the success of "Mission Breakout" will, more than likely, lead to an Avengers ride at DCA, following the success of "Guardians" at Epcot, we can all look forward to Walt Disney World's opening of "Dr. Strange Ride: or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bargain." The Great Movie Ride was always one of my favorites growing up, and, despite TCM seriously messing up the pre-show/closing films, it's still a ride that I made a point of visiting at least once every trip, and I'm quite sad to see it go. Ellen, on the other hand...

Guardians, Black Panther, Dr. Strange (who was played by a GORGEOUS actor at Disney Studios in the 2016 run-up to the movie's release)...any property that's not already at Islands of Adventure. As good as Marvel Island at Universal is...it does seem kind of stuck in the pre-MCU 1990s, and I wish Disney could work something out so they can get all the Marvel characters back for the East Coast and Universal can re-do the island into something new.

The GMR will be dearly missed... it gave a young 8 yr old me a greater appreciation for classic film and I have great memories of my mom and dad telling me what's movie each scene was from. When I heard about the change to a Mickey train ride I was honestly upset that a great piece of park's history would be lost... not since TestTracks remodeling was I this upset (half due to nostalgia but also half due to it being kinda boring now...). Honestly, I'm less angry now and just hoping that they can make the new attractions work and be good. Hopefully I can visit the parks before the big 50 anniversary but I honestly am crushed I can't say goodbye to one of my favorite rides one last time.

lol, the Golden Girls House... when my brother was in high school he got to go to Disneyland with his marching band (I was rather jealous), and when he came back he showed me a picture he took of the Golden Girl House and said it was for me... I looked at it in puzzlement and said "What is this?" (You see what it looks like! ) and he exclaims that "it's the Golden Girl House, you like that show I thought you would like it." ... my brother went to Disneyland and brought me a picture of the GGH as a gift, and even though I like the show, I never really noticed their house, but I guess it was the thought that counted, lol ... sigh - but seeing it in this video made me think of it again after all these year and laugh, so thanks for that!

And the sad thing is that it's true that they tried to downplay the climate change issue in the script (the most it gets is something like "scientists aren't sure if oil and coal are sustainable and safe long-term fuel sources") among other things, despite the issue not having been quite so politicized in the mid-90s, it's just that the issue was overshadowed by the boycotts on Ellen.

This is an episode of farewells on multiple levels, and I empathize with you. I'll never get to ride either attraction. There's no way I'll get to Epcot by this Sunday, and I have to be somewhere on Sunday, anyway. Even if Movie Ride was a big TCM ad, I'd have probably enjoyed listening to Mr. Osbourne as I grew up with that channel. However, just as Mission: Breakout turned out to be amazing, I bet the new rides will also be amazing. They'll be an Epcot ride replacing nothing for once! You've said you've wanted them to fill up their park. I guess that's a bit of a dream come true. I hope to see you get to review all this new stuff for Disneyworld's 50th and that you have fun doing it. In meantime, keep on keeping on. You're really good. Thanks for the video.

A bit out of my depth since I'm a fan in California and not Florida, and the last time I was at WDW I was just a toddler. But.... -Ellen's Energy Adventure, based on the various anecdotal accounts and YT POV videos...yeah, this one has been long, LONG overdue for an update. Even putting aside its' rep as being one of the lamest attractions in Future World. So it leaving isn't too big of a deal. Granted it's not helped that we still have no idea what kind of attraction the new GotG ride will be, so we kind of just have to leave it at that. -Great Movie Ride...yeah this one I imagine stings a lot more for Florida fans. Aside from being an opening day attraction, this was considered to be one of the big icon that represented Hollywood Studios. Sure, it not being able to update every few years with other movies kind of sucked, but considering the movies on display were the timeless classics it would have held up on its' own. So to have that taken over by, seemingly, more corporate synergy is...not something that could easily be brushed off.

I had just finished a Disney World trip right before D23's announcements and while at Epcot, I legitimately couldn't believe the Ellen ride was still there. Then when I sat through the ride again, it surprised me even more they would keep a ride so ridiculously dated and not in any of the funny ways like Carousel of Progress. The Great Movie Ride though I actually kind of loved more than I did as a kid because this time I actually recognized most of the movies on display. The GMR closing was actually the one part of the D23 stuff that actually made me sad.

While I do believe these new rides have the potential to be great, I wish there was some way to have them without removing existing material. Sure, Ellen's Energy Adventure might be cheesy and dated, but sometimes when you go to a theme park, you expect a certain amount of cheese, and I honestly like the educational parts of Epcot. And the Great Movie Ride is an all-time classic, not just because it was a day-one attraction, but also, where else in the world are you gonna see animatronic depictions of some the most famous movies of all time, let alone in one building? I wish I could've gone on either of these rides when my family went to WDW back in 2011, but I didn't have as much knowledge about them back then, and we didn't exactly have a lot of time there, anyway.

My last trip to Hollywood Studios back in May we rode the Great Movie Ride as a time-killer to wait for a Fast Pass for another ride. I am glad we got to see it one last time before they closed it down. As for the "Ellenverse of Energy", I used to love the original Universe of Energy (yes even the so-called boring parts, I eventually found it fascinating info as I got a little older), but ever since they shoehorned Ellen into the ride, I didn't find it as entertaining as the original and I only rode it once or twice when it first reopened as such, and then I always tended to skip it in favor of other rides and attractions at Epcot like Test Track or Soarin'.

Honestly I just keep thinking about how hilarious it would be if Clint Eastwood DIDN'T sign off on his animatronic and they had to keep the paper bag over his animatronic's head until they could replace it. And yeah I'm also gonna miss the Great Movie Ride (at least I got to ride it last summer, for the first and last time) because when I rode it all I could think was; I wanna be a cast member on this ride if I do the college program because it looks like a lot of fun! And now I won't get the chance. I still wanna do the college program tho.

My only problem with Mickey & Minnie is that if they're touting this as "Mickey's first ride", I feel like it ought to use the official character designs, or the classic black and white designs, or heck, maybe even work in both somehow. Aside from that, it's a perfect idea for a replacement ride to put in the Chinese Theater replica I do have a gripe with the Guardians ride not being a clone of Mission Breakout, but that's largely just personal bias as to what I would have liked. I've seen some people say that it's because Florida already has Tower of Terror so it'd be redundant, but if that's the reason then what's Disney's excuse for Magic Kingdom having two Dumbos right next to each other and an Aladdin-themed Dumbo a short walk away...? I mean, I'm glad to see Disney make more original rides instead of just cloning rides from other parks, and there's no rule saying they couldn't just clone it anyway in the future and put it in, say, Tommorowland. And heck, what right do I have to complain when Disney World has two more parks than Disneyland and a digital Fastpass system that you don't have to pay for? But I can't say I'm not disappointed. Still, hopefully I can practice what has been preached to me and that I said "hey, you know what, you're right" to, and I'll try to head into the new Guardians ride with an open mind.

Last I checked, Florida's Dumbo is essentially two machines grouped into the same attraction in order to help move lines along faster... unless that's something you'd like to do away with for authenticity's sake, in which case HELL YEAH LET'S HAVE ONLY ONE OF EVERYTHING EVERYWHERE! Only one simulator on Star Tours? Sure, why not? Only one library/showroom in Enchanted Tales with Belle? Go right ahead! Only one log going through Splash Mountain every day? Who's stopping you? In fact, who says we need multiple Disney resorts anyway? Let's just have the one in California from now on, so we can have harder accessibility and zero diversity! Am I crazier than Eisner yet?

I'm not complaining about the multiple Dumbos, though I can see how it looked like that; I'm saying that the idea I've seen some propose, that Disney didn't clone Mission: Breakout for Florida because we still have Tower of Terror, doesn't really make sense because if Disney can have multiple Dumbos in the same park with few differences, why can't we have two drop rides on the same coast with a bunch of differences?

Once the new shorts get canceled I think they'll update the designs to be the official designs. If the ride is as screen-focused as rumors claim, then I think it'll be easy to swap out the animation with different designs

Mission: Breakout would be an E-ticket attraction. Having two E-tickets (I know ToT isn't technically E-ticket but it's easily popular enough that the parks seem to be treating it like one) with the exact same concept and different atmospheres is really different from having Dumbo and Aladdin because they're mostly just cheap things to do while you wait for better rides.

I agree with you thoughts on GMR Tony, and what makes the demise all the more sad is the fact that GMR was the origin for the Studios in the first place (Long story short, the attraction began as part of an Epcot Pavilion celebrating the history of Entertainment, and the idea grew from there)

I wish I had gone on Great Movie Ride back in 2012, I'm sure I would've enjoyed it but we were short on time since we had to eat at a restaurant near Echo Lake at Hollywood Studios at a certain time so we didn't really have the time to do it. Universe of Energy was okay, especially the animatronics but DINOSAUR has it beat honestly in terms of Animatronics imo. Hopefully both rides will do fine.

Kinda sucks that by the time I'll be at Disney World in a few weeks, both of these attractions will already be gone. Their closings were really announced on short notice, with only 1 month since the D23 parks panel. Even when Mission Breakout was announced last year, DCA's Tower of Terror still had plenty of months left before closing.

The only forseeable problem with the Guardians ride is that it could feel woefully dated in 20 years, not totally unlike Ellen's Energy Adventure. In 2041 these movies may not have the relevance or popularity that they enjoy now, and I don't know that they can be seen as "timeless" either. They're too irreverent and too steeped in the popular culture of both the present and the still-nostalgic recent past.

*sad face* I loved Lights Motors Action. As a kid I never really played video games but watched them, and my favorite game to watch was a PS2 game called "stuntman" in which you played a Hollywood stunt driver starting your career with small low budget flicks and working your way up to being fucking James Bond! So seeing that stunt show was like seeing that game in real life, and as a kid that's what I wanted to do as an adult. I wanted to be a stunt driver. I still tear up a little any time I watch the final run in Florida. Now I am 100% looking forward to Star Wars Galaxy's Edge in 20whatever, but the attraction it closed will always have a place in my heart.

Man, and here I was thinking that our Guardians of the Galaxy ride would make people from Florida come to California. But I guess them losing the Great Movie Ride is the same as us losing our Tower of Terror, so I'd call it even for now.

You're both modest and honest. Mr. G, I hope to meet you again some day, and have money to buy you the dinner I couldn't get you at Dragon*Con. However...the word "foamer" sounded like it describes the folks at that rally with tiki torches (apparently the torches were bought at Hobby Lobby). That's why I thought it an original, fresh insult.

Tony Goldmark, with The Great Movie Ride closing its doors, you believe a name change is coming to Hollywood Studios itself? I myself thought this as soon as they announced Star Wars land, but this new development cements that to me. Also do you fear Epcot is straying from its original concept with a Guardians ride coming? PS cant wait to hear your opinion regarding Tron coming to Magic Kingdom.

I recall Bob Iger mentioned plans for a name change for Hollywood Studios a few years ago, and another rumor was that they were considering renaming it "Hollywood Adventure", which would come full circle of DCA cloning several elements from Hollywood Studios.

Epcot kind of needs to embrace the characters. Especially the non traditional Disney characters. That central main area of Epcot with all the Science and Tech stuff seems the perfect space to develop a bit of a Guardians of the Galaxy feel. Heck they could have shot the Xandar scenes from the first movie there. Epcot's lost or is losing most of its remaining corporate sponsors. Disney needs to flip it to a character and movie based destination. You can only go so far loading up the adults with food and booze.
