Tony & Chelsea Northrup test the Sony ZV-1 Mk II as a vlogging camera for KZfaq, TikTok, Instagram, Twitch, and other social media video sites. The Sony ZV1 II has a fixed super-wide angle zoom, active stabilization, flip screen, and built-in direcitonal mic. It's good, but how does it compare to the camera you already have - an iPhone 14 Pro?
Comparing the Sony ZV-1 Mk II against the iPhone 14 Pro as a vlogging camera involves many different tests, and the results are mixed. In many cases, the Sony vlogging camera is better than the iPhone. After all, it has a 1-inch sensor and an 18-50mm f/5-f/11 (in 35mm equivalent terms) lens. However, the iPhone clearly wins some other scenarios, with its four relatively fast prime lenses.

I still wish Sony would revive the RX100 series. Even though smartphones have taken over the point and shoot market, I still think there is room for the RX100 series for photographers who want a dedicated point and shoot camera.

Great video, I use both my ZV-1 and my iPhone 14 Pro for vlogging, along with the GoPro Hero 9. Thing I love about iPhone vlogging is you can be discrete, whereas with both the ZV-1 and GPH9, it's not as bad as my R6, but you still will stand out vs if just holding the phone. My biggest issue with iPhone vlogging is the microphone. I still use the phone mics, and more times than not I get little to no audio because my hand blocks the microphone. But so far I've made it work. I'm gonna have to take a look at the ZV-1 mk II.

Another great comparison, but one important thing missing was a wide angle sample at low light from the iPhone. Ultra-wide and selfie cams didn’t stand a chance, but it would be interesting to see how close iPhone could get to Sony, with that f/6.3 equiv. lens combined with Apple’s processing

ZV-1mII is not worth it. I would say they should just cancel that line but the ZV-E10 is still an excellent choice because the sensor-size is much better, you can get much better lens, add filters and truly start getting the semi-pro experience. What Sony needs to do is hurry up and release an APSC camera that does 4k 60fps for reasonable price then they’ll have another hit on their hands!
@alexanderlarsen4628

The sony VZ-1 MII shoots incredible macro, using a tiny bit of zoom helps it focus fast and better and when shooting macro at 60fps you can get really beautiful slow mo of things like bees coming into land. You need it in the right mode for focusing aka groumet or showcase mode.. The iPhone .5x mode doesn't work well for macro IMO because the focus area is TINY and it causes massive distortion around the perimeter of the shot and to me the VZ-1 still looked better.

Actually, if you want to use a phone for photography, you could buy a Sony Xperia series phone. My Xperia 10 iii can save all files (photo and video) to MicroSD card which makes it easy to move to a computer for editing. Or, if you don't need editing, then you can share it simlarly to the iPhones. Or, I could use my Xperia phone to view various files created on a ZV-1 Mk II.

Phone cameras have come along way since they came out. Some how for me when shooting a hand held video if there is not a little sway in it, it dose not seem normal to me, this could be from the 3d animation I make and introduce a slight sway to create the feeling of realism in it. When it comes to photography each series and brands of digital cameras has it's own characteristics I like comparison, but I would not down either the iPhone or the Sony ZV-1 MK II. I believe people should consider what they can afford and the characteristic they want to best meet their needs for photography and video.

I agree, all these camera geeks can't get over the fact that for most people the iphone is so much easier, and looks better for where the footage will be viewed. For video, larger sensor size can be a negative, since it is harder to stabilize. The iPhone stabilization is much better. The Smart phones have swallowed up the under $1000 camera market for most of us for video. Allot of KZfaq Channels do not use cameras, they use phones and GoPros. There videos look fine, it is the content that matters. 4K video only uses 9 MP, these smaller sensor cameras on the iPhone look fine

I think the camera has one point over the iphone that I cannot see the phone compensating at the moment: it is getting used to handling a camera. Switching from an iphone or from a ZV camera to a bigger camera is not the same. You can definitely get used to using a bigger camera easier with a point a shoot camera rather than a phone. That is not a point for everyone, but for people wanting to get into videography and handling cameras but don't want to spend too much on a starter camera are better served with a compact one like this (probably even better served with a ZV-E10 body with changing lenses) rather than a phone, BUT that is probably only applicable to a niche audience

How does the ZV-1 not have any bokeh when the lens is f1.8 at 18mm? You didn't set the mode to aperture-priority?
@TonyAndChelsea
@TonyAndChelsea Жыл бұрын
You're clearly knowledgable but the marketing is deliberately misleading here. The lens is NOT physically 18mm, it's 18mm in "full-frame equivalent" terms. The lens IS physically f/1.8, but in "full-frame equivalent terms" that's f/5 at 18mm. So images have similar depth-of-field to an 18mm f/5 full-frame camera... and basically that's infinite depth-of-field even wide open. The telephoto end is 50mm f/11 equivalent, again, not fast enough to blur the background noticeable. The slides at 1:33 show the proper equivalent specs. Visit sdp.io/crop for more info.
@misterabroad123
@misterabroad123 Жыл бұрын
@@TonyAndChelsea I forgot to ask about the auto-focus since the ZV-1ii features PDAF. I understand your conversion process and "full-frame equivalency" however there still exists background separation at the widest angle and f1.8. At 9:55 since you have it set to 24fps, the f-stop increased to reduce the amount of light to the lens. At 60fps and 18mm (6.9mm) I'm sure you can get bokeh. The Canon G7x does it at f1.8 and the Lumix LX 10 does it at f1.4. I just don't know why you didn't test the 60fps aperture-priority mode since many of your most of your channel's videos are at 60fps.

I can’t really see the point now of getting a camera under an APS C sized sensor. The phones are too close to the 1 inch sensors. The 1 inch sensors are better in low light but well below an APS C or FF. You are much better off with a cheaper Nikon Z30 which is a vastly superior camera, I compared it to the first ZV1 which I also had.

I just wish one of these phone companies would go back to making a regular phone with a 1inch sensor camera attachment you can buy separate and only use when you actually want to take photos. DXO One was a nice product. But it was fatally flawed since it couldn’t draw power from the phone. USB-C should fix that problem.

Did you realise how much cost you could still recoup from your sales of ZV1 and A6400? Phones dont hold up their resale value well they are worth half of their initial price after just 1~2 years and after 3~4 years they are as valuable as a paperweight. I could buy a used ZV1 today and sell it after 2 years at almost the same price I bought it for.

I think the auto-HDR mode (and lower "fake" DoF in cinematic mode) results in most lay people preferring the Iphone footage over the Sony. Yes, you can fix the Sony footage by using the right video-format and dedicated software, after you downloaded the images to your computer at home. The workflow of the Iphone is clearly superior for beginners. For social media, I don't see the advantage of the Sony and would rather increase quantity over video quality. For KZfaq, the Sony is superior. They are different tools for different uses (and users).

The phone looked terribly clunky to deal with, and had a worse user experience over all. Just being able to use the best lens and see yourself, the optical zoom, the built in ND, the handling and ergonomics built for purpose, not getting notification pings, not draining the phone battery or storage, - And that's all before image quality. Honestly, if you want to film anything that's not up close and in broad daylight: the camera is the better tool. At least I'll get 40mp images of receipts and items at the grocery store to whatsapp my wife with the iPhone. 😂
