The 1970 Shelby's were comprised of unsold 1969 models. Priced at 20 to 25 percent higher than the Mach 1 and Boss Mustangs of 1969 these cars were poorly positioned by Ford Motor Company. Today these cars are highly valued and appreciated by collectors as they are one of the rarest Shelby Mustangs built in the muscle car era.

You can see some of the styling cues in the 69 Shelby carried over into the 71-73 front ends.

I have a 1969 gt350. 1 of 1. I love it. A gen survivor. Drive it daily rain hail or shine. 55 thousand miles and loving every minute of it.

Oh wow, to know about this in its historical context at the time. To have purchased a number of these as long term investments would have been remarkable, and probably saved a lot if original spec bodies. The iconic Cobra symbol and the cheese grater grill are stand-out features to me. Along with the stripes and the two front locking controls. I didn't like them as much as a kid, because of the change, but have since come to love and appreciate them.

Personal opinion, this was the best looking Mustang ever built, I would love one with a 351 WIndsor great motor. On a visit from Australia to the Shelby Factory a few years ago a guy rocked up in one to find some history on it. It wasn’t restored but it was beautiful. Couldn’t buy it but still have the photos of it! Nice to dream.

When I was a teenager, guy down the street had one of these, always thought it looked good. He always had a Shelby in his driveway of one model or the other.

My Father (RIP) sold his 1969 Shelby GT500 to pay for me being born in 1975. I hope to find that car some day and give it to my Mother.

Any Shelby I’d be proud to own even this one, but after 68 the front body changes on this one I liked the least of all the models, the GT350 in 68 being my dream mustang. Now I do still like the 71-73 look over other later mustangs and any first gen is solid in my book. Doing a 69 Fastback atm.

Kind of like the Road Runner Superbirds and Charger Daytonas. Nobody wanted them when they were new. Now they are expensive collectors items.

It's not uncommon. The price difference for the Shelby was the killer. It was $1,500 more than a Mach 1 with less performance. Same deal with the winged cars and they were not the easiest cars to park either.

I was surprised to see a Charger Daytona sitting in the back of this guys shed in the small town in NZ i live in. It was in primer grey, the interior had been removed then stuff back in all hap hazard, and the engine was on an engine stand covered in dust.

That GT 350 is one hell of a looker, being a brit I remember my dads ford Cortina MK3, the dash layout and steering wheel, I can see where Ford European got thier influences from, still this isn't about ford cortina's so it's a brilliant vid with cool looking cars.

Thank you for your great Knowledge. I just am reminded in Australia, of the Australian muscle car Monaro, 1971, coupe by manufacturer GM Holden, who didn’t change serial numbers/plates (??) but they had 600 1971 coupe bodies unsold, in 1975 they are using them for the new model, and then the next! Throwing all the options at the late 1970s model HxLe monaro. To sell them! Standard: honeycomb mag wheels, electric windows, gold pinstripes/metallic, a/c standard velour!, etc.

Thank you for the kind words and for sharing. I have an interest in cars built outside the U.S. unfortunately when I made video about a few world cars almost no one watched it so i pulled it. Maybe someday people will open up to cars that were available elsewhere.

I love Fords; I’m a dedicated Ford fan = I can’t afford any of these cars these days but I’ve had a few 2010 gt ; 66 mustang pony car = but can’t afford them these days = oh snd 95 f- 150 with in line 6

Good video . However 68 shelbys were built at Metuchen, NJ plant . Look at the 1st two digits of the vins they are all 8T. Not sure on the super early dual vin cars tho.

The 1968 Shelby Mustangs were only built for 9 months. All the Mustangs destined for Shelby conversion were produced at Ford's Metuchen assembly plant in New Jersey. The cars were shipped by rail to A.O. Smith in Western Michigan for final assembly. The "knockdown" Mustangs were shipped in running condition, some had stock Mustang hoods and some had fiberglass. The cars were shipped without front grille assemblies, taillights and valences. So technically yes you are correct but these bare bones cars didn't become certified Shelby's until they left the A.O. Smith facility.

Tony's Fords and Mustangs I have always wondered about the early dual vin 68 Shelbys from 68 . Any of those cars start life at a the Shelby facility in late 67? I don't know.

@@dannystewart1803 I don't believe so but anything's possible. Carol Shelby really had grown tired of making production cars. It wasn't what he was interested in doing. Each year after 65 the cars became less race and more like a production cars. The shift to western Michigan as a final assembly point for the Shelby's was the beginning of the end.

I've had mine new since 1970, there was a glut of the marketplace then, and I am now getting it fully restored changed the color to gulfstream aqua, and black to white interior on the road soon.

That's a bizarre story. Reminiscent of the Cosworth Vega except I'm pretty sure GM didn't have to send any Cosworth Vegas back to Detroit.

It really came down to cost versus performance. A Shelby was by far the most expensive car in Fords line up in 1969 and not the best performer . So they just sat on dealers lots.

@@TonysFordsandMustangs The Cosworth Vega was pretty potent at the time with 140hp when most the V8 engines were detuned to meet the new (at the time) emissions regulations. Especially for a fairly light car.

Shelby wanted to put the Boss 302 in the GT350 But ford wouldn’t approve it.

That's possible but Shelby and Ford were pretty much done at that point. Some of it may have had to do with "Bunkie" Knudsen being named President of Ford in early of 1968 & Lee Iacocca being pushed to the side during that time frame? That's speculation on my part but it didn't take Lee Iacocca long to bring Shelby over to Chrysler when he had the chance.

I think it had something to do with they way they were sent to shelby if unsold it became alot easier to make the switch to 70! Just a guess
