Today we’re going to test out the Ryobi 18V 3/8” Cordless Bolt Cutter. This thing seriously looks like a Transformer’s ripped off appendage!
The Tool
Of course the first thing that I wanted to do when I saw a warning label not to stick your fingers between the blades, was to stick my finger between the blades. But I didn’t because I’m a grown-up now. I have not gotten to use a lot of Ryobi’s tools, as they generally do not perform well in professional environments. So I’m glad I got to test something out that I could possibly use in the field. Electricians use bolt cutters a lot, but generally they’re for smaller machine screws and we need the threads to be usable once we cut them. But sometimes you forget the combination to the lock on all your ladders or materials and you need to get into them so having a bolt cutter that you don’t have to squeeze could be an awesome thing.
Upon opening the package the tool itself feels extremely durable. It does not feel like it’s under-built. In fact it feels well engineered and ergonomically efficient. I went out and bought a few different bolts to try to cut (you can see how the tool performs in the video above). The first bold I tried cutting was a 1/4“ x 20 threads per inch bolt. It had absolutely no problem cutting through this bolt however the teeth have a 1/16” gap between them. When the job is close to done, so the jaws did not completely cut through the bolt. When I pulled the bolt out the threads were mangled and I had to bend and break the bolts tip off that I had just cut. This is a little disappointing as it seems like a very messy way to cut the bolt so I tried again several times with the same results. CONTINUE READING AT www.electricianu.com/tool-rev...

You need to read the manual, the tool is working properly and cutting properly. This is great for cutting off locks, chains, wire shelving and things like that, it should be obvious that it is not for cutting bolts to size. Also, you need to read the manual for how to adjust the gap in the jaws. The tool does a great job for its intended purpose and is sold at a bargain price. Your review did a disservice to the tool.

Hi, You need to update your video. I have one of these tools too. The jaws are adjustable! It shows how to do it in the owner's manual. Requires a 13mm wrench. You need to adjust both jaw bolts so the blades meet evenly....

I'm so glad that somebody blasting these so-called-Pro people down below in comments. I think these "Pros" are jealous of Ryobi Tools because Ryobi is making tools cheaper for DIYers. My personal experience with Ryobi Tools is that they are just as good as Makita's and Dewalt's , but at a fraction of a price . I have had all three brands' tools in the past. Quality of Ryobi's is just as good as the other two brands I mentioned here.

He said he would stick it in any hole!!!! I wasn’t sure if he was still taking about the bolt thread... either way, great review, just ordered mine today..

If you’re worried about reusing a bolt that you need to cut, you need a shorter bolt. Otherwise, get a bench grinder and/or a die to dress the threads to make the usable.

Reviewer forgot to test stainless steel bolts. I was waiting to use the Ryobi tool on a stainless 5/16" x 18TPI bolt but needed to get the bolt cut and rethreaded asap, so I just used a Lennox hacksaw blade. Backing out a nut straightened the thread. I have no doubt the Ryobi P592 could have also done the job, with a few drops of cutting oil applied to the bolt after the blades locked onto it.

This video would have been more useful if you had also shown the cutting of thick gage wire, pad locks and higher grade bolts.

Agreed. My manager bought one of these for the shop and we ONLY use it for small locks.

It is a "bolt cutter" not a fine finishing tool. If you want a fine cut I'm sure there's an app for that.

Hey Dustin love your vids. Although I would never buy a green tool. It works fine as far as I can tell, the trick...put the bolt on first, cut to length then spin the bolt off and it will retread itself on the way out. You may need a vice or something to hold the head then spin the bolt off with a wrench. I always do this, I usually just use an angle grinder, same principle. Keep up the great work man. Go Check out AVE's tool reviews. Greatest channel in my humble opinion.

Man I wish you would have showed wires being cut. That's what I would use it for if anything.

I use a ratchet cutter or a swazall for that. I wouldn’t buy this because at 3/8” size you’re only gonna be able to cut 1/0 or 2/0 with it max. Jaws are too small for anything bigger so you’d need to buy another tool.

Its a $114 tool, if you want an expensive tool, go spend $1,500 on a Greenlee bolt cutter.

Yeah using something that's called a bolt cutter and expecting said bolts to be useable afterwards seems odd... this thing is for cutting padlocks and chains and small bar stock users manual also states soft materials up to 3/8s but hard materials at 1/4 inch.. again if you want useable threads on a long bolt use a sawzall

Psa I bought one of these magical tools as a truck driver a gate card handed me one to cut a redbull bolt seal and as a guy who had a pair of 2ft bolt cutters it was damn near a religious experience.

This review is accurate for every ryobi tool. I spent years repairing power tools. Ryobi is absolute shit. Under engineered with poor quality materials and bad heat mitigation in the controls and in the internal battery controls.

A agree, a pair of Klein’s for 1/4” or a sawzall for anything bigger will work and we all have that on us everyday already.

WTF is your problem? That tool is working as intended. If I were Ryobi I’d quit sending you tools to review, based on a couple of items, e.g. your foul mouth and not really understanding the intent of the tools you’re reviewing. There’s really no excuse for saying fk at least 20 times in the span of a 5 minute video. I watch other channels, such as VCG that don’t utter one swear word, yet have a great show. You need to clean it up!
