You can be buried at Arlington if you die while on federal active duty other than training. As far as I know, the federal distinction mainly applies to the National Guard. If you've retired from active duty and are receiving retirement pay. Former POWs who received an honorable discharge from their last term of service and died on or after November 30, 1993. In addition to Medal of Honor recipients, if you've been awarded the Distinguished Service Cross (Air Force or Navy), Distinguished Service Medal, Silver Star or Purple Heart.

@@jamescurfman3284 Happy to help. Arlington does have the most restrictive burial eligibility of the national cemeteries and the eligibility rules have been changed 14 times in the last 150 years. They are proposing new rules to eliminate eligibility for those who die on active duty, but not in combat, and the retirees. As of now I haven't heard of these changes taking place though. I as veteran of the U.S. Army for 23 years and of 4 combat tours and being 100% disabled as a result of those conflicts I am as patrioric as it gets.....this song is a testament to brave men and women of the past, those that currently serve and those that will serve in the future....a testament to their loyalty, duty, respect, selfless-service, honor, integrity and personal courage......my wish is that when I pass that I be laid to rest with those that, "have laid so costly a sacrifice upon the altar of Freedom." ( Mrs. Bixby letter - Abraham Lincoln) in Arlington National Cemetery in Washington D.C. I know of more than few of my family and some of those I served with and for that are interred in that hallowed ground and it is my hope that I to can lay in gloried honor beside them......

I will tell you now, when you go to Arlington, you can't help but cry your eyes out! Thousands upon thousands of young men and young women who served our country that their bodies are laid there but there souls are flying high in Heaven! I hope you can someday make to Arlington and take a copy of Arlington (the song) with you, and as you walk some rows, listen to that song and look at the names! Those are OUR proud people, no matter their color, sex, or race. They loved our country to pay the ultimate sacrifice! May we never forget them!

There is a video on KZfaq that is complimentary to this song. Clinton Anderson a horse trainer has a video out where he visited the Old Guard. They are the soldiers who you see in the background of this video carrying the casket into Arlington for the burial on the traditional caisson. It's a wonderful video that will bring a tear to your eye.

A few years ago I went to the funeral of my friend Mike Romano at Arlington National Cemetery. We had become close when we were delivering food to homeless people in Fairfax, Virginia. Mike was a friendly, funny guy who never made a big deal about the fact that he had retired from the U.S. Army as a lieutenant colonel. After that he worked until he was 70 as a contractor in information security. Soon after he completed building his dream home in North Carolina, Mike contracted a severe form of cancer that took him in only a few months. It was raining softly when I left work in Crystal City, Virginia to attend his funeral. He had been fast-tracked into burial there, though I don't know why. I wore my black suit under my trench coat and carried an umbrella. A group of about 50 of us gathered around the gravesite. All around us were the simple white marble tombstones that had the names of soldiers, airmen, and sailors who had fought in World War I, World War II, the Korean War, Vietnam, and the Gulf War. Mike had served during Vietnam. After a short while, a caisson drawn by four horses came to a halt and six soldiers slowly lifted a beautiful oak casket from the rig and solemnly carried it to the gravesite. A priest from our church led us in prayer, then soldiers armed with rifles stepped forward, snapped to attention, and on command, raised their weapons and fired three volleys --- the 21-gun salute. Shortly afterward, the funeral dispersed. Before I left, I stepped up to his casket, touched the wood, and bade my friend Mike goodbye and thank you.

There is an older movie that shows the Army unit that provides the Tomb Guards for the Unknown Soldiers. It gives you a slight look at the cemetery and the way parts functions. The movie is called " Gardens Of Stone " starring James Caan, James Earl Jones as two of the main characters. I saw an interview with Trac and he said that the Marines picture that was on the back ground was given to him by the Marine's dad to use in the video. Semper Fidelis
