The crazy thing is this came out right before Covid hit. Tool channels the universe.

This is about innoculating ones self from fear. Not fearing science, and being open to 'embrace whatever may come' which also means, if what comes is negative, grab it and deal with it, embrace the challenge, it will make you stronger. One thing about Maynards lyrics, is they're deeply poetic, like the metal (I know this is blends of genres) but kind of like the metal version of Dylan with the way he uses some of his lyrics. And yes, some fear is healthy, as it tells you to escape danger and not let your guard down. But he's not talking about those types of fear.

I feel like until you listen to this atleast 5 times you can't really appreciate the drums and the bass and how they make every single section of this song. The lyrics are icing on the cake.

My interpretation is fairly literal. In meditation and breathwork, there is a lot of "breathe in the good, breathe out the bad." Most, if not all, of our fears can essentially be winnowed down to a core fear of not being in control. I think this song is a conversation with himself; talking to his own ego/super-ego. It's about breathing out/excorcising/releasing the parts of his mind that allow fear to spring forth and take purchase. He's killing off the fear inside of himself, thereby innoculating himself from it. But, instead of it being a "battle," it's a "release." He's breathing it out, just letting it go. At the end of the day, though, art is subjective. Maynard writes poetry, and how that poetry is interpreted is entirely up to the individual. I mean, for all we know, he could have written this about a really bad fart his dog ripped one night that stank up the entire house. 😂

I'mnot gonna try to jump to what this song means. I hear many angles. It jumps right into Pheuma afterwards. One breath. Accept others poison? Trust yourself? Protect yourself? Understand yourself? I'm not sure what combo of things is happening and where they're going. I'll catch ya later

You gotta take a step back from conspiracy theories man. Be skeptical but be realistic. The song is about freeing yourself from inner demons, the fear of connecting with other people. The idea that the whole world is conspiring against you is one of those demons you need to free yourself from.

I normally like your takes but this one is very tin foil hat, considering this album came out before covid. I have classmates from high school who went into medical research to help people, be it vaccinations, cancer treatment, whatever else. To say that the medical industry is using everybody is to act like these people I know are "in on it". Does a woman I went to college with who became a research pharmacist because of her mom's breast cancer diagnosis want to just make money and scheme against the population by hiding a cure? Wack shit, man.
