@Alex Mercer I know this is an old comment but just for curiosity sake: Maynard used to dress up in all kinds of different weird ways back in the 90's. One of the most used was to dress up with fake boobs in a bra, skirt and heels. Presumably, he did this as a reference to their song 'Hooker With A Penis'. Edit: Forgot to mention that this video appears to be backstage before or after a show, hence the reason he still has the tits and shoes.

I like how he was always waay ahead of his time and didn't mind having "feminine characteristics" (the interviewer made it sound like a bad thing) because guess what?? we all have "feminine and masculine characteristics" (yin and yang energy). We should all embrace it and find balance as he said. Few people have this level of consciousness. I love this man.
@texastom05305 жыл бұрын
I feel like tool in general are ahead of the curve. Their sound is so unique. But it does have to be said that Maynard is the perfect voice for such amazing sounds. His lyrics provoke thought while thematically being somewhat broad statements about...well, just human existence. We divide ourselves by gender, race, etc but we're all only human. Their music has always been a literal tool. Made so that anyone can use it as they see fit. I can't wait to hear what they have to say to us on the new album.
@taylorhaller44354 жыл бұрын
Thank you! Everything he said in this interview made perfect sense to me. People who say he is being sarcastic are blind to what he is saying. They can’t understand his level of consciousness; because of that, they assume he is being sarcastic. He’s literally saying he is a male and grew up as a male, so he can only imagine what it is like to be a female. Whether your a male or female, we all have emotional characteristics; we all share the same characteristics and emotions, because guess what?? We are all human beings. People also don’t understand that he dresses up a lot during his shows. He might’ve been about to play a show or just finished a show, and that’s why he’s wearing a bra and heals. Think about David Bowie.. he was a male but wore makeup and female clothing. He went on to say that we all have these emotions and they need to be released, and he went on to say that in some cases we are irrational; he said it’s an important movement. The interviewer responded by saying, “Are you saying that being irrational is a feminine quality?” And he said “it’s an emotional quality”. Right there.. he’s correcting her assumption on whether or not he said that being irrational is a feminine quality. The interviewer herself cannot understand what he is saying. So, he has to correct her by basically saying, “no, it’s an emotional quality that ALL humans have, and it’s important to release that in yourself, because we are all human beings.” All he is saying is that he can never have empathy for females because he will never be a female. He can feel bad for the fact that women have periods every month, but he will never be able to know what it is actually like to have a period every month. He will never know completely what it is like to have a feminine point of view. It’s the same concept with several things. For example, I can feel sympathy for my cat, because he has to eat the same boring food everyday. But I will never know what it is like to actually be a cat and have to eat the same boring food everyday.

This is a message to Maynard. Please reply if you remember this day. There was a concert in Seattle where Tool played with the Rollins Band. Early 90's. Tool still had a van with the Tool logo drawn on it ( painted?). I waited after the concert, outside by the sidewalk. I was hoping for an autograph. I noticed a man beating up a girl nearby and all the people were just standing around...afraid. I tackled the guy, did not strike him, only subdued the attacker. I was a Military Policeman. I could not stand by and let a person get beat up..let alone a small girl. Others then came to aid the girl and some pushed the guy away and told him to shove off. This is when You, Maynard, walked up to me and shook my hand and said "Good job". My friends were amazed saying " Scott, that was Maynard!" I had no idea it was you, but i will take a handshake over an autograph ANY DAY! MAYNARD, DO YOU REMEMBER THIS DAY? IF SO, WILL YOU REPLY? Long time fan, from back in the day...old school skater/punk/thrasher/head. Love to hear from you.

No. Kurt Cobain named his daughter after another Frances Bean. That Frances Bean was put in an asylum for being a feminist and supposed communist. I suggest you look her up. She was an amazing woman. I'm not surprised that both Maynard and Kurt supported her.
@questionablekortex31913 жыл бұрын
@@alexandraw.4012 are you sure? I can't find anything about that. The only other Frances I know of that era was Frances, the guitarist from the Vaselines, which Cobain named his daughter after. But if you're talking about Frances Farmer, the actress, who was institutionalized, it wouldn't make sense. She was an inspiration to Cobain, him having written a song with her name in it (I.E Frances Farmer will have her revenge on Seattle), then there's a hole in there. Why would they want her "freed" if she was already dead? She died in the 70's when Maynard and Cobain were just children. Please inform me if in wrong about this, if there is infact another Frances Bean I don't know anything about, just here to have a discussion is all!

IMO what Maynard said regarding himself being much more sympathetic - opposed to empathetic - towards a feminine point of view was a very accurate and plausible statement. As a man myself I can say that I feel the same way. The reason being is because although I can sympathize, show compassion, and attempt to gain a better understanding of various feminine beliefs and perspectives, until I have actually "walked in the shoes of a woman" per say, I cannot possibly possess the ability to empathize, or actually SHARE those same feelings of another woman. I've always wondered how my general outlook on life would change if I could...

@adan23748 жыл бұрын
SwanDuck Yeah I'd say that would be a pretty accurate representation, at least if you're a male who has an athletic build and is somewhat attractive. Even then though I'm not sure it would be the same. This is especially the case when it comes to a woman who is an 8/10 or above on the "hotness scale" (lol yea I know it sounds dumb, but you get my point.) Although women who fall in that category of being extremely beautiful are often pampered by men and given much more positive attention - which is the case for people who are attractive in general - so idk if I would ask someone like that to find out whatit's really like to be a woman as opposed to being a man. Either way I'm sure that as a man I will never possess the ability to fully understand how women have to face certain obstacles in life that simply do not exist for men....
@frostboomba14628 жыл бұрын
+Adam L it's the same for men. a woman can't possibly understand what it means to be a man, they can't understand what it means to be the disposable sex, "the evil sex", the so called potential rapists, I'm tired of being sympathetic towards women, if they hate their bodies so much, well tough luck, I don't give a shit, we men have done everything we can to legally protect women, even the ugliest woman is given more consideration than above average guys. women can stick their so called problems up their ass. the only place where i truly see women suffering are in war torn areas and places like Africa, and it isn't only the women, the men suffer too.

I have only ever men one compassionate and empathetic female in my life. You only have to look at the art that is produced my men and women to see who really has compassion and empathy. Men make art about the external, they make art about war, family, god and love. Women make art about themselves and their vagina primarily, there is no exploration further than the self. Women can trick you into believing they are compassionate as long as that compassion has some personal gain for them, but it's mostly chemicals in the mans brain making him believe the fairy tale that a women can love as a man loves. Men on the other hand show love through sacrifice and get internal validation from the act as a biological driver. It's time we told the truth so we can maybe survive the demographic winter we find ourselves in.

I respect this man so much because he keeps moving forward and deals with his feelings even though he cant explain or understand some of the feelings he has endured. His music has like a spiritual message of trials and tribulations and trying to find out what is right for him and I am sure that with his life style as a performer and traveling and being famous he must have to adapt and become different personalities many times and then when he has a chance to rest he has to once again sift through all those personalities and try and figure out if its possible to choose one and stick with it? But this man really puts everything he has into performing and he's probably wondering why he's lasted so long, and when is like his voice going to get weaker, or something else to make him different and no longer as he has been? I hope he finds something else to take the place of his talents before something causes him to not be able to do what he does on stage because him and the Guitar man are like "ONE" great performer and band. But of course we all grow older, and besides that we all face nut cases and jealous people that would purposely cause us hardship for whatever reason they are using to try and cause us to change from what makes us different and talented? I am a house painter since I was 26 but I am 52 and I am older but I am still good but my body is saying "Hey, you have done no work for years and I'm out of shape?" Meanwhile my mind is not listening to my body until I start painting and my body starts aching? So shit happens to our bodies over time? But I saw videos of Maynard in his younger days where he was having fun, unsure of himself, behaving not serious but wanting to, and then I compare and see how serious he turned, possessed by every word he sings, trying to be perfect and does perform perfect in my opinion? And his perseverance to me is Green Beret material to me? I mean he's a fighter, and seems to be a genuinely good person to others who treat him good. So I think your GREAT Maynard and your other half who plays Guitar with his long hair covering up his face giving you all the attention because he loves you like a true brotherly love and your happiness is his so he lays low and makes sure you get the attention, for he could be like Angus Young their on AC-DC. who is a great performer but I know Maynard respects the Guitar guy there deeply subconsciously for not trying to get the audience to also "look over at him?" He is definitely a true friend to Maynard. You guys will always be great to me so I guess use can retire knowing this, haha. Peace people.

It’s a little tangential but I’m pretty sure he just responds by saying he tries his best to understand but can’t fully because he himself isn’t female, and then he kind of just starts talking about the importance of confronting other points of view and subject matter that is either hard to understand or hard to deal with in order to grow as a person. And like, the fact that he needs that balanced perspective (working towards having feminine energy to balance out the masculine) in order to fully communicate the emotion through the lyrics.
