I’d say Kevin Garnett in Uncut Gems is the most shocking athlete performance since he’s playing himself as a full on dramatic role. Not self-aware or comedic like traditional celebrity movie cameos tend to be.

Carl Weathers was an excellent choice for the top spot as Apollo Creed. "Stay in school and use your brain. Be a doctor, be a lawyer, carry a leather briefcase. Forget about sports as a profession. Sports make ya grunt and smell. See, be a thinker, not a stinker."

Carl Weathers definitely earned his mark as Number 1 here. After working with both Stallone and Schwarzenegger (where his characters in both of their films sadly died), Weathers himself is sometimes overlooked. Glad he got a shout-out to his San Diego State roots during his college days too.

I honestly lost most of the respect I had for this list when Lebron was given Number 2. Any athlete who portrays themselves has a much easier road to walk than the athlete who should have been Number 1, Ray Allen. Ray Allen had to portray a High School prodigy with severe parental trauma and pressure and he does so like he had be acting for years. The way he internalizes and tries to keep his pain choked deep down is beautifully understated. It was a way tougher role to portray than Lebron and Garnett who were both portraying themselves and it was a dramatic role that required nuance and depth unlike Bautista's Drax or Arnold's Terminator.

I kinda of agree with Ray Allen supposed to ve higher, but as someone who took on acting, it's just as tough to portray yourself. Especially along great actors too. We always subconsciously put on an act when we portray ourselves towards other people therefore when we act as ourselves in movies we tend to be conscious and suddenly question ourselves.

Does mickey rourke count? He had a pro boxing career, even if quite short, and got nominated for an oscar for his amazing performance in the wrestler. Even though, he is probably seen as predominantly an actor rather than an ex athlete.

I think that Gary Stephens deserves at least an honorable mention for his turn in Seabiscuit. Maybe not truly proficient as an actor but he did breath a lot of life and authenticity into his role and the movie as a whole.

I didn't watch Trainwreck but LeBron was a natural as an actor in that movie. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar was also in an episode of Diff'rent Strokes as a substitute teacher named Mr. Wilkes. He was another natural as an actor. He was also in one of those Ernest P Worrell movies called Slam Dunk Ernest.

@@gpolenik I seem to remember some discussion between him and James Cameron - (DVD extras or something) and he was originally going to be cast as as Kyle Reese. Being the protector and all, as he usually is the hero. He wasn't usually one to play the actual bad guy. Which is why in T2, he comes back as Terminator but reprogrammed as John Connor's protector.

One out of left field: former rugby league player Matthew Johns in "The Final Winter". Ok, Matty's role as the Newtown coach wasn't a huge stretch, but apparently he did a lot of preparation and was good in arguably the best rugby league movie ever. Of course, Matty was already known for his iconic character Reg Reagan on "The Footy Show", so his shift to movies wasn't a big surprise.

What about the Juice? His murderous tendencies aside you cannot deny his acting chops in Naked Gun series.

To think, we almost got O.J. as the Terminator, but, James Cameron thought Juice was to nice and likable.

It was more of a cameo, but I really liked Boban Marjanovic in John Wick 3. Although he just had comedic lines and actions, him as an assassin is kind of scary too.
