I think this film is misleading. The atomic bomb did not end WW II. When it was dropped in August, 1945, Germany had already surrendered. Also, at that time, the Japanese situation was absolutely hopeless, for the following reasons: -- That Japan had lost surrounding islands, including Okinawa -- That Japan had lost most of its navy and airforce -- That Japan had lost hundreds of thousands of troops -- That much of Japan's industrial capability had been destroyed -- That many large cities had been destroyed -- That the war in Europe was already over, freeing up Allied resouces for Asia -- That Russia had just declared war on Japan on August 7, 1945 -- That Russia had 20 million soldiers, and was sending them East by the thousands Even at the start of the war, the US had the capacity to produce 10x as much steel as Japan. By August, 1945 it must have been over 100x, with similar stats for oil. Given how hopeless the situation was, it was likely Japan would have surrendered in short order even without the bomb or an invastion. So, any attempt to justify the "frying" of Japanese civilians and school children with the most horrific weapon of mass destruction ever invented is indefensible. And, I do not believe that Oppenheimer advocated this. Please refer to the 1981 documentary, "The Day After Trinity," which includes an actual interview with Robert's brother Frank (founder of the SF Exploratorium). So, I do not know why they had to make this film, and I certainly do not agree that Mr. Oceans 21 and Mary Poppins deserve Academy Awards.
