Here's a case study on how to wind and fly large rubber models; also how I like to set up my propeller front ends. Like the "Altimeter"? Get plans and a short kit here: www.jimoreillymodelplans.com/O...

It's great to work on old planes like this. Really interesting, thanks for this. Caleb does a good job of getting in on the act here. 👍

I enjoy your videos and learn quite a bit, I haven't done freeflight since I was a kid and am gettin back to them since I retired I noticed you were using a Crockett hook I have a couple but have never used them , how about a video showing the proper use and installation of them. I can't find anything on the internet on them... thanks and keep up the good work.

Larry Benson, whelp, I reckon I'll have to do that. :) Glad the videos have helped!

Love how the prop folds up after the rubber motor is exhausted! Thanks for showing that up close! 👍😀 Is the technology the same on newer models these days?

It's even more complex now. Typically there's a locking mechanism on the prop to keep the blades extended and feathered at launch and the tensioner is a plunger on the prop hub which is activated by torque rather than tension so that the prop locks instantly instead of bumping a few times before fully catching. Also, modern rubber models often feature variable incidence tails activated by timers.

Hi Josh, thanks for all of the fantastic videos:) I want to get into free flight, and I am looking at buying a kit like the phantom flash laser cut kit from volaré products. My question is: is this the best plane for me to buy in order to learn how to build this type of thing? Also, where can I buy a rubber band winder?

Phantom Flash is an excellent little model. I highly recommend it. Volare sells affordable winders, rubber, and silicone grease for lubricating the rubber motors.

I notice you dont use winding tubes. Is it worth using or do you think it's overkill. Thank you

Honestly, you should probably use them. I didn't have any mentoring when I got started in the hobby and as such I developed a ton of bad habits. Not using a blast tube is one of them.

@@joshuawfinn Got it. For developing some bad habits, you have awesome knowledge and are great at passing it on! Thank you
