I'd love to see an episode where they're all having a meeting and Brenda reveals that she's displaying some of her paintings at a local gallery and invites her co workers to come. Shes so afraid of being rejected...only to have everyone enthusiastically congratulate her and plan to attend. 😊

A quote from one of my favorite books: "'But people will think I'm conceited.'. 'My dear girl, if that's the worst anyone thinks of you, you'll be lucky. Think of all the books, paintings, or discoveries that would never have happened if the writers, artists, and explorers had worried about what people thought about them.'"

@@Joel--yr6me It's a children's novel written in the 40s by "pony book" author Josephine Pullein Thompson. Title is _Six Ponies_. It follows seven children asked to start and train six untrained ponies. Some of them are tactful, good trainers, a few are various kinds of impatient or ineffective, and several of them learn and grow as people as well as horse trainers.

You may have heard this allegory. There were two lumberjacks in a competition to see who could chop an oak tree down the fastest. The first lumberjack focused on that one task, chopping and chopping, never stopping. This lumberjack noticed the second lumberjack every 15 minutes or so stopping to take break. The lumberjack smiled to himself. Proud of his better conditioning and strength. About an hour later, the first lumberjack hears the second lumberjack's tree start to creak and hit the forest floor. He had lost the competition. Confused, he went up to the second lumberjack and asked, "How did you win? I never stopped chopping. I saw you every taking breaks about every 15 minutes!" The second lumberjack said, "I wasn't just taking a break, I was resharpening my axe." The moral of the story is, your mind and body are your axe. You have to take the time to gain a different perspective not only physically but mentally. Take your breaks and come back to the problem fresh. You just might even see a solution you didn't see before.

That was also a story on little house on the prarie when Charles Ingalls was about to beat an older man chopping through a tree trunk. But - plot twist - he knew the old guy needed the glory and to impress his wife. And as Charles had far more years ahead of him, he swapped his sharpened axe with his duller ones to give the old man an advantage.

Can we talk about how Brenda's outfits have changes since she's been getting help from Donna Sue? Before she was always in the drab mustard yellow cardigan, covering all of her, pulled tightly around her chest as if it was the only thing holding her together. Now she's in something nicer with colour and floral patterns. Her arms are bare now, showing more skin. As if she's finally able to breath and expose herself. Also, the flowers are purple/pink. Colours that were only seen on Donna Sue before. As if Donna Sue's wisdom and compassion planted little seeds in Brenda, that now blossomed into pretty flowers, that still hold that loving essence of their origin. I love details like this!

What really does help is doing sth that needs total focus, so you can't even think about work. And since lack of movement is a problem for desk workers, I'd recommend climbing or dancing (done both, works perfectly), a group sport is also nice (have not tried except for school).

“What will everyone think if I start taking breaks and disconnecting?” Well Brenda, I actually think your coworkers will be silently routing for you. To see Brenda get back in touch w/ her inner humanity by having things in her life that at one point brought her joy (painting, Ned, etc) remind her that she IS a person and not a robot, and to have a supportive coworker who understands what you’re going through feeling like you have to sacrifice your life for your job. Brenda, I and I hope others too, will think so incredibly highly of you. The first step in solving a problem is recognizing that there is one. And Brenda, you took the first step by asking for help! 💚 Now get out your easel!

For me, the first step is accepting that my to-do list is longer than is possible to complete in one day or even one week. And that's not only okay, but it's a good thing! It means that I will have something to do tomorrow and I'm not running out of work, which would be a sign that I wasn't being challenged enough. Second, I put self-care activities on my to-do list as high-priority items. I don't write it down, just mentally frame it that way, but for other people who struggle more to take a break, actually writing it with all your other tasks may help. Set aside everything else nagging me to go for a walk? That's not a waste of time, that's doing the thing that is second-highest priority for the evening (the first is always dinner).

@teresawood6830 I have to disagree with you on this. Personally, I have found no one who does this to themselves. Something like this is always caused by outside pressures and expectations, be those from friends and family, or culture and community. While those might be with the best of intentions in some cases, they can be internalized in a way that manifests in a killing of the self to be a better cog in the wheel. Artists who, on a whole, do not confirm to societal standards simply by the virtue of being artistic, rarely flourish in the flouressence of cubicles.

If you don't take steps to look after yourself, then you are in less of a position to help others. I've never worked in a corporate environment, so these specifics are alien to me, however I have seen exactly the same thing happen to single mothers. They sacrifice so much, so often and for so long it really does take its toll. Thank you Loe for these videos, so warm, so needed. Cheers from Aus.

If you get things done quickly - you're now the person who gets things done quickly, so all the stuff that needs to be done fast gets piled on your plate.
