The 'reverse entropy' effect is very real with Tool. I've been experiencing it for about 25 years now. Not only has the band and albums improved along the way, but my enjoyment of each song only improves with each listen.

Those are always the best bands. Tool is sort of in a league of its own, but other bands that I initially felt blase about then fell in love with after were Mr. Bungle, The Melvins, and Ween.

Come on Vin, I thought you said you were into mythology! I can't believe you didn't pick up on this! Alright let me take you to school haha TLDR: Saturn = Chronus, father of Zeus Saturn is Chronus' name in the Roman pantheon From the moment the titan Chronus kills his father Uranus, he knows that his own children are destined to kill him as well. The grudge is the malice that Chronus holds for his fate as well as his children. In order to attempt to overcome his fate, Chronus ate all his children as soon as they were born, except Zeus, who was swapped for a STONE that Chronus then swallowed instead. Wear the grudge like a crown of negativity. Calculate what we will or will not tolerate. Desperate to control all and everything. Unable to forgive your scarlet letterman. Chronus, King of the Titans, deciding to take his fate into his own hands. The scarlet letterman are his own children, every time he sees them he is reminded of his fate. Clutch it like a cornerstone. Otherwise it all comes down. Justify denials and grip 'em to the lonesome end. Clutch it like a cornerstone. Otherwise it all comes down. Terrified of being wrong. Ultimatum prison cell. Chronus trying to hold onto his remaining time, denying his fate, hanging on to his place until his lonesome end in Tartarus (hell). Saturn ascends, choose one or ten. Hang on or be humbled again. Humbled again. One or ten = himself or his children, all or nothing Hang on to his crown or be humbled by watching his children succeed him. Clutch it like a cornerstone. Otherwise it all comes down. Justify denials and grip 'em to the lonesome end. Saturn ascends, comes round again. Saturn ascends, the one, the ten. Ignorant to the damage done. Chronus ascends by killing his father. He "comes round again" in the form of his son Zeus, who kills Chronus like Chronus did his father. Chronus is ignorant to the damage done when he chooses to devour his children because this act ends up sealing his fate by forcing Zeus to kill him to free his siblings from his stomach (Chronus death = damage done) Saturn comes back around to show you everything Let's you choose what you will, will not see and then Drags you down like a stone or lifts you up again Spits you out like a child, light and innocent. Long story, but Zeus ends up making Chronus vomit up his siblings i.e. Poseidon, Hades, etc, who are still alive in Chronus' stomach. Saturn comes back around. Lifts you up like a child Or drags you down like a stone to Consume you till you choose to let this go. Choose to let this go. Give away the stone. Let the oceans take and Transmutate this cold and fated anchor. Give away the stone. Let the waters kiss and Transmutate these leaden grudges into gold. Let go. Give away the stone = give up attempting to control fate and embrace it instead Oceans = chaos/nature/fate Chronus is commonly symbolized by lead, Zeus is commonly symbolized with gold. (I also believe that the alchemists were strongly influenced by mythology, but spoke in symbolic language to disguise their beliefs out of fear of prosecution for heresy by the Church) This is just my interpretation, but I think it's pretty compelling. The song (as well as the myth itself of course) is highly allegorical and speaks of the cycles both between generations as well as within ourselves and how to possibly overcome them, if that's even possible.

This is a very interesting interpretation. Interpreting music is honestly one of the most amazing things because a song can mean something different to everyone who listens to it. Saturn (Roman god) is identified with Cronus (Greek god) but does not 100% equal Cronus. He still eats his kids, but where the Greeks feared him or saw him as a stepping stone in a story, the Romans revered him. In Roman mythology, Saturn is actually associated with both peace and plenty. The Romans adapted the Greek pantheon to suit their needs. Also, Chronus is the god of time, who later became associated with both Saturn and Cronus. I personally agree with Vin's interpretation. However, I also believe that Maynard is referencing Saturn in astrology because Saturn equals misery.

the excitement I see in you two when you guys are learning more and more about tool, reminds me of when I first became obsessed with Pink Floyd. I've listened to the wall over 1000 times now. I wrote 1000+ word essays in high school dissecting the lyrics of the album, I even learned to play the entire album (minus some harder solos), and played a 15m medley as my final exam in guitar class. I think this is why I love your channel so much, because I did the same level of lyrical analysis of the wall.

I always took "hang on or be humbled again" as the justification of a person holding a grudge, or the fear/cost that they are unwilling to make. To let go of a grudge often means to admit your own faults, and thus be humbled. A stubborn person holding a hates the idea of being humbled. "I MUST hang on to this grudge! I've spent so much time and energy on it! If I let go now, it will be humiliating, And yet, this is exactly what we need to do in these situations. Let go. Admit the fault, have humility, and move on.

I totally didn't think about it until watching this - but the whole thing of "leaden grudges" fits in with the Saturn imagery as well. You know the little astrological symbols for the different planets? The symbol for Saturn was used in alchemy to represent lead. And of course one of the goals of alchemy was to transmute lead into gold.

The "Holy Gift" is bs. People look too far into the things that aren't important and ignore the things that are. Also, Thelema is Alestair Crowley's school of thought, and Danny Cary is related to him, I think. Another fun fact is that TOOL is Adam Jones' band and Lateralus (the song and riff) came from Justin Chancellor, their bassist.

A constant theme running through this album is how letting go leads you to some sort of enlightenment and freedom. Here specifically, let the grudge go and be in control of your own personal journey. About the interludes, IMO you should just put them together with the songs that follow. When you hear the album often enough, they kinda start belonging together anyway, i.e. eon blue apocalypse + the patient, mantra + schism, parabol + parabola and disposition + reflection + triad are all package deals to me.

Also the choice of specifying lead to gold is a reference to the holy grail of Alchemy, the philosophers stone, which would turn lead into gold. This heavy stone of a grudge becomes a philosophers stone of sorts to yourself the moment you can let it go. Possessing this grudge is poisonous like lead but being able to let it go is golden. Golden for your personal growth and maturity.

I always thought the phrase "Hang on or be humbled again" was in reference to the grudge. Letting go of a grudge can be a humbling experience where, at the end, you have to acknowledge that you've made a mistake to still be angry. I figured that line was the logic behind being angry- that you can't calm down or you'll realize you shouldn't have been mad in the first place. In any case, another great song, and another great review!

Vin and Sori, another great reaction! 🤟😎... Vin, if you’re working on an album you certainly understand the creative process, and the delicate balance between “message and method”, and I feel that’s what Maynard was referring to with the song “lateralus” as unintentionally ‘gimmicky’ or’ sophomoric ’ in hindsight ... so much has been made about the ‘method’ as the focal point, that I can see how Maynard could feel it’s overshadowed the song as a complete experience.

Yall did a great job of doing research and understanding the song Lateralus. The last step of understanding to take is to see the message within the over-arching story of the lyrics of Lateralus. The spiral is what he says to represent the fibonacci sequence and the fibonacci sequence is a numerical representation of nature. So when he says to "swing on the spiral of our divinity and still be a human," he is saying to push ourselves to the edge of our nature so we "may just go where no one's been." You can see the underlying point expressed throughout all of the lyrics in the song, it is beautiful.

One detail about the grudge I found a while back is that when he says “Saturn acends” it refers to the middle finger in hand astrology. Maynard later talks about the meaning of Saturn being the symbol for “almighty god”

You guys should have the lyrics up for these. I have two monitors so I can follow along no problem, but it'd be nice to have all of it in the video itself. :) I'm excited for this series. Lowkey hope you guys tackle Aenima at some point. That's a great album too, lots of Jungian philosophy on there. Edit: Also it might be interesting to check out all the info on genius.com for each song. The site has interpretations and information, and generally official info from any given artist is given precedence with anything too outlandish or not confirmed is downvoted to oblivion. Each snippet of lyrics can also be clicked on for info on those specific segments. Edit 2: If this is _maybe_ your favorite on the album, VIn, you'd probably like Aenima. I'd say musically this is the closest sounding to something from that record.

Rod Jubair It’s actually a bastardization of the album as it’s revisionist.

It has been like watching the evolution of an experience. Vin is spiraling out into fandom and sori is arriving at relationships with lyrics. Intimacy with this art continues......
