Another tip I would give is remember to punch, not push. When I was starting I got into the bad habit of pushing the bag at the end of my punch since I didn't have a lot of strength, as a result I got out of balance with every punch and I delayed getting my hands back to my guard. It's one thing to punch through and another completely different to punch, stop and then push. Thankfully a coach noticed it and helped me to get rid of that habit. But it's always better to never start with bad habits, since correcting them can take a while.

Great timing with this video because yesterday I was having some problems with the heavy bag. My trainer told me I was "pushing" the punches (because the heavybag was swinging) rather than "shooting". I always keep in mind to punch through the bag and that gives me the power to make it swing a lot even with a single right hand(using my whole bodyweight). And here my question rises: "Is there a way to punch without making it swing as much or it's just a normal occurrence since I'm punching it hard". To me the simple answer would be "inertia" but my trainer kept telling me it shouldn't swing even with big punches. I don't know if I'm doing something wrong or my trainer isn't as knowledgeable as I thought he would be.

It's all about your timing of your punches Vs the movement of the bag.
@carlosimotti3933
@carlosimotti3933 2 жыл бұрын
It's a matter of distance. The heavybag swings not because of the power of your punches, but because you're too close, therefore extending your arm while hitting and so pushing the bag. Ideally your fist should hit the bag when arm is fully extended, so that the bag doesn't move at all - the so called snap punch. Use your footwork to adjust, if you stand still you'll always be too close. The "through" punch, you can be a little closer but not that much as causing the bag to swing a lot, just half your forearm let's say. It's the way heavy hitters as Tyson or Joe Louis etc. threw their KO rights or hooks, but only after landing perfect snap openers with their jab (Louis) or body shots and uppercuts (Tyson) or either anfter feinting. You can see both type of punches in this video.
@Z3A5F7T
@Z3A5F7T 2 жыл бұрын
Oh yeah, i am in this very same situation as well, whereas my trainer, who's a former champion in my city, keeps telling me to punch the heavy bag when it reaches the end of the pendulum swinging process (so as to imitate you being aggressive and go close range with your opponent) rather than it coming back as Tony suggested here, so the bag just keeps swinging higher and higher and he would start yelling that the bag should not go this high... The catch is, he never told me how this should be corrected, but after i asked him this question, he stopped yelling, but still insisted that i should hit the heavy bag when it is most "away" from me, and that whoever teaches you to punch it when it gets closer don't know what they are doing...
@akenu87
@akenu87 2 жыл бұрын
@@Z3A5F7T I don't know your trainer, so this is going to be a stretch, but I think what he meant is that you shouldn't punch the heavy bag when it's its closest to you and it starts swinging back away from you. If you notice what Tony does, he punches the bag when it is still swinging towards him. As for the "hitting the bag close" versus "hitting the bag when it's away". I would say practice both. A little aggression can go a long way, but being too aggressive can make your defense sloppy.

I have a question. How do you produce the most punching power? I keep hearing you want to punch through your opponent. But I also hear to produce power you want to produce a snapping motion. By fully extending your arm and quickly snapping it back yo your face. I guess it's the best of both worlds. Creating a snaping motion with the intention of going through your opponent. Idk 🤷‍♂️

the problem with "punching through" is you lose your distance. not you exactly, 'cause you're a pro, but people who do it thoughtless. because, "punching through" means bringing more power to, well, punch through, taking a step closer, taking a bigger swing, thus being open to a counter punch, and so on. imo, you should rather work on your distance and timing, so your punches be on the spot with full extension (for 1-2 combo, for instance). and those rabbit's shots you showed are, probably, about being afraid to hit hard 'cause you're hurting your hands of a bad technique. and what happen when you combine bad form with power? injuries.

I want to learn to fight, Not so i can beat people up, So people can't beat me up ive been in plenty of fights in my life and ive never started them from memory i think ive won 40 and lost about 4 im not the best fighter but the greatest tool ive ever used is element of suprise, I find if you can land the first punch (in self defence as possible cause you know they are going to try and batter you) and i usually get them in a headlock after i land the first punch, but i feel if they try and grab you around waist i release the headlock crouch down and just smash them as hard as i can with a backwards elbow , When i was younger i tended to headbutt people my headbutts were vicious but i reliased i did just as much damage to myself as i just grab there collar and hit them with my forehead lol i never learned to hit them with top of my head so it hurts me less lol suprised i never knocked myself out
